Lil’ Devil (Big Time Gaming): Overview

You’ve probably noticed Big Time Gaming’s habit of basing certain releases around well-known songs. If you’re into British rock band The Cult, you can likely guess the direction here. Up to now, Big Time Gaming has brought music-inspired slots featuring Electric Six (Danger! High Voltage), Europe (The Final Countdown), and Dio (Holy Diver). With Lil’ Devil, the studio is adding another entry to that growing lineup.

The Cult (not to be mistaken for The Cure) is a hard rock group formed in Bradford, England in 1983. They built a strong UK fanbase with singles like “She Sells Sanctuary” before finding major success in the US in the late 80s. The song “Lil’ Devil” appears on the album Electric (1987) and was produced by Rick Rubin, famous for his work on huge releases from artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and Linkin Park.

Even though it wasn’t officially promoted that way (at the time of writing), Lil’ Devil has enough in common with Danger! High Voltage and The Final Countdown to feel like the third chapter in the same run. Like those two, it isn’t a Megaways title, but it is built on 6 reels, 4 fixed rows and 4,096 ways to win. True to Big Time Gaming’s reputation, it’s extremely volatile and offers a RTP of between 96.31% – 96.43%. If you’re wondering why there’s a range, it’s due to the newly introduced Heartstopper™ feature that upgrades your free spins, which we’ll cover further below.

From a visual standpoint, Lil’ Devil leans into an end-of-days vibe. With a backdrop drenched in yellow and orange colour grading, it looks as if the world is burning or an enormous sandstorm has rolled in. As a nod to the gold-rush slot Bonanza, there’s a wooden shack in the background, and beneath the reels you’ll spot poppy flowers moving softly in the breeze. It’s not the most stunning slot out there, but it still has that unmistakable Big Time Gaming character that many players are drawn to.

A look at the paytable shows six low-value symbols using the familiar 9, 10, J, Q, K and A royals. The higher-paying icons are the alligator, the lizard in a bottle, scorpion and the locked purple heart. That purple heart is the top symbol, paying 10 times your stake for a six of a kind hit. The female devil acts as the wild, appearing on all reels except the first, and it substitutes for every symbol apart from the scatter. There’s also an Angel Wild that only shows up fully stacked in the middle section (reel 3 and 4). In addition, it carries multipliers ranging from 4x – 12x. If you land two of them on the middle reels, they can merge into multipliers as high as 144x.

Lil’ Devil (Big Time Gaming): Features

Lil’ Devil is loaded with features, including a newly trademarked mechanic making its debut here. Before that, though, let’s start with the Free Spins features. To activate the bonus, you need to land 3 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the screen—landing two will play The Cult’s Lil’ Devil and award a heart (more on that later). When the bonus triggers, you’ll be given two choices:

• Be My Angel Free Spins – You begin with 7 free spins, and one regular symbol is randomly selected to function as the sticky wild. If it lands anywhere on reels 2 through to 5, it turns into a sticky wild and stays there for the remainder of the feature. If you manage to fill an entire reel with sticky wilds, you receive 3 extra spins. Even better, if this happens on reel 3 or 4, it becomes an Angel Wild that starts with a 4x multiplier and increases by 2 each spin up to 12x. With two of these in play, multipliers can reach as high as 144x.
• Dynamite Lover Free Spins – You start with 12 free spins, and all symbols that form part of a winning combination, excluding scatters, trigger a reaction and are replaced by new symbols falling in from above. Dynamite Wilds can also land on the two central reels—these increase by 1 on every cascade they participate in and they multiply each other. This feature can be retriggered by landing 3 or more scatters, awarding 6 additional free spins (each extra scatter adds another 6 spins).

Going back a step, remember how 2 scatters in the base game award a heart? Once you’ve gathered 40 hearts, shown by the meters on both sides of the reels, the Heartstopper™ Enhanced Free Spins feature kicks in. You’ll again pick between the same two free spins modes, but now they include extra perks:

• Enhanced Be My Angel Free Spins – The top paying symbol (purple heart) is now also designated a sticky wild.
• Enhanced Dynamite Lover Free Spins – The multiplier of the Dynamite Wild starts at 5x as opposed to 1x in standard mode.

Lil’ Devil (Big Time Gaming): Verdict

By now it’s clear that Lil’ Devil shares a lot of DNA with Danger! High Voltage, and that’s not a negative at all. If anything, it’s refreshing to see Big Time Gaming return to something more direct and simplified after a couple of more complex releases that demanded extra thought from players. Whether it tops the other two titles in the series is debatable, but Lil’ Devil is unquestionably another solid step for the studio and a welcome addition that should deliver plenty of high-tension gameplay and exciting sessions.

On top of that, the Heartstopper™ feature adds value by acting like a small side objective—something to keep you invested whenever a scatter tease ends in disappointment. In that way, Lil’ Devil echoes Kingmaker, another slot where you don’t necessarily want the feature to arrive too early. All told, Lil’ Devil stands as another excellent release from the Australians and a strong follow-up to Danger! High Voltage and The Final Countdown. With its insane volatility and massive upside, it’s built to keep just about everyone on edge.
