Jingle Balls: Slot Overview

Back in early/mid-2022, Nolimit City released the historical slot Remember Gulag, a title that was later altered in response to the global climate at the time. It delivered a bleak, monochrome experience packed with heavy imagery, yet it was still a top-notch online slot. So, when it came to doing what is essentially a Christmas reskin, it feels very on-brand that Nolimit City would be the studio to take a game centred on a brutal Soviet labour camp system—where an estimated 1.5-1.7 million people died between 1930 and 1953—and rework it into something cheerfully festive.

Calling it a reskin is fair, but only up to a point: the core gameplay is largely unchanged, though the maths has been tweaked, meaning the two games aren’t identical. Those differences are especially noticeable to players who like to scrutinise the numbers. What hasn’t changed is the 3-3-4-4-5-5 gaming grid, but this time the reels are framed with mistletoe, ornaments, and ribbons rather than barbed wire, snow, and despair—at least in the base game. Jingle Balls isn’t pure sweetness, though, and it even slips in a pointed thought: ‘has anyone stopped to think whether Santa himself has been behaving this year?

To get that answer, players are encouraged to ‘sit down on Santa’s lap and find out.’ That involves choosing a bet of 20 c to $/€200 per spin and deciding whether to enable the optional Wish Upon a Star xBet. A key detail is that at the start of every base game spin, reels 5 and 6 are locked. Hitting a scatter unlocks reel 5, and landing another scatter unlocks reel 6. With xBet on, the stake increases by 50%, and a scatter is guaranteed on the second reel, meaning reel 5 is opened automatically. Once all reels are available, the game can reach up to 614,656 ways to win. Volatility is rated as extreme, while RTP is 96.1% with xBet off or 96.22% when it’s switched on.

Wins are paid for matching symbol combinations from left to right, beginning on the leftmost reel. The line-up includes 5 gift-wrapped items as the 5 low pays, followed by Rudolf, the Grinch, an Elf, a granny clutching a handful of balls, and Santa styled like a crazed figure ripped from a Viz magazine strip. Landing 6 matching low pays returns 2 to 3 times the base bet, while 6 matching high symbols pay 4 to 6 times the bet. Wilds can land on every reel too, substituting for any standard paying symbol.

Jingle Balls: Slot Features

The feature set in Jingle Balls includes xWays, xNudge Wilds, xSplit Wilds, three different free spins rounds, plus the feature buys.

xWays

xWays symbols appear on reels 1-2 during the base game and on reels 5-6 in free spins. When an xWays lands, it reveals 2-3 instances of a random pay symbol. If multiple xWays symbols land together, they all reveal the same symbol. If an xWays is split by an xSplit Wild, the xWays multiplier is doubled for each split.

xNudge Wilds

xNudge Wild symbols can land on reels 3-4 in the base game or during free spins. They form a stacked wild symbol that is always nudged to cover the entire reel. With each nudge increases the wild multiplier by +1. If more than one wild multiplier is present, their values are added together, and when an xNudge is split by an xSplit, an extra wild is added onto the reel.

xSplit Wilds

xSplit Wilds show up on reels 5-6 in the base game and on reels 1-2 in free spins. When an xSplit lands, it split all symbols to the left and right, duplicating them. If a symbol is split multiple times, it will display a multiplier. Also, if scatters fail to trigger free spins and an xSplit splits them, they are transformed into a full reel of wild symbols. After landing, xSplit Wilds become two wilds, and those wilds can then be split again by another xSplit Wild.

Free Spins

Free spins start when 3 scatters land to trigger Spirit Spins, 4 scatters for Spirit Spins: All Aboard, or 5 scatters for Spirit Spins: Double Joy. Across all versions, the grid is switched into a 5-5-4-4-3-3 pattern, and every reel stays unlocked for the entire feature. After that, a set-up spin decides how many spins are awarded and which win multiplier applies to the premium symbols. In Spirit Spins, one premium symbol receives a multiplier; in the other two bonus rounds, all symbols get a multiplier. Multipliers are doubled in Spirit Spins: Double Joy. While free spins are running, a reel at the top of the grid can randomly increase the active premium symbols’ multipliers:

  • Spirit Spins – randomly increases the multiplier by +1, +2, or double the value.
  • Spirit Spins: Double Joy – randomly increases the multiplier by +2, +4, or double the value.

Collecting scatter symbols is also part of the feature, with each one granting an extra free spin. If you collect 3 scatters during Spirit Spins, it upgrades the round to Spirit Spins: All Aboard, switching on multipliers for all character symbols.

Nolimit Bonus

Inside the Nolimit Bonus, there are four bonus buy choices. Spirit Spins costs 60x the bet (RTP 96.18%), Spirit Spins: All Aboard costs 270x the bet (RTP 96.27%), Spirit Spins: Double Joy are 486x the bet (RTP 96.36%), or you can pick Lucky Draw for 187.2x the bet and receive one of the previous three options (RTP 96.33%).

Jingle Balls: Slot Verdict

It’s hard to imagine many people playing through Remember Gulag and thinking, wow, this would be a brilliant Christmas slot if NLC just swapped out a few visuals. Yet, once you see it running, the conversion oddly works. The shifting imagery behind the reels in the base game carries a certain emotional weight; parts of the soundtrack feel linked, and the grey, snowy, barbed-wire setting in the free spins portion gives off a strangely familiar atmosphere. Only now, instead of a communist dream/nightmare, Jingle Balls presents a winter wonderland—or perhaps a winter nightmare too. Much like Ugliest Catch, Nolimit City has stepped into a huge, overstuffed, heavily recycled slot theme and plastered it with its trademark ‘couldn’t give a hoot what you think’ attitude—this time with an Xmas coating rather than a fish-and-money-symbol wrapper.

The mechanics are largely intact, which should suit players who clicked with Gulag. So what’s changed? Beyond the new look, it’s mostly the figures. For example, triggering the Time For Vacation In… feature means you’ve reached the max win of 12,250x the bet. That’s almost a third of Gulag’s cap, but the likelihood is more encouraging at 1 in 2.5 million rounds. RTP is lower in certain areas (the overall value is slightly higher), depending on how you approach the game, which is less festive, and the xBet price has gone up. Jingle Balls feels like a balancing act: shave a little off here, add a little there, hope it evens out, then wrap the whole thing in a dysfunctional cast of Christmas characters.

Crack Jingle Balls open from both ends until it snaps, and what you get is a peculiar rework that sits firmly in the surreal corner of the Christmas slot world. It’s softer than the original in some respects, weirder in others, but it still plays for keeps—so if you’re into the oddball, arguably questionable festive humour and you enjoyed Remember Gulag, this one might get its own jingling started. Still, it’s hard to call it a better ride than the original.
