It may not look it immediately, but this cluster pays game hides a distinctive bonus round deep within its robbery theme, and it can spark a whole range of feelings, from excitement to disappointment to outright frustration.

In the base game, Heist Guys is set in a cool, blue-toned Los Angeles-style scene of high-rises and palm trees, then flips completely during the bonus into a video game-like map screen where the trio tries to raid a building packed with guards, valuables, and more. The base play is fairly standard by comparison, though it’s boosted by a lively hip-hop soundtrack, while the bonus round leans into the more experimental side of ELK Studios—some of which are referenced in the verdict.

Heist Guys runs on a 6×6 area, paying out when clusters of 5 or more matching symbols connect horizontally or vertically. Winning symbols are removed, with the exception of super wilds, which shift to a fresh spot, and then new symbols drop in to fill the gaps. The avalanche chain stops once a drop fails to create another win. With an RTP of 94% across all modes, stakes range from 20 c to $/€100 in a medium volatile setup.

On the reels you’ll find zapper, gadget, and dynamite as the lower-value symbols, three Heist Guy symbols as the higher pays, and the gold bar kicker as the top-paying icon. Heist Guys: Slot Features

Heist Guys comes in two sharply contrasting parts: a base game where big symbols and super wilds can appear, and a hands-off heist bonus where you watch the crew try to pull off the job.

Super Wild

The super wild can replace any symbol except scatters. It starts with an x1 multiplier and moves to a new random position before the symbols refill. Its multiplier increases by +1 each time it contributes to a winning cluster after the win resolves. In addition, after a win, if a super wild helps form a low-pay winning combination, all non-winning copies of that same low-pay symbol are removed from the grid. After a win involving a Heist Guy symbol, that Heist Guy type is upgraded into the highest-value kicker symbol for the remainder of the game round. Upgrading the third Heist Guy triggers a super drop where all non-winning symbols—apart from wilds, scatters, or kicker symbols—are removed.

Bonus Game

Landing 3 scatters in the base game triggers the bonus round. This feature plays out on a map featuring routes, guards, rooms, and a vault. All Heist Guys start at the bottom and travel together towards the vault. Each round, a Heist Guy takes a turn moving the group a random number of steps. They follow arrows matching their colour or white arrows. If no arrow is available, they move upward when possible. Guards patrol specific routes and capture Heist Guys when they are within a certain distance in front of them. That said, Heist Guys can be freed if another member passes the room where they’re being held.

Inside rooms are safes that are opened when a Heist Guy walks past. Opened safes can award coins, keycards, dynamites, zappers, or even the Max Win. A zapper lets you beat a guard once to avoid being locked up, while the keycard is required to open the vault. Without a keycard, the crew can try to hack the vault instead. A successful hack opens it, but a failed attempt ends the feature. Dynamite is needed to open the extra-secure safe inside the vault. Otherwise, the three coloured vault safes can only be opened by the Heist Guy with the matching colour. The feature ends when all Heist Guys are imprisoned, when Heist Guys cannot progress any further, or once the win cap is reached.

X-iter

At the X-iter, players can switch on the Bonus Hunt for 3x the bet, giving 4 times the chance to trigger the bonus. Bangin costs 10x and guarantees two big symbols plus a super wild with a multiplier of x5, while Ridin, priced at 25x, purchases a drop where all Heist Guys are upgraded to kicker symbols along with a super wild carrying a multiplier of x10. The bonus round itself can be bought for 100x, and the super bonus—where the zapper, keycard, and dynamite are already collected—costs 500x.

Heist Guys: Slot Verdict

Even though it shares some DNA with games like Pirots and Dam Beavers, Heist Guys still feels like its own thing with a clearly different approach. The catch is that its real character only properly comes through once the bonus round is in play. Before that, it’s a fairly typical cluster pays title, though it does feature a wild that earns the “super” label—roaming after wins and ramping up its multiplier as it goes. Big symbols are also useful to have on the board, but as mentioned, the game doesn’t fully show what it’s about until the bonus is running, whether you buy it or trigger it naturally.

The bonus round, however, can be brutal. When things aren’t going your way, the Heist Guys can look absurdly foolish—never stepping backwards (they can’t), stubbornly sticking to their route like robots even when it’s painfully clear they’re about to walk straight into a guard and get jailed. On top of that, needing specific items to shoot guards, open the vault, or crack the super secure safe increases the difficulty. A lot of elements have to align with extreme precision, which more often than not felt more irritating than entertaining. That can happen in any slot, of course, but being able to watch the outcome taking shape ahead of time in Heist Guy’s bonus makes it hit even harder.

To be fair, the reverse can also happen. When everything clicks into place, Heist Guys’ bonus round can be hugely rewarding—like smashing your head against a tough puzzle until it finally, finally makes sense. And with a 10,000x cap available, the game is at least capable of pulling off a respectable haul on paper. It’s undeniably smart and different, but it was tougher to warm to than other loosely comparable titles like Pirots, Dam Beavers, or Rogue Rats of Nitropolis.
