Joker Maxima: Slot Overview
Joker Maxima is the second slot release from Blueprint-owned studio Lucksome, arriving after their first game, Divine Links. That debut drew a fairly mixed response and didn’t generate much buzz at launch. It did its job well enough, but given the talent behind Lucksome, expectations were a bit higher. It wasn’t the big statement some players hoped for, though many were still optimistic about what would come next. That next step is Joker Maxima—solidly put together, but not a title that feels like it stretched the developers creatively.
As the name suggests, Joker Maxima leans heavily into joker/harlequin imagery alongside classic fruit symbols. At its core, it’s a straightforward slot built on a traditional 5-reel, 3-row layout with 10 fixed paylines. Behind the reels sits a sea-green, diamond-style backdrop—clean and pleasant, if not especially elaborate. Audio-visually, the biggest highlight is the soundtrack, which is a touch more trance-leaning than the typical house loops found in many slots. Shut your eyes and it could pass for a low-key rave. Over the top of the cosmic beat, the joker lady occasionally drops flirty lines like ‘You can’t win if you don’t play‘ and similar quips.
Playable across devices, Joker Maxima supports wagers from 10 p/c to $/€200 per spin (with the max bet depending on operator settings). Lucksome is refreshingly transparent with the numbers, starting right on the loading screen, where the game shows a volatilely rated 7 out of 10, along with bonus frequency and win frequency of 4/10 and 5/10, respectively. The key details are presented upfront, giving players a quick sense of whether Joker Maxima suits their preferences. Note that when free spins are triggered, you’re offered two routes: a lower-volatility “safer” option and a higher-volatility, higher-upside alternative. Joker Maxima may include a bonus buy, but the RTP stays at 96.11% in all scenarios, regardless of how the feature is activated.
From lowest to highest, the pay symbols are cherries, lemons, grapes, watermelons, bells, and flaming 7s, paying 2-100 times the stake for five of a kind (the last two symbols only require 2oak to pay instead of three). Each standard symbol also has a golden counterpart, and these golden versions pay double the value of their non-golden equivalents. The joker wild is particularly important for multiple reasons. Besides substituting for any symbol except the scatter, landing 2, 3, 4, or 5 jokers on a payline awards 2, 30, 45, or 2,500 times the stake. Jokers also play a role in certain features, as outlined below.
Joker Maxima: Slot Features
Whenever the wild symbol helps complete a winning line, it also adds a multiplier to that win. The multiplier scales with the number of wilds involved, meaning 1, 2, 3, or 4 jokers on a winning line boost the payout by x2, x4, x8, or x16, respectively.
Powerbands feature in both the base game and free spins—when special reels (Power Bands) are chosen, the reels ignite and it guarantees a 20x or greater win. During free spins, if you’ve got a Joker Streak running, the action can ramp up quickly.
There is one additional symbol: the diamond scatter, which appears only on the middle three reels. Landing 3 diamonds awards 10 free spins. Before the free spins start, players select from two options via the Volatility Picker:
- On the left is the Classic Mode which uses the same wild multiplier values as the base game and is less volatile/less rewarding.
- The choice on the right is Maxima Mode, where wild multiplier values may be higher or lower than in Classic Mode, so is more volatile/greater potentially rewarding.
During free spins, any winning combination becomes locked in place and activates a Joker Streak Respin. Respins keep being awarded as long as fresh winning symbols continue to land. It’s also possible to retrigger +5 free spins if 3 scatters appear.
If 2 scatters land in the base game, Lucksome Locks activates. In Lucksome Locks, the 2 scatters remain locked, and only scatters are in play. If additional scatters land, the free games feature is triggered.
Free spins can also be accessed by buying them. The price is 74.6 times the stake, and it guarantees entry into the bonus. The bonus buy is capped at a $/€5 base bet, so if you’re wagering above that, you’ll need to lower the stake to use it.
Joker Maxima: Slot Verdict
Much like Divine Links, it’s worth keeping expectations in check with Joker Maxima. As with their first outing, this is a polished game with more strengths than weaknesses, yet it still leaves the impression that the studio has more in the tank. For a fruit-and-harlequin style slot, Joker Maxima hits the right notes: the stats are in order and the potential is attractive. On the other hand, it’s very much slot design 101—visually similar to countless other titles and lacking that standout, must-see creative twist. Joker Maxima avoids obvious mistakes and, if anything, feels like a safer release than Divine Links.
That said, once the criticisms are out of the way, there’s plenty to like. The feature set is strong, even if the underlying ideas have proven themselves in other games. NetEnt’s Jack Hammer, for example, used a comparable sticky-win approach, but Joker Maxima raises the stakes with some impactful multiplier mechanics. It’s also notable how often symbols can end up “wasted” during Joker Streak Respins due to the limited paylines. It doesn’t happen every time, but it can be irritating. When things align, though, the system works well, and multipliers can significantly lift the final return. While Joker Maxima lists a ‘win focus’ of 1000x, the studio also notes that wins above 10,000 times your stake are technically possible (even though it’s promoted as 7,000x as a more realistically reachable figure) — a strong result for this type of slot.
Overall, Joker Maxima should appeal to players who enjoy this particular style of game. Again, it’s not the innovation-heavy release it could have been, so perhaps Lucksome is happy producing safe—but slick—slots for an established audience. Or maybe the third game will be the one that truly stands out.
