Legend of the Ice Dragon: Slot Overview
Dragons are hardly rare in pop culture, yet one of the more unusual branches of the dragon family tree is the elusive ice dragon. If you’re likely to meet one anywhere, it’s probably in books. Examples include The Ice Dragon, part of The Saga of Noggin the Nog, and the famously near-impossible-to-pronounce White Frost Dragon Ingeloakastimizilian, defeated by Wulfgar and Drizzt Do’Urden in the classic Icewind Dale Trilogy. Thanks to Swedish developer Play’n GO, players can now go head-to-head with one of these chilling beasts in Legend of the Ice Dragon, a cluster paying grid slot that builds on an earlier title called Wild Frames.
Play’n GO has certainly shifted gears from the purple-toned Gentleman’s Club setting of Wild Frames to the blustery, snow-covered wilderness of Legend of the Ice Dragon. Is this one aimed at Asian gamblers? Possibly, as an almost traditional Chinese-style dragon sits on the right side of the display beside the 7×7 game grid. On the other side you’ll find the Ice Crystal Charger, while the backdrop switches between a soft pastel daytime look and an aurora-lit scene.
From a maths perspective, Legend of the Ice Dragon moves away from Wild Frames, though much of the time the difference won’t be glaringly obvious. Both the potential and the RTP have dropped, which isn’t ideal, although the default return of 96.29% is still respectable. As ever, it’s wise to confirm the version you’re playing, as it can also appear at lower settings, such as 94.28% or below. Volatility has been toned down to 8 out of 10, which remains high by Play’n GO’s scale. Legend of the Ice Dragon runs smoothly on any device, with stakes ranging from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin.
Using a cluster pays system, payouts land when 5 or more matching symbols connect next to each other horizontally or vertically. As for the symbol set, the paytable climbs from low-value clubs, spades, hearts, and diamonds to higher-paying green, blue, and purple crystals, topped off by a distinctive red eye icon. The largest clusters are 30+ matching symbols, and the premium versions of these pay 75 to 500 times the stake.
Legend of the Ice Dragon: Slot Features
Legend of the Ice Dragon doesn’t include a standalone bonus game, but it does pack in plenty of added mechanics, including cascades, Ice Frames, Freezing features, and Ice Crystal features.
Cascades
When a cluster wins, the matching symbols are removed from the grid, and fresh symbols fall in to occupy the gaps. Cascades may create chains of consecutive wins, carrying on until no new clusters form.
Ice Frames
The horned ‘W’ symbol acts as a wild and generates sticky Ice Frames when it appears. If a wild lands inside an existing Ice Frame, it adds a multiplier that increases by +1 each time, up to a maximum value of x8. For any winning cluster, only the highest multiplier applies. Ice Frames stay in place for the entire cascade run and disappear once a new spin starts. The crucial detail is that Ice Frame Multipliers don’t do anything until the Dragon Blast feature is activated – more on that below.
Freezing Features
On any non-winning spin, there’s a chance that Freezing features can randomly trigger. There are 3 in total:
- Hailstorm – 3 instances of one symbol type on the grid are randomly chosen. These symbols plus up to 5 symbols adjacent to them are destroyed or turned wild. Up to 9 wilds may appear.
- Avalanche – an avalanche covers the grid, destroying all instances of 2 symbol types, leaving up to 7 wilds in their place.
- Blizzard – up to 5 symbols in the pattern are transformed into wilds or destroyed.
Ice Crystal Features
Winning symbols charge up the Ice Crystal Charger, which unleashes Ice Crystal features once enough symbols have been collected. Reaching 20, 40, 60, or 80 charges triggers Tail Lash, Ice Scorch, Destruction, and Dragon Blast, respectively.
- Tail Lash – turns all high pay symbols into one type of high paying symbol.
- Ice Scorch – transforms 3-6 random symbols into wilds.
- Destruction – removes all low pay symbols from the panel.
- Dragon Blast – turns all symbols within Ice Frames into wilds. This also activates the Ice Frame Multipliers.
You can also overcharge the Ice Crystal Charger. For every 10 charges beyond 80, +2 additional Ice Frames are added to the grid.
Legend of the Ice Dragon: Slot Verdict
If you’re after cluster paying grid slot gameplay and your choice is between this and Wild Frames, which would you pick? Both bring strengths and weaknesses. The themes are worlds apart, and several technical points separate them too, so it’s not fair to label Legend of the Ice Dragon as a straight-up clone. In fact, Legend of the Ice Dragon arguably feels more exotic than the fruit/Vegas vibe of Wild Frames. That said, plenty of players will still lean toward the more traditional style over fantasy.
Looking closer at the mechanics, the differences are clear enough on paper and help explain why some players may favour one title over the other. Legend of the Ice Dragon is the lower-volatility choice, and its multipliers top out at x8 rather than x9 in Wild Frames, which also means a smaller maximum win. Even so, in practice the gameplay can feel very similar despite those figures. The aim remains to stack up as many Ice Frames as you can, land consecutive clusters to charge the Ice Crystal Charger, and ideally, set off Dragon Blast so the multipliers finally come into play. Get to that point and the action can ramp up quickly—just perhaps not quite to the same level as Wild Frames. While the earlier game could reach 7,000x (though we still haven’t seen proof of that at the time of writing), Legend of the Ice Dragon tops out at 6,000 times the bet at its peak. Add in the lower RTP, and Legend of the Ice Dragon loses a bit more of its shine.
If you enjoy Play’n GO grid slot titles, Legend of the Ice Dragon is still well worth checking out. The way winning clusters feed into feature triggers works nicely and can occasionally deliver a hefty spin when everything aligns. If you want something a touch more forceful, Wild Frames may be the stronger pick, but the dragon theme makes for a fun trade-off.
