Katmandu Gold: Slot Overview
For adventurer Kane it may feel like another modest step, but ELK’s fifth instalment in the Gold series is a major move for the studio—and their first title to include a bonus buy option. Some developers ease into new mechanics; others dive straight in headfirst. Seemingly influenced by Nolimit City, ELK has gone with a two-choice bonus buy setup. And it’s not only the hefty buy-in that makes Katmandu Gold notable: it brings appealing features, a striking setting, and the biggest potential seen in a Gold slot to date.
And before anyone nitpicks the spelling, “Katmandu” is a valid variant of Kathmandu—simply an older English form. It points to Nepal’s capital, set beneath the Himalayan Mountains. That’s where Kane has headed in search of a breather. After roaming the world chasing hidden gold, the weary explorer has come to the mountain kingdom hoping for some inner calm. Of course, Kane being Kane, he’s managed to trip into fresh opportunity, uncovering old whispers of temple treasure. Let’s just hope he isn’t about to walk off with relics from a local shrine.
ELK has consistently placed the Gold Series in distinctive environments, and Katmandu Gold keeps that streak alive. The familiar 6-reel, 4,096 win ways playfield is framed by two Buddhist-inspired pillars, with an exotic temple far off in the distance, silhouetted by a low Himalayan sun. You won’t actually see the temple until the bonus game activates—until then it’s concealed behind a huge Oriental door. As with other entries, the camera subtly zooms in and out as rows are added or removed from the stack. ELK deserves credit for crafting a scene that pairs seamlessly with the sound design to create a strong overall impression.
Playable on any device, Katmandu offers stakes from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin. The visuals are backed up by an equally solid stats package. There are three RTP settings depending on whether the bonus buy is used: the base game starts at 96.2%, increases to 96.3% with the entry-level feature buy, and reaches 96.4% during the Buy Super Bonus. ELK has pushed the max win higher—perhaps partly to quiet the doubters—while the volatility sits at 7 out of 10, firmly high without being utterly brutal. Keeping things moving are plenty of features, along with a hit frequency of 22.4%.
Each drop begins with wins forming when three or more matching symbols land from left to right. There are plenty of symbols too: J-A as the low pays; earth, air, fire, water as the mids; and turtles, tigers, dragons, plus Kane as the premium icons. Payouts for the six top symbols run from 2 to 4 times the stake. Rounding it out is the wild, which substitutes for everything except the bonus or the Ice Climber symbol.
Katmandu Gold: Slot Features
A big strength of the Gold Series is that ELK usually brings something fresh to the feature set. It doesn’t always land perfectly, but the effort is clear every time. In Katmandu Gold, players get Avalanches, Big Symbols, Ice Climbers, Expanding Wins, Multiplier Free Drops, and—most importantly—the new Buy Feature.
Avalanches sit at the heart of the gameplay, triggering after every win by clearing the winning symbols so new ones can fall in and potentially create another payout. An extra row is also added to the grid, up to a maximum height of 8. Avalanches keep going for as long as wins continue to hit.
Like earlier instalments, ELK leans into Big Symbols, and they return here too. Big Symbols are exactly what they sound like—super, mega, and epic icons sized 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4 that can appear on any drop.
Watch for the Yin & Yang looking symbol called the Ice Climber. When 2 land, the Ice Climber feature activates. All symbols above the Ice Climbers are swapped for wilds or high pay symbols, while any empty spaces beneath them become wild. If Ice Climber triggers on the 8th row, an additional row is added, boosting win ways to 531,441.
Pay symbols or wilds can land with a gold arrow attached above, below, or both—this marks an Expanding Win Symbol. When such a symbol contributes to a win, it expands in the arrow’s direction, replacing every symbol in its path.
The headline feature is free drops, activated when 3 or more bonus symbols appear on the screen during a drop sequence. You receive 10, 15, 20, or 25 drops when 3, 4, 5, or 6 bonus symbols are visible. Free drops can also retrigger. This bonus round differs slightly from earlier Gold games by including a win multiplier that begins at x1. Each time a bonus symbol with an “X” lands, the multiplier increases by +1.
Lastly comes the bonus buy, offered in two versions. The first is the standard 100x the bet cost to purchase 3-6 bonus symbols on the next drop. Then there’s the Buy Super Bonus, which also awards 3-6 bonus symbols, but the win multiplier starts on 10x. It’s a pricey upgrade, requiring 500x the bet to trigger the Super Buy Bonus.
Katmandu Gold: Slot Verdict
Katmandu Gold suggests there’s still plenty of fuel in the Gold Series. Not only has the team found another compelling destination, they’ve matched it with a strong set of features. Overall, Katmandu Gold brings a fresh layer to the series and ends up as the standout entry so far.
Most importantly, Katmandu Gold delivers what the Gold Series is known for: stacking up rows and win ways as consecutive wins roll through. Reaching the eighth row always gives a little buzz, and knowing there’s a ninth row waiting to explode into play if you get that far adds another jolt. The game is packed with small touches like that, where something suddenly clicks—Big Symbols or Expanding Win Symbols—and yanks a cluster of wins out of nowhere. There can be stretches of dead spins, but the sense that the next drop could flip everything is always there.
The win multiplier during free spins is what can unlock the very best Katmandu Gold can deliver. On paper, the top end comes to 10,000x the stake—the highest in the series so far. Some players may miss the safety level mechanic, but the added multiplier helps compensate. That said, the most debated element is likely the new ELK Bonus Buy feature. Paying 100x for free spins is fairly common, but 500 for the Super version? Yes, the multiplier begins at 10x, and the first time we hit it, 6 bonus symbols landed for the full 25 drops. Even so, that steep cost edges toward Deadwood territory and should be approached carefully.
All told, ELK has taken much of what made the first four Gold games so enjoyable, introduced new mechanics, sharpened the audiovisual presentation, and increased the potential to create a highly replayable slot. In nearly every way, this is the biggest entry in the hugely popular range. Katmandu Gold also ramps up the curiosity for what ELK might attempt in the sixth instalment—especially the big question: where will Kane turn up next?
