Maya U Max: Slot Overview
Released in 2020, Gong Gaming Technologies is a studio based in Bulgaria and Malta that has teamed up with Microgaming and put out roughly a dozen slots so far. In terms of themes, the developer has cast a wide net, covering everything from buffalo to Norse mythology to Mexican Day of the Dead. Nothing out of the ordinary there. Still, Gong clearly wants to do more than simply follow familiar templates. Maya U Max, for instance, introduces a straightforward but memorable mechanic that packs extra symbols onto the reels to increase the number of ways to win. Add in retriggerable free spins and a strong max win, and it starts to look like a project with some real potential.
That initial curiosity dips a touch once the game appears, because the display is dominated by the 5-reel, 3-row grid. A small strip at the top shows the current number of win ways, starting at 243, and above the middle three reels you’ll notice clusters of mini symbols. Those mini symbols remain parked there until U Max symbols land on the grid – more on that in a moment. On mobile in portrait mode, you get a more dramatic view of a fiery cave backdrop, although the symbols become quite small, so it’s a bit of a compromise. The theme is largely spelled out by the title, offering a few light Mayan flourishes, but Gong doesn’t lean heavily into it. Instead, the emphasis stays on the symbols and how they interact with the U Max feature.
On the numbers side, Maya U Max posts solid stats without any huge surprises, good or bad. The math model is set to medium-high volatility and delivers an RTP value of 95.69%. Wins land roughly a third of the time thanks to a hit rate of 29.14%. The game runs smoothly across devices, and bets from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin are available.
The symbol set in Maya U Max is colourful, though somewhat simple in style. At the lower end of the paytable are 9-A card royals, decorated with Mayan-inspired colouring to give them a bit more character. A five-of-a-kind pays 1.25 to 2 times the stake. Payouts climb to 3-10 times the stake for five matching premium symbols, made up of purple, blue, green, red, and yellow gems. Completing the lineup is a clearly marked ‘Wild‘ symbol, which has no payout itself but substitutes for anything except the U Max or scatter symbol.
Maya U Max: Slot Features

U Max is the main attraction here and can trigger in both the base game and the free spins round. In the base game, it only applies to reels 2-4. When a U Max symbol lands on one of those middle reels, the 4 mini symbols positioned above the grid drop into that reel position. As many as 3 U Max symbols can land on a single reel, meaning 12 pay symbols or wilds can be added. In the base game, the grid can expand into a 3-12-12-12-3 layout, enabling 15,552 ways to win.
There’s one additional symbol on Maya’s reels: the golden mask scatter symbol. Hitting 5 scatters anywhere on the reels awards 5 free spins. After the initial 5, each extra free spins symbol that lands adds +1 free spin, up to a cap of 36.
In free spins, U Max symbols can now land on all 5 reels rather than only the middle three. If the grid reaches the full 12-12-12-12-12 setup, 248,832 ways are activated. That outcome won’t happen often, since it requires 15 U Max symbols to land in a single spin. The bonus can be extended by landing free spins symbols that add +1 free spin each – with no limit.
Maya U Max: Slot Verdict
With Maya U Max, Gong doesn’t use the game as a vehicle for deep theme-building or elaborate world design. That isn’t automatically a dealbreaker, as long as the gameplay is engaging enough that you don’t miss the extra presentation. To its credit, Maya U Max largely manages that. Spins move quickly, and the U Max mechanic can create genuinely fun moments when enough matching symbols get packed into place to produce a worthwhile win.
Beyond that, there isn’t a great deal more to it, so if the central idea doesn’t fully win you over, the experience can start to feel repetitive since there are few other moving parts. Maya U Max feels a bit like a pared-back, pub-style take on Big Time Gaming’s Megaclusters system, though it does enough differently to stand on its own. A small annoyance is that when a win hits, all symbols wobble, which can briefly make it seem like far more is happening than is actually the case. Not a major issue, but it stands out because the symbols take up almost the entire screen.
Given the sheer number of possible win ways, it’s reassuring that the game also comes with a strong maximum payout. A lower cap could have made the massive ways count feel less meaningful, so it’s hard to argue with a top prize of up to 20,000 times the bet. That figure alone should help Maya U Max, and Gong by extension, get a bit more attention.
Is Maya U Max likely to be Gong’s big breakout title? Probably not, but it does have some genuine strengths, and it’s difficult to be too harsh on a newer studio that’s making an effort to try something different. Players looking for a fuller, more immersive package may find Maya a little sparse, but anyone interested in a different dynamic-reels style mechanic will find it delivers on that front.
