Masters of Valhalla: Slot Overview
Helsinki and Stockholm based studio Snowborn Games has leaned into its Nordic roots to create Masters of Valhalla, a slot featuring several of the best-known figures from Norse mythology. Alongside them comes a set of familiar mechanics, building up to a hold & win type bonus packed with money symbols and special icons that carry a clear Money Train vibe. It’s not the first time Snowborn has taken inspiration from elsewhere, though they’ve added a few tweaks around the edges of Masters of Valhalla—most notably a collection mechanic that can grant extra spins during the bonus. It may not reinvent the wheel, but it has potential, so let’s take a look.
Taking place in a snowy mountain setting, Masters of Valhalla delivers solid visuals without being truly standout. It’s enjoyable seeing different characters appear at key moments, but this isn’t one of those Norse-themed slots that instantly demands attention. Other titles capture a heavier atmosphere and do more to pull you into Nordic lore. Still, the presentation is more than serviceable for the task at hand. The audio follows the same pattern—competent, though not especially memorable.
Masters of Valhalla runs on a 5-reel layout, with four symbols per reel and up to 1,024 ways to win. The RTP is variable, so it’s worth checking, and it peaks at 96%, falling to 94% or lower depending on the setup. On the 96% configuration, volatility is rated high, while the alternative versions are even tagged as ‘Very High‘. Across all settings, the betting range is 10 p/c to $/€25, with a hit rate of 30.12-30.29%.
In Masters of Valhalla, wins are formed when matching symbols land on consecutive reels, beginning from the leftmost reel. The lower-paying set consists of 4 rune symbols, awarding 1.1-1.2x the bet for a five-symbol way. Above them sit four premium icons—Hel, Thor, Freya, and Odin—paying 2 to 3 times your stake for five of a kind. Wild symbols can appear on every reel and substitute for any paying symbol. Wilds also pay in their own right, reaching up to 15 times the stake for five of a kind.
Masters of Valhalla: Slot Features
Masters of Valhalla offers a couple of key targets, with the best-case scenario being to trigger the Valhalla Bonus while the Berserk Meter is fully charged. In the base game, wild symbols can also be used to activate one of four Wild God Respins variations.
Wild God Respins
Wilds appear in four different colours, each tied to one of the four high-paying God symbols. When they land, they are collected, and you can potentially activate the corresponding Wild God Respin bonus. Once triggered, one respin is granted, and during it, 1-19 additional wild symbols are added to the reels, while all God symbols are replaced by the single God symbol that matches the wild that triggered the feature.
Berserk Booster
If exactly 2 bonus symbols land on reels 1 and 3, they are collected into the Berserk Booster meter. When the meter is full, the Berserk Booster is applied the next time the Valhalla Bonus round is triggered.
Valhalla Bonus
This feature activates when bonus symbols land on reels 1, 3 and 5. The grid is wiped and begins with 3 random wooden shields or 3 golden shields on display. With the Berserk Booster active, you start with 4 spins; without it, you begin with 3 spins. During the round, any newly landing symbol resets the spin count back to its original starting number. The symbols used in the bonus are:
- Wooden shields – possess a value of 1-9x the bet.
- Golden shields – possess a value of 10-50x the bet.
- Thor – has a value of 1-9x and expands the reels one row down. Up to two rows can be added.
- Freya – lands with a multiplier value which is applied to all symbols landing on that spin and any following spin.
- Hugin & Munin – land with a multiplier value which is added to all other symbols one time.
- Odin – lands with a multiplier value which is added to all other symbols on that spin and any following spin.
- Garmr – lands with a multiplier value and collects the value of all symbols in view once.
- Hel – the same as Garmr but collects values on all following spins as well.
At times, empty positions are highlighted by blue lightning bolts. When that occurs, those spaces have a greater chance of landing a special non-shield symbol. Also, if every cell becomes filled with symbols, you receive an extra 500x the bet.
Buy Bonus
Where available, Masters of Valhalla lets players purchase two bonus options. The standard Valhalla Bonus costs 50x the bet. Alternatively, Valhalla Bonus with the Berserk Booster already active is priced at 100x the bet.
Masters of Valhalla: Slot Verdict
The previous time we reviewed Snowborn Games was with the well-crafted, cat-packed slot Cat Clans—a title full of likeable characters, strong features, and impressive win potential, and one that felt like a particularly polished release from the studio. Masters of Valhalla was perfectly reasonable to assess, though it doesn’t quite hit the same level of freshness. It’s harder to replicate Cat Clans’ quirky charm when working with a theme as widely used as Norse Gods. Masters of Valhalla has its own appeal, but because so many slots share a similar look and subject, it drops a little in must-play factor—like pulling a common Yu-Gi-Oh card.
The overlap between the two games is that both clearly take cues from Relax Gaming. Cat Clans leaned into Top Dawg$-style sticky wild multipliers, while Masters of Valhalla goes for Money Train inspired gameplay. The upside of borrowing from a proven template is that, provided nothing goes badly wrong, the end result is usually at least solid. And even if it’s not the most original concept, Masters of Valhalla’s bonus can still be entertaining when multipliers start stacking and the special symbols kick in. As a more distinctive touch, the Berserk Booster is a welcome addition. If you’re putting in the spins, it’s good to know you might enhance the bonus when it finally arrives, which is a nice extra. The max potential is also respectable, reaching 20,000x the bet.
Masters of Valhalla delivers some enjoyable play and occasional bursts of excitement, but for truly punchy, high-energy action, Money Train 2 still outclasses it. Compared to Relax Gaming’s blockbuster, Masters of Valhalla comes across more like a title trying to catch up than one setting the pace.
