Mystic Staxx: Slot Overview
With NetEnt having bought Red Tiger, it’s easy to assume Mystic Staxx is connected to the Staxx family of slots. In reality, beyond sharing a similar title, it’s nothing alike – the layout and mechanics are entirely its own. Mystic Staxx is a straightforward Asian-themed slot that begins modestly and gradually ramps up, as long as players stay in to build the necessary symbol columns.
Visually, it makes a strong early impression thanks to a fairly refined presentation. The backdrop, in particular, leans into the rich crimson shades common to Asian slots, while a dragon motif sparkles during quieter spells and glows more intensely as the pace picks up. Alongside the dragon, gold accents add a premium vibe, reminiscent of a high rollers lounge or a private nook in a pricey Chinese restaurant. Set against that polished background, the symbols on the 8×6 sized grid fit the theme but come off slightly on the tacky side. Slow, Eastern-leaning music helps balance that out, leaving the overall experience pleasantly put together.
That large grid can feel intimidating, particularly because there are only 40 fixed paylines available for wins. The hit rate also felt on the low side, and since players must grow the symbol stacks over time, it can mean plenty of slow, repetitive spins before the game really opens up. The default RTP is respectable at 95.69%, and the math model is labelled as highly volatile. The upside looks reasonable too, although it’s not immediately clear how it’s meant to be reached.
Available on tablets, smartphones, and desktop devices, Mystic Staxx offers a betting range of 10 p/c to $/€20 per spin. Winning combinations form when three to eight matching symbols land left to right starting from the first reel. There are 11 symbols in total: a wild, a scatter, and 9 regular paying icons. The first 5 pay symbols are coins hanging on strings, while the higher-value set are progressively more elaborate lanterns. An eight-of-a-kind payline of lanterns awards 10 to 20 times the stake. Lines made up of wild symbols also pay, reaching up to 50x the bet for an eight-of-a-kind. Wilds also substitute for any symbol in Mystic Staxx, apart from the Expand symbol.
Mystic Staxx: Slot Features

Even though the title suggests otherwise, Mystic Staxx uses features that are nothing like those in NetEnt’s Staxx releases, so there’s no need to expect respins with roaming stacked symbols. It’s also simpler than many modern slots, as there’s effectively no bonus game. Instead, the main aim is to land special Expand tiles, which gradually increase the height of symbol stacks on each reel.
At the beginning, symbols land across all reels in stacks of 2 high. Randomly, 3×3 sized expand symbols can appear anywhere on the grid. When these tiles are fully visible, all reel symbol stacks increase by +1 symbol. Each time an Expand symbol lands, the same process happens again, raising stacks one symbol at a time until the maximum stack size of 20 is achieved. Note that stacks of the same symbol type are not allowed to land directly on top of one another on the same reel.
Once stacks reach 20 symbols high on each reel, the Expand symbol changes into a 3×3 size wild symbol. Just like the standard wild, this larger wild tile can land anywhere and will substitute for all paying symbols.
Mystic Staxx: Slot Verdict
Mystic Staxx can deliver a certain kind of excitement when tall columns line up and produce a solid payout. That said, it’s a game where you need to invest time before it starts showing its best side. Early on, with stacks only 2 symbols tall, wins can feel limited. Still, it doesn’t take forever to build up around half a dozen levels or so, and that’s where the gameplay begins to feel more engaging. Reaching the full 20-high stacks to activate the oversized wild takes genuine patience. Players who don’t mind waiting, or who can tolerate a very repetitive loop, may appreciate the long-build challenge. Now and then, worthwhile wins do appear, but Mystic Staxx isn’t something you’d describe as consistently lucrative.
When it comes to potential, things become a little confusing. The help section states that wins of up to 4,473 times the stake can be achieved in Mystic Staxx. However, when you actually run through the numbers, it’s difficult to see how that figure is reached. For example, an ideal spin with wild symbols covering every position on the grid pays 2,000x the bet – a strong single-spin result, but still well under half of the advertised maximum. With no bonus game included, that seems like the ceiling.
Players willing to grind through a large number of spins to reach 20-high stacks may not be too bothered by the apparent mismatch in the figures. If the core idea appeals, the rest of the package is decent, but Mystic Staxx can become tiresome if you’re not completely on board with the concept.
