Jurassic Park Gold: Slot Overview
Since 1993, the blockbuster Jurassic Park series has pulled in billions at the cinema. Plenty of audiences clearly enjoy seeing humans sprint from dinosaurs that have broken loose, and that fascination has carried over to slots as well. Here, Microgaming partner Stormcraft Studios opens the gates for T-Rex’s, Raptors, and Indominus Rex’s to escape and turn the tables on their handlers. It’s the familiar story of humanity pushing technology too far, only to lose control of what it created. As Ian Malcolm put it, ‘Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.’ With that in mind, it’s time to return to Isla Nublar and check out what this dino-packed slot brings to the table.
At first, things feel surprisingly tranquil, considering the theme. The display is busy with buttons, jackpots, meters, and a bright reel set. Early on, the backdrop leans more into the island’s plant life than its wildlife, so you’re mostly staring at harmless greenery. Without the recognisable reel characters, you might not immediately clock it as a Jurassic Park related slot. Luckily for dinosaur lovers, the action ramps up later when the big beasts finally show up to raise the pulse.
Available on tablets, smartphones, and desktop, Jurassic Park Gold offers betting from 20 p/c to $/€30 per paid spin. The RTP is set at 96%, with wins landing at a frequency of 24.1%, delivered in a highly volatile style. Gameplay runs on a 5-reel, 4-row layout with 40 fixed paylines, and winning combinations require 3 to 5 matching symbols.
The symbol set pulls directly from the films, featuring Pteranodons, Dilophosaurus’, and T-Rex’s among the lower-paying icons. The higher pays are the human characters: John Hammond, Sarah Harding, Ian Malcolm, Ellie Sattler, and Alan Grant. Hitting five premium symbols across a payline returns 4 to 10x the bet, while the lower symbols pay 1 to 2 times the stake. The top symbol is the game logo, which is also wild. It can land anywhere to substitute for any regular paying symbol and can pay up to 125x the bet for five of a kind. In the base game, wilds award 2x or 5x when they help form a win.
Jurassic Park Gold: Slot Features
Much like the Gallimimus’ ‘flocking this way’ moment in the original film, Jurassic Park Gold comes packed with features. Here’s what they are.
Link&Win
These branded Link&Wins are appearing more and more often, although they’re not always identical and usually include small twists. To activate it, you must land at least 6 bonus Powerball symbols in the base game. Powerball symbols lock to the reels, and each one carries either a cash value or a jackpot, while also resetting the spin counter back to 3 whenever a new one lands. In addition, collecting 15, 20, 25, or 30 Powerballs unlocks rows 5, 6, 7, and 8, giving extra opportunities to potentially land more wins.
Jackpots
Always visible on the left side, the jackpots are only available through the Link&Win feature. Each Powerball that lands can reveal the Mini, Minor, or Major jackpot, paying 15x, 30x, or 100x the bet, respectively. The fourth prize, the Mega, awards 8,000x the stake and is triggered when every position on the grid has been filled with Powerballs.
Free Spins
Hitting at least 3 scatter symbols starts the free spins bonus rounds, which become available after reaching a required number of free spins triggers. The first three bonuses are Dilophosaurus, Velociraptor, and Spinosaurus, granting 12, 9, and 6 retriggerable free spins, respectively, where wild win multipliers of x2, x5, or x8 can appear. The max win differs per bonus round, ranging from 3,600 to 4,000x.
The fourth option is the Tyrannosaurus Rex Free Spin, which becomes available once the scatter collector is filled in the base game. The meter fills after landing 15 pairs of scatters. During this feature, just 1 spin is played, with a guaranteed Wild Storm feature where up to 5 reels may turn fully wild.
Wild Chase
This mechanic appears in the non-T-Rex free spins bonuses. Whenever a wild symbol lands, it highlights the position where it appeared. If another wild lands on a previously marked spot, it expands to cover the entire reel for that spin. In Dilophosaurus, this may be reel 3; in Velociraptor, it may be reels 2 or 4; and in Spinosaurus, it may be reels 2, 3, or 4. Completing a full reel of marked positions awards +4 free spins.
Jurassic Park Gold: Slot Verdict
Jurassic Park branded slots have done extremely well before, and it’s easy to see Jurassic Park Gold finding an audience too. The presentation is energetic and includes many of the key faces from the 1993 box office hit. Reading that is a reminder that the original film is almost 30 years old, which speaks both to the lasting appeal of dinosaurs in pop culture and how strong the CGI looked at the time. Of course, it may also reflect Microgaming and Co. looking to get more value from the JP license, but whatever the reason for a Gold edition, dedicated dino fans likely won’t mind.
Anyone hoping for a stack of fresh ideas may feel underwhelmed, since Jurassic Park Gold plays very similarly to Thunderstruck Wild Lightning – only with a lower max win. Players who like unlocking bonus rounds over time, or who enjoy the big moment of the single Tyrannosaurus Rex spin where 5,000x is possible, may find it satisfying. Others may not. While Jurassic Park Gold can be fun, it seems most appealing to committed dinosaur enthusiasts.
Take away the polish and remove the dinosaur skin, and what remains is a less lucrative-feeling version of Thunderstruck Wild Lightning, which itself didn’t match the iconic Microgaming original. Still, originality likely wasn’t the goal. Jurassic Park Gold is clearly designed to capitalise on dinosaur hype, and it will probably succeed in drawing in players who can’t get enough giant, extinct reptiles. And if it doesn’t? It’s hardly a disaster—given the gameplay is largely repurposed, it’s unlikely an enormous amount of development effort went into reinventing it.
