Midway Money: Slot Overview
Despite the name, this game has nothing to do with Midway Games (the studio behind Mortal Kombat). Midway Money is an online slot from Yggdrasil partner Reel Life Games. The title may sound a bit odd if you’re not in North America, but a quick look at Wikipedia explains that a midway is the area of a fair where “carnival games, amusement rides, entertainment, dime stores, themed events, exhibitions and trade shows, pleasure gardens, water parks and food booths cluster.” With that in mind, Midway Money’s theme clicks into place. So, let’s see what Reel Life Games’ midway brings to the table.
Fairs are chaotic mixes of noise, color, and atmosphere, and perhaps Reel Life aimed to mirror that sensory overload. Still, Midway Money’s odd blend of components feels mismatched right from the start. For example, the soundtrack is upbeat, but it doesn’t quite land. It livens up when certain features activate and occasionally leans more into carnival territory, yet it still feels slightly out of tune. The visuals are another question mark. It’s difficult to tell whether the rougher look is intentional or if Reel Life hasn’t fully nailed its pixel-perfect style yet. Players can decide for themselves, though the overall vibe brought to mind titles like Krazy Klimber or Moley Moolah.
On the stats side, it’s fairly respectable: RTP tops out at 96%, though it may drop as low as 86% depending on the market. As a highly volatile slot, Midway Money runs on any device and allows stakes from 20 p/c to $/€50 per spin. The reel layout can shift dramatically when the Strongman feature lands, but the standard setup is 5-reels, 4-rows, with 40 winlines.
Across those winlines, wins are formed by landing three to five matching symbols, drawn from 11 regular pay icons. From lowest to highest, these are 10-A card ranks, bottles, a strongman, a firebreather, a teddy bear, and a ringmaster-style character. A five of a kind pays 1.5-3x the bet for the low-pay royals and 4-10x the bet for five high pays. Three wild symbols show up on the reels, each able to substitute for standard pay symbols to complete winlines. One wild is a 1×1 logo, while the other two are 1×2 Strength Meter wilds, explained next.
Midway Money: Slot Features
To get many of Midway Money’s features going, a linked sequence needs to play out. It begins when 2 wild Strength Meter symbols land fully in view on reels 4 and 5. After that, the bell ringer attempts to ring the bell at the top of the Strength Meter beside the reels. If the bell doesn’t reach the point where it rings, the meter moves up one step (5%), which in theory improves the odds of ringing it next time. Once the bell is successfully rung, the meter resets back to the lowest level.
Feature Selection
When the bell at the top of the Strength Meter does ring, a Ferris Wheel appears. It spins to award one of these feature combinations: Duck Shoot, Fire Eater, Strongman and Fire Eater, Strongman and Duck Shoot, Fire Eater and Duck Shoot, or all three features (free spins only).
Duck Shoot
On activation, the two Strength Meter symbols are converted into targets, and extra targets may also be added onto the reels. Every target is then turned into logo wild symbols.
Fire Eater
When this is awarded, the Strength Meter and Bonus Symbols are converted into 10s. A random symbol is selected, and then all symbols with a lower value are transformed into that chosen symbol. In addition, 2 wild logo symbols are placed on the reels in random positions.
Strong Man
If this one lands, the reels are randomly increased to 5 rows high with 50 winlines, 6 rows high with 60 winlines, 7 rows high with 70 winlines, or 8 rows high with 80 winlines.
Minimum Win Free Spins
When 3 bonus symbols land on reels 1, 3, and 5, players win 7 free spins. If 3 bonus symbols land during free spins, an additional +7 free spins are awarded up to 35 at the most. After 35 free spins have been won, any bonus symbol landing in view awards a 10x the bet win. Just a note. The paytable says 7 spins, but the actual demo only awarded 5 free spins whenever they triggered. What was working was the Minimum Win part of the feature. In the beginning of free spins, the Minimum Win for each free spins is one times the bet. Any time a win occurs that is greater than the current guaranteed Minimum Win amount, the Minimum Win becomes this amount.
Midway Money: Slot Verdict
In a market where even the most forgettable releases can be marketed like masterpieces, it’s oddly nice to stumble on a game that feels a little more modest and self-aware, like Midway Money. Sure, “midway” here points to a specific fairground area, but the game also ends up feeling fairly middle-of-the-road. It’s a strange patchwork of quirky parts, though not in a stylish Tom Waits sort of way, where heavy red curtains open onto a gritty bohemian dream. Instead, Midway Money feels closer to a bundle of leftover pieces assembled together because they happened to be within reach.
Yes, it arguably reflects the midway’s unpredictability, and there’s plenty happening on screen. Still, if the audio and visuals had more punch, Midway Money might leave a stronger impression; as it stands, it came off like a budget take on Play’n GOs circus-themed Golden Ticket 2. The fairground could also use a better bell ringer. For all his exaggerated muscles, watching him inch the Strength Meter forward in 5% steps can be frustrating. Now and then he’ll actually ring the bell and unlock one of the feature combinations, but until that happens, Midway Money can feel like a pretty flat ride. Even ringing the bell doesn’t promise a payout, either. The bell ringer is inconsistent as well—sometimes he seems to ring it constantly, and other times it’s like he’s clocked off for the day. Anyway, that’s the Midway side; what about the Money? This is where it gets a bit unexpected, because if all of Midway Money’s pieces align in just the right way, it’s possible to win up to 7,602x the bet. At least, that’s what the paytable states.
If Midway Money had a sharper hook, it could be more enjoyable overall. As it is, the lightweight presentation didn’t feel rewarding, the features were difficult to activate, and they often lacked impact, so the whole package struggled to really get going. It’s like being a kid who finally snaps together a cheap surprise-egg toy, only for it to break immediately after.
