Nightmaker: Slot Overview
Most people instinctively settle on a comfort zone somewhere along horror’s wide scale, from harmless, chuckle-worthy fluff to full-on, sleep-ruining dread, steering clear of anything that crosses their personal line. Slots work in a similar way: they’re almost never genuinely frightening, though some do lean into darker themes now and then. A developer not especially known for eerie subject matter is Swedish software provider ELK Studios, yet for whatever reason the team has wrapped itself in heavy, ominous robes for the online slot Nightmaker.
As the game boots up, players are met by something like an Iron Throne stripped of its blades, before being dropped into a decidedly unsettling setting. If the phrase “ELK Studios” makes you think of pirate birds or snorting cartoon bulls, a mental recalibration may be needed, because Nightmaker is genuinely bleak. The reels sit inside a strange tunnel of ribbed shapes, like something H. R. Giger might have drafted for an Alien film, and it’s packed with devilish nods. The soundtrack matches the mood—eerie and even mournful—like the fight was lost before it began and the scavengers are already circling.

Nightmaker’s playfield is pretty distinctive as well. It uses 5 columns of symbols, which land by default in a 3-5-5-5-3 configuration with a feature row positioned above. This setup delivers 1,125 ways to win, increasing to 3,125 once the four corner spots are opened, and climbing further when symbols split—up to 25,000. The game’s huge upside is powered by a highly volatile math model and ELK Studios’ familiar RTP of 94%. If that suits you, stakes can be set from 20 c to $/€100 per base game spin.
Four cryptic markings serve as Nightmaker’s low pays, returning 0.4x the bet for 5 OAK, while the high pays are three strange items plus a skull face symbol, paying 0.8x to 10x the bet for 5-of-a-kind. Wild symbols replace any paying symbol, and a win made up entirely of wilds pays the same as the top-paying symbol. Wilds remain indestructible until they reach the bottom of the grid, after which they move with the next win, including any wilds stacked above them. Winning symbols are removed from the grid once they’ve paid. Gravity then drops symbols down to close the gaps, and any used feature symbols respin. This cycle continues for as long as fresh wins keep landing.
Nightmaker: Slot Features

Nightmaker’s feature set includes cascades, big symbols, a feature row, a bonus game, a super bonus game, Beast Spins, and X-iter bonus buys.
Big Symbols
Any pay symbol may land as a big 3×5 symbol on the middle three reels. Big symbols split into 15 1×1 symbols, and features apply to their respective columns. The rattle feature can trigger on any initial base game spin, awarding 1 to 3 big symbols.
Feature Row
Feature row effects trigger instantly and influence symbols in the relevant column.
- Wild Spirit – effects 1-3 symbol positions, which can result in 1-6 wild symbols on the top positions of the affected columns. If there are already wilds or scatters in top positions, wilds are added to the next available positions from the top and spawned wilds get the multiplier of the symbol they replace. Wild Spirit keeps wild symbols indestructible for 1 additional win.
- Symbol Multiplier – adds a multiplier value to all symbols of the indicated type in the affected column. Wild symbol multipliers do not affect the jumping wild.
- Wildfire – triggers if there is a wild in the affected column, replacing all symbols on the column except scatters with wilds. The highest wild multiplier on the column will be added to all wild symbols on the column. A symbol with a higher multiplier will give that specific wild the higher multiplier value. Wildfire keeps wild symbols indestructible for 1 additional win.
- Split Symbols – splits all symbols except scatters on the affected column. Symbols can only be split once, and the maximum number of symbols on a column is 10.
Bonus Game
Hitting 3 scatters in the base game awards 8 free spins. In the bonus game, one pay symbol is selected to receive a persistent multiplier. The four corners of the grid unlock for the round, increasing the number of ways to win. Landing a scatter in one of the corners awards +2 free spins, and the corner turns into a blocker.
Super Bonus Game
When one of the 3 triggering scatters is a super scatter, the super bonus is triggered instead. Here, the super bonus symbol becomes a jumping wild that shifts to a new spot after each win and between free spins. The jumping wild temporarily takes on the current multiplier of the position it occupies. Landing a super bonus symbol in one of the corners in the bonus game or super bonus game creates an extra jumping wild.
Beast Spins
Beast Spins start when scatters land in all four corners during the bonus game. While Beast Spins are active, only big symbols spin on the middle three reels.
X-iter
The X-iter lets players purchase entry into various game modes. Bonus Hunt costs 3x the bet and buys a round with more than triple the chance of triggering the bonus game. Wild Spins at 10x the bet buy a round that lands at least 1 wild symbol, and a round with guaranteed Beast Spins costs 100x. The bonus can be bought for 100x or the super bonus for 500x.

Nightmaker: Slot Verdict
Plenty of studios have delivered grim, weighty slots—Print Studios’ Darkness, Red Tiger’s Judgement Day Megaways, Bullshark Games’ Empress of the Shadows, plus a long list of releases from Hacksaw Gaming. With Nightmaker, ELK Studios has stepped into darker territory, and it’s done a solid job if you enjoy games that feel bleak, oppressive, and dangerous. That’s true beyond the theme as well: the highly volatile math model isn’t exactly designed to be anyone’s friendly companion, and even with a lot of moving parts, sessions can still swing in just about any direction.
That unpredictability can be a strength, because Nightmaker plays like it’s been cranked tight—like it could snap and explode at any moment. Any slot can do that, sure, but the specific mix here—splitting symbols and multipliers paired with a large number of ways to win—creates a tense, combustible vibe. Adding to it is the monstrous win potential lurking in the dark: 50,000x the bet. There are no max coins in this game either, so if, and it’s a big if, the max win ever lands, it’ll likely come from pure reel-based trickery rather than a jackpot-style symbol simply dropping in. Beast Spins seem like they’ll matter a lot, given how they can connect so much of the grid, somewhat like Dreadworks‘ Big Jack.
The result is genuinely engaging, and ELK Studios’ venture into a more somber-than-usual theme has worked out well. Not to be that person, but it also helps that parts of the design feel reminiscent of some Nolimit City releases—the splits, symbol multipliers, jumping wilds, the darkness, and so on. NLC doesn’t own those ideas, of course, but the way Nightmaker combines them makes comparisons hard to avoid. By the end, it brought to mind several earlier slots from different studios, though the encouraging point is that most of those memories were of rock-solid games. Nightmaker belongs in that company: a well-crafted, spookily thrilling horror(ish) slot that can deliver jump-scare moments when the big, nasty hitters connect.
