Montezuma: Overview
For anyone unfamiliar, Montezuma (also spelled Moctezuma in some sources) was the fifth Aztec emperor, ruling from 1440 – 1469. The name may also point to Moctezuma II, the ninth Aztec emperor who reigned from 1502 – 1520. Either way, WMS took the Montezuma name and built an excellent online slot around it. Thankfully, the execution is spot on, giving players access to a slot with striking graphics and animations, paired with a strong, engaging theme.
The Montezuma slot is played on 5 reels and 3 rows. WMS has included 30 paylines, and these are fixed, meaning they can’t be adjusted. That said, you can still change your stake size. Using the relevant selector, you can choose bets from a minimum of 0.01 per line up to 2 per line. As a result, the total wager available ranges from 30 cents and 60€ per spin.
WMS is well known for strong built-in visuals, and Montezuma fully delivers on that reputation. The setting places you in the heart of the Aztec jungle, visible behind the reels. On the reels themselves, you’ll find a mix of symbols, starting with the familiar playing card icons. You’ll see J, Q, K and A, alongside a dragon, an Aztec mask, an ornate headdress, an eagle, and a tribal queen. The top-paying symbol, however, is Montezuma himself, awarding 10 times your stake for landing 5 of a kind.
Montezuma: Features
It would be surprising for a WMS slot to arrive without any special features, and fortunately Montezuma includes a couple of extras to make gameplay more exciting. First up is the Wild Symbol. Shown as an Aztec pyramid, it acts as a wild by substituting for all standard symbols in the game. This wild can only land on reels two, three and four, but it can still help improve your chances of hitting winning combinations.
The second key element is the Feature Symbol, represented by the Aztec Calendar. This is a scatter symbol, so it can land anywhere and still pay, meaning it doesn’t need to appear on one of the 30 paylines. If you land four or five of these symbols anywhere on the reels, you’ll be awarded 10 times your total stake. However, that’s not its only purpose, as three or more will also trigger the free spins feature.
Before Free Spins begin, you’ll spin the Aztec Calendar wheel. This wheel can award different free spin amounts, starting at 3 and going up to a maximum of 25. At the start of every free spin, another wheel spins above the reels and reveals a multiplier of up to 10x. You can also win extra free spins if two or more scatter symbols appear during this bonus round.
Montezuma: Verdict
The Aztec theme isn’t something we’d call unique, as there are plenty of other slots built around it. What stands out, though, is that WMS handles this style particularly well. In Montezuma, a classic land-based slot, you get a solid base game supported by strong bonus features and an impressive maximum potential of up to 3000 times your stake per spin in the bonus (full screen top symbol + 10x multiplier).
The free spins round is the main attraction, largely thanks to the win multipliers that can significantly boost your bankroll. Montezuma offers plenty to enjoy, especially when you factor in the high-quality visuals and the soundtrack included in the game.
