Mayhem: Slot Overview
Hot on the heels of our look at ELK Studios’ post-apocalyptic slot Nitropolis 3, we move to Mayhem—another end-of-the-world scenario, this time delivered by software provider Red Tiger. Post-apocalypse settings are everywhere right now, across books, films, and slots. And when it’s done well, that dusty, lawless future of anti-heroes, clans, warbands, and scoundrels in the spirit of Mad Max can be a blast on the reels, pushing Wild West ruggedness to the absolute limit. So does Red Tiger’s take feel like it would survive out there, or get flattened by something tougher?
Mayhem kicks off with an exploding mushroom cloud, making the theme instantly clear. From there, Red Tiger leans into a comic-book visual style that keeps things lighter, with a faint echo of Aster of Pan or The Spire graphic novels. From an iGaming angle, it also gives off a Nolimit City kind of energy, with a touch of Cash Truck mixed in, among other nods. Whatever the inspirations, Mayhem’s playful presentation supports the action nicely and set the tone well from the very first spin.
Compared to several of the titles hinted at above, Mayhem is built on a more straightforward foundation. It runs on a classic 5-reel, 3-row layout with 20 fixed paylines. Wins require three to five matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the far-left reel. All of this feeds into an RTP of 95.71%. The game plays smoothly across devices, and bets can be set anywhere from 10 p/c to $/€100.
Looking at the paytable, there are nine somewhat eclectic symbols, split between low-paying 10-A royals and four higher-value icons. The premium set features lips, grenades, helmets, and crowned dollar signs—though you do wonder what good money is in this kind of world. Landing five of a kind returns 0.1-1.5x the bet for the low symbols and 0.40-7.5x for five of the premiums.
Mayhem: Slot Features
There are two additional symbols to watch for in Mayhem: the Cash Queen wild and the scatter, and each one activates its own feature.
Cash Queen
The cyber-styled woman who brings to mind DC’s Harley Quinn is Mayhem’s Cash Queen symbol. Cash Queen is a 1×3 wild that can land on the middle reel only and substitutes for every paying symbol. She always lands fully in view, and whenever she helps form a winning line, she locks to the middle reel. The symbols involved in the win also lock in place, while the other positions respin. If fresh winning symbols appear, they lock too and another respin is granted. Respins stop once no new winning symbols land or once the entire grid has been filled.
Anarchy Spins
Anarchy Spins symbols can show up on reels 1, 3, or 5, and when all 3 are visible at the same time, they award 10 free spins. Throughout the Anarchy Free Spins round, the Cash Queen symbol remains locked in place on the middle reel the whole time. As a result, she activates the respin mechanic every time a winning line hits during free spins. There’s another key change as well. After the first respin sequence, Cash Queen gains an x2 multiplier that applies to every win line created in the bonus. After that, the multiplier grows by +1 following each additional respins sequence, up to a maximum value of x10. Finally, every free spins symbol that lands during the feature adds +1 extra free spin to the spins remaining.
Mayhem: Slot Verdict
If you’re into speculative futures and post-reset worlds, Mayhem is another respectable entry for the list. It isn’t as intricate as some other games in the niche—such as those referenced earlier, or Play’n GO’s The Last Sundown—but its punchy attitude gives it plenty of drive to hold its own. The artwork is sharp too, and while it may not match the offbeat humour of an xWays Hoarder, the graphic-novel styling brings a lot of character.
Much of that character comes from the Cash Queen symbol, which brought back thoughts of Red Tiger’s Hustling slot—just with extra mushroom clouds. That’s partly down to a similar punk/rap edge, and partly because both make heavy use of sticky, full reel multiplier wilds. The difference is that Cash Queen lands in the centre of the grid, rather than the East Coast, West Coast split positioning used in Hustling. Having the wild locked in the middle is not only convenient for chaining wins, it also pairs neatly with the respin mechanic. This style of locked-symbol respin feature shows up from time to time; NetEnt has had a notable liking for it in the past, though it’s not often combined with a sticky, full reel wild.
Mayhem’s symbol payouts feel held back because so much depends on respins, although the Cash Queen feature did activate quite often during our tests—definitely more than expected. The final layer is the progressive multiplier during free spins, which can theoretically generate full-screen wins of up to 1,200x the bet, making it a title aimed squarely at casual players. In the end, Mayhem is a solidly made slot that looks fantastic, but it’s ultimately dragged down by limited potential and gameplay that can feel a little light.
