J-POP: Slot Overview

J-pop is commonly known as Japanese popular music, or jeipoppu, but in the iGaming world, J-POP is a slot created by developer ELK Studios. It also comes with a seriously odd bit of lore. The story goes like this: for centuries, the residents of Jellon (not to be confused with Jellyton, which appeared in Cluster Slide) have been using Porta-loos to access Earth, where they snatch key objects for their rituals. What exactly inspired the ELK Studios team to come up with that is anyone’s guess, but it’s definitely out there. The gameplay isn’t quite as surreal, though it still packs a hefty feature set, including a couple of recognisable mechanics borrowed from a certain well-known series.

Whether Jellon is actually linked to Jellyton or not, another ELK Studios title that came to mind after a handful of early J-POP spins was the equally mind-bending (maybe even more so) slot Dream Diver. J-POP is backed by a lively soundtrack and a brightly coloured world where everything looks vividly lit and possibly edible. Whatever the Jellon residents get up to in their rituals, it likely involves plenty of noise, judging by the piles of speakers and instruments scattered around. Overall, J-POP is undeniably strange, and it’s probably best to roll with the weirdness for a bit before deciding how you feel about it.

It may also be worth reserving judgement on RTP until you’ve formed an overall view, as J-POP comes with a return value of 94%. Volatility is rated medium-high (7 out of 10), and the hit frequency of 22% means around 1 in 5 spins lands a win. Action plays out on a dynamic grid, with each base game spin beginning as symbols drop into a 6×4 formation, creating 4,096 ways to win. The grid can expand, which you’ll notice when winning ways connect or big symbols land in particular positions. To take on Jellon, players can choose stakes from 20 p/c to $/€100, and there are also five optional bonus modes available via the X-iter feature buy menu.

Winning ways are made by landing matching symbols on at least 3 consecutive reels, starting from the leftmost reel. Winning symbols are removed and replaced by new ones falling in from above (walking wilds are not removed by avalanches). One extra row is also added to the grid, up to a maximum height of 8 rows, where there are 262,144 ways to win. In the base game, once an avalanche chain ends, the next spin begins again from the standard 6×4 setup. Avalanches keep going until no further win is created.

J-POP’s symbol set includes J-A as low pays, four candy symbols as mid pays, and 4 character symbols as the high pays. A 6-symbol low win returns 0.2x the bet, 6 matching mids pay 0.25-0.5x, and 6 of the same high symbols award 1 to 5 times the bet. There are three types of wilds in J-POP, and each can substitute for standard paying symbols. These are the regular wild, the Wild Box (which adds a random number of wild symbols to the grid when it helps form a win, only replacing empty spaces or pay symbols), and the walking wild, which randomly moves 1 step to an adjacent position and increases its multiplier by +1 when used in a win, taking on the size of the symbol it moves onto.

J-POP: Slot Features

The rest of J-POP’s feature list includes big symbols, Grid Flip symbols, Big Drop symbols, free spins, and X-iter.

Big Symbols

Wilds and regular pay symbols can also appear as Super 2×2, Mega 3×3, or Epic 4×4 sizes – and they count as the equivalent number of 1×1 symbols they contain. Any empty spaces beneath big symbols are filled with 1×1 symbols of the same type, except walking wilds. Symbols that extend above the current row height award a refill to the highest row they reached, up to 8.

Grid Flip Symbols

When the Grid Flip symbol lands, the grid actually flips, meaning columns 1 and 6, 2 and 5, and 3 and 4 swap places. After the flip, Grid Flip symbols transform into wilds. The Grid Flip activates when no additional wins appear.

Big Drop Symbols

The Big Drop symbol causes big symbols to fall onto the grid and crush any 1×1 pay symbols in their path, after which it becomes a wild symbol. Big Drops trigger when no more wins appear. If both the Grid Flip and Big Drop are present, the Grid Flip activates first.

Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 scatter symbols awards 10, 12, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively. Walking wilds are persistent when the feature begins and between free spins. Free spins start with a safety level set to 4 rows, which is the height spins initially drop symbols to. Every winning spin advances the safety level by one row (up to 8), and walking wilds can advance the safety level by several rows. Free spins can be retriggered the same way they trigger in the base game.

X-iter

X-iter features are available from the base game, with the following displayed costs:

  • Bonus Hunt – 3x the bet for a game round with an increased chance of triggering a bonus.
  • Big Drop – 10x the bet for a game round with a guaranteed Big Drop symbol.
  • Walkin Wild – 25x the bet for a game round with a guaranteed walking wild.
  • Bonus – 100x the bet to buy the free spins game.
  • Super Bonus – 500x the bet to buy free spins with a guaranteed walking wild.

J-POP: Slot Verdict

If you’ve been curious about where ELK Studios would take its expanding reel mechanics after retiring Kane in Valhall Gold, J-POP provides the answer. The bigger question is how many players would have guessed those mechanics would return in a game like J-POP. Jellon is a long way from slogging through swamps, scaling windy peaks, or taking cover from volcanoes. Then again, the creatures here are using Porta-loos to reach Earth, and those can be pretty grim. If ELK Studios wanted something that felt fresh after the long-running, successful Kane series, they’ve certainly managed it by filling J-POP with candy and quirky, oddly friendly-looking beings.

The core play is far more familiar, and fans of Kane should feel comfortable right away; even the notoriously poor RTP that weighed down later Gold series entries feels almost expected at this stage. The formula clicks nicely too: land wins, expand the grid, trigger a few special symbols, hit free spins, and hopefully cash in with a bit of luck. It’s a structure that has worked well before and works well again here. On top of that, there are some newer touches worth checking out, such as the Grid Flip and the walking wild. Walking wilds helpfully grow when they step onto a big symbol, though the reverse can happen as well. If a big walking wild moves onto a 1×1 symbol, it will reduce in size. One thing that hasn’t reduced is J-POP’s 25,000x win cap, which is in line with pretty much everything Kane delivered.

Whether J-POP is ELK Studios easing away from a proven set of mechanics they’re reluctant to leave behind, or the beginning of an entirely new series, remains to be seen. For now, J-POP delivered an enjoyable session that feels part familiar and part fresh, and it should give fans of the Gold range something to smile about.
