Adding to that tally is Mystic Orbs, a multi-layered slot that can take a few spins before everything clicks, complete with a vivid backstory. Here, a dragon named Ying Longs stands guard at the entrance to Yu the Great’s treasure chamber. Your mission is to use the many tools available to outmanoeuvre the drake and reach the riches beyond.

The game area is pressed into a rock wall, resulting in one of the more subdued-looking ELK releases in recent memory. Oddly, the bonus round doesn’t really brighten things up either. Still, at least it avoids the predictable red, green, and gold “tourist shop” vibe that often sneaks into games with this theme. The soundtrack is far from a disappointment: another energetic ELK mix, blending traditional Asian tones with modern, upbeat twists and plenty of cheeky sampling.

Chasing the treasure is possible on any device, simply by choosing a stake from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin. Press spin and 25 symbols drop into the grid, with a payout awarded when at least 5 matching symbols connect vertically or horizontally. Winning clusters are removed, setting off an Avalanche as the empty spaces are filled by existing symbols. A medium-high volatile trip through Asia, Mystic Orbs comes with a theoretical return of 95%, a familiar ELK benchmark.

Clusters can be made up of three lower-value Asian icons, four animal-style symbols, and a golden wise man figure as the top-paying option. In terms of payouts, clusters can reach 18+ and are worth anywhere from 20x the bet up to 400x the bet for the golden character. Wild symbols can land anywhere and substitute for all symbols except Orbs. If you happen to land a cluster made entirely of wilds, it pays as the highest-value symbol.

Mystic Orbs: Slot Features

The only other symbols that appear in the main grid are the Orbs, which can land in regular form or charged. Orbs act as wild, and if they don’t help form a win, they explode and remove adjacent symbols. The other key mechanic in Mystic Orbs is the 5-position feature row above the reels, which randomly shows feature symbols. When Orbs land on a reel beneath a symbol on the feature row, that feature is awarded. If Orbs land in a charged state, they activate all of the features currently displayed on the feature row. These could be:

• Bonus – grants access to the bonus game.
• Extra life – gives an extra symbol drop when no more winning clusters appear.
• Orb payout – awards a bet multiple. The amount increases if the win multiplier is active.
• Multiplier – adds its value to the total win multiplier.
• Upgrade – upgrades all instances of one symbol type to a higher-value type or wilds for up to 3 Avalanches.
• Orb siege – selects one adjacent symbol to surround the Orb. This can be above, below, and/or to its sides.

Bonus Game

The bonus game is available via purchase or can be triggered by the Bonus symbol on the feature reel or by collecting 5 Orbs in a base game spin. Doing so awards 5 free drops where Orbs continue to be collected. For every 5 Orbs collected during the bonus, additional free spins are awarded. While the bonus is running, the win multiplier is persistent, meaning it doesn’t reset between free spins.

X-iter

You can take on Mystic Orbs in two modes: normal mode or X-iter mode. In X-iter mode, there are five options:

• Feature – 5x the bet for one drop with a guaranteed Orb and at least one activated feature.
• Persistent Multiplier – 25x the bet for 3 drops with a persistent multiplier.
• Charged Orbs – 50x the bet for one drop with all Orbs in a charged state.
• Bonus – 100x the bet for guaranteed entry to the free spins bonus round.
• Super Bonus – 500x the bet for guaranteed entry to free spins where all Orbs are charged.

Mystic Orbs: Slot Verdict

Mystic Orbs is another very playable ELK release, though it may take a little longer than usual for its strengths to shine through—or it might click right away. One reason is that the visuals don’t immediately deliver the eye-candy punch we typically associate with the studio. The calm rock wall setting isn’t the kind of colour burst ELK often goes for. Even so, once you start spinning, there’s a carefully constructed game underneath, and it becomes more rewarding as you learn what each part does and how the mechanics combine.

Mystic Orbs will happily dish out the occasional win, but the real spark appears when Orbs set off features from the feature reel, chaining them together and tying them into the win multiplier. ELK excels at building slots with multiple moving parts that can interlock and create something memorable. As usual, it’s not an everyday occurrence, but it’s genuinely entertaining when it happens. Also as usual, the X-iter is a strong lure if you want to jump straight into the more action-packed options, where you’re more likely to see the consecutive-win, feature-heavy momentum build. The Super Bonus delivered during our Mystic Orbs testing and can be a serious ride. You do pay for having everything fully switched on, though, and the RTP remains the same regardless of which mode you play. What doesn’t change either is the ceiling, topping out at 10,000x the bet.

Whether Asian-themed slots are your thing or not is almost beside the point. Mystic Orb feels like a good match for anyone who enjoys ELK’s style of smart gameplay, where features really come alive once they start weaving together, supported by strong audio-visual presentation. The twist here is that Mystic Orbs looks a little less striking than the studio’s usual standard.
