One thing Fantasma reliably do well is build a strong atmosphere around their games. Maze Escape Megaways continues that trend, with a hazy backdrop of mountains and ruins, paired with a classically styled soundtrack drifting through the scene. Gameplay runs on a 6-reel, 7-row grid positioned front and centre. On mobile, the presentation is less striking since the grid dominates most of the screen. Curiously, the game doesn’t officially state the number of ways to win, although a quick bit of maths suggests up to 117,649 is a sensible expectation.

Maze Escape Megaways draws from the tale of King Minos of Ancient Crete. After he rejected the gods, a half-man, half-bull monster was locked away inside his famous labyrinth. The maze was constructed by Daedalus and his son Icarus, the man who famously flew too near the sun. By leaning on such a well known myth, Fantasma can pack Maze Escape with gods, heroes, and legendary creatures

Breaking out of Minos’ Labyrinth isn’t meant to be simple, and Fantasma backs that up with volatility that’s notably higher than in their previous two Megaways slots. The high volatility can pay off when you catch a strong Avalanche streak, which Maze Escape is capable of delivering. That said, it tends to reward determined (or simply fortunate) players, and can feel tougher and less casual-friendly than earlier releases. RTP is set at a dependable 96.15%, and stakes from 20 p/c to $/€40 are available across devices.

In Maze Escape Megaways, wins land when three or more identical symbols connect from left to right starting on the first reel. There isn’t a constant reaction mechanic in the usual sense, but when wins hit particular positions in either the base game or the bonus, the Shifting Maze Avalanche feature kicks in- explained below. As for symbols, the paytable is arranged into three sets of three. Low pays are Greek letters: lambda, theta, and omega, followed by axes, wreaths, and helms in the mid tier. The top tier is made up of three character symbols, paying 2 to 3 times the stake for six of a kind.

There’s an added layer of intricacy; some would call it complexity, and that could be a turn-off for certain audiences. There’s no doubt Maze Escape stands apart. In terms of strengths, it looks fantastic (especially on a larger display), leans heavily into mythology, and the feature set is engaging.
