Megaways Jack: Overview
Megaways Jack is Iron Dog Studio’s second release after Pirate Kingdom Megaways to run on Big Time Gaming’s ever-present game engine. The first outing was solid if a touch safe, yet it came with a bonus round that could deliver eye-watering wins (something players have confirmed since launch). If that game worked for you, there’s a strong chance Megaways Jack will too, as Iron Dog has brought back a lot of the same ideas. The end result is a fairly attractive slot that taps into childhood nostalgia with its fairy tale theme and backdrop. For the true die-hards, it may also spark memories of spinning NetEnt’s legendary Jack and the Beanstalk slot.
It isn’t all sugar and storybook charm, though—one of Megaways Jack’s main hooks is its massive upside, which can make trekking through the syrupy scenery worthwhile. As with the previous title, Megaways Jack uses the 6 reel Megaways setup with 2-7 symbols able to land on each reel. There’s no horizontal bonus reel running across the top this time, but the game still utilises the full 117,649 win ways available.
To sell Jack’s adventure, the background pulls in familiar tale imagery: his home (which hardly looks impoverished) and, naturally, the beanstalk curling up into the clouds on the right. A soft, dreamy soundtrack rounds out the atmosphere while you spin. As usual, you start by choosing your stake via the coins icon. Bets can go as low as 20 p/c per spin or as high as $/€20 at the most. You can spin manually or use autoplay through Iron Dog’s tidy, compact UI that keeps clutter down so the reels take up most of the display.
With so much room, the chunky symbols really pop. First up is the tumble mechanic: wins can chain together because winning symbols burst away, allowing new ones to drop into place for additional chances. It’s useful in the base game as always, and it becomes even more impactful during the bonus features, as covered below. The symbol set is nicely illustrated with a cheerful fairy tale vibe. That includes the 9-A royals, though the higher-value icons stand out more: the cow, the golden goose, Jack’s mum, the giant, and Jack himself as the top symbol, paying 25 times the stake for six of a kind. Jack is also special in that he only needs 2 of a kind to pay, while all other symbols require at least 3. The final standard symbol is the wild, which can appear on reels 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 in both the base game and the bonus. As expected, it substitutes for any regular symbol.
Compared with Pirate Kingdom, some elements are familiar while others have been adjusted. The default RTP hasn’t moved and stays at 96.20%. That said, it shifts when the bonus buy is used, landing between 95.79% – 96.12%. Anyone who wants something harsher than Pirate Kingdom’s smoother ride will likely welcome the added volatility Iron Dog has built in, placing Megaways Jack clearly in the ‘high’ bracket.
Megaways Jack: Features
Much like the core mechanics, the feature set is partly carried over and partly reworked. The most noticeable new touch is the magic harp positioned on the left of the reels. In the base game, the harp can randomly grant:
- Up to 4 extra wilds on tumbles.
- A multiplier of up to x5 on the winnings.
- Up to three extra positions on the beanstalk or the cloud.
- Trigger a respin without losing the beanstalk position.
Magic beans also matter in the base game. Up to 3 may appear on tumbles, and each bean advances the beanstalk by 1-3 positions. The beanstalk lights a leaf with every cascade (or via features), and reaching 8 or more positions triggers free spins as follows:
- 8 – 9 positions award 8 or 9 free spins.
- 10 – 11 positions award 10 or 11 free spins with a starting x2 multiplier.
- 12 positions award 12 free spins and a starting x3 multiplier.
- 13 positions award 12 free spins, an x3 starting multiplier, and a greater chance of getting harp modifiers.
Free Spins include an unlimited win multiplier that increases by +1 on every cascade and begins at x1 unless noted above. Another returning idea from Pirate Kingdom Megaways is that when 7 symbols land on a reel, that reel becomes locked at 7 rows for the rest of the feature. In addition, four consecutive tumbles award +2 free spins, and each tumble beyond 4 adds one extra free spin up to a maximum of 4. During free spins, the harp remains active and can award up to 4 additional wilds on tumbles, or up to 4 free spins, or up to x3 added to the unlimited win multiplier.
The final add-on, where offered, is the Bonus Buy feature. Players can choose between 6-10 free spins, either with or without a locked reel already applied. Depending on the selection, the cost ranges from 30x the bet up to 130x for the fully loaded versions.
Megaways Jack: Verdict
In several respects, Megaways Jack is essentially a fairy tale take on Pirates Kingdom, because under the shiny surface the two games share a lot of DNA. They aren’t straight copies, though, thanks to the extra mechanics and a punchier volatility profile. At its core, if one appealed to you, the other is very likely to land as well. Visually, the quality is on par, although Megaways Jack comes across a bit cleaner and more comfortable to look at (at least in our view). The upside is that these cosmetic tweaks also seem to translate into a smoother, better-tuned experience behind the curtain.
Before fairy tales were softened and sanitised to keep today’s kids squeaky clean, the originals often had a grim edge. Megaways Jack follows that tradition. It may look bright and friendly, but underneath sits a highly volatile math model that can either crush you like a giant’s step or reward you with golden eggs, depending on how it feels.
Nearly everything in Megaways Jack has been turned up compared to Pirates Kingdom. That doesn’t only mean higher volatility—it also means more features and a much bigger ceiling. Where the pirates fought over prizes around 10,000x, Megaways Jack more than doubles that, offering wins up to 25,000 times the stake. That’s genuine golden goose territory.
Even so, Megaways Jack comes across more like a lateral move than a clear upgrade from Pirates Kingdom. It’s certainly not a poor slot, but as a Megaways game it doesn’t feel especially fresh, which could wear thin for some players fairly quickly. Still, the high volatility and enormous max potential easily outweigh any hesitation you might have about spinning fairy tale characters.
