Hades – River of Souls: Overview
Developer Fantasma Games expands on the fantasy feel of its earlier slot Heroes Hunt Megaways, but shifts the tone into much darker territory. Here, the Swedish studio drops players beneath the surface, where souls cross the river Styx and drift through the underworld. In this grim realm, daring—or simply fortunate—players can still uncover treasure. Fantasma’s stated aim is to break free of the underworld while collecting as much wealth as you can along the way.
Even with the ominous setup, it’s an objective we can get behind, and Fantasma delivers a suitably brooding setting to chase it in. A 5-reel, 10-payline layout sits inside a jagged, cavern-like underworld, glowing with spectral atmosphere. The scene is impressively built, though it could have landed even harder if the grid were transparent so more of the background showed through. There’s also a strip above the reels used for special symbols, which blocks a bit more of the view. Not a big issue—just something noticeable.
What you can see around the play area are rocky crags and cliff faces, with sparks drifting menacingly up from below. It creates a shiver when you consider the fate of the souls trapped there. Still, let’s keep perspective—this is a cartoon version, not the real deal.
When it comes to the overall sensory package, the sound design is worth calling out. At times it’s genuinely spine-tingling. Alongside the dark, rumbling score, there’s strong choral work too, including a satisfying Book of Ra-style hit when certain symbols land or events trigger.
Spending eternity in the underworld sounds like a harsh sentence, and Fantasma reflects some of that punishment in a highly volatile math model. There’s respectable upside, but extracting riches from below clearly won’t be effortless. Helping steady things over time is a strong RTP of 96.56%, plus a hit frequency close to one in five (19.49%).
Available on all devices with stakes from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin, you win when three or more matching symbols land on one of the 10 paylines – both ways. That means combinations pay left to right and right to left, giving you extra routes to connect.
The paytable is a fun mix of ancient Greek mythology. At the lower end, Fantasma smartly uses museum-style pottery designs featuring ravens, snakes, deer, bulls, and lions. The higher-paying symbols, from lowest to highest, are a kind of gyro, a helmet, Cerberus, Persephone, and finally Hades as the top-value symbol.
Landing five Hades on a line pays 10 times your stake, which then doubles to 20 thanks to pay both ways. Myth says Hades was Cronus’ eldest son, yet the last to be regurgitated—an origin story that apparently earns him the top spot on the paytable.
Hades – River of Souls: Features

Much like the underworld is overflowing with souls, the slot adaptation is packed with features. Across the base and bonus game you’ll find Avalanches, Wild Souls Multipliers, the Skull of Charon, and Hades Free Spins.
Avalanches are active in every mode and trigger whenever you score a win. The symbols that formed the win disappear and new ones drop in, creating further chances to connect. Above the reels, special symbols are shown so players can follow what’s coming—and ideally see them tumble down when Avalanches hit.
Wilds drive the Wild Souls Multiplier, which begins at x1. The wild substitutes for any regular paying symbol, and every 3 wilds used in a winning combination increase the Wild Souls Multiplier by +1. Once an Avalanche chain finishes, the multiplier is applied to the total payout. In the base game, it returns to x1 when a new spin starts.
In what may be the friendliest-looking Charon you’ll ever see, the smiling skull symbol activates The Skull of Charon feature. The skull can show up on any spin and triggers when no further winning combinations remain. It then moves around the reels, clearing 2-10 random regular symbols so new ones can fall and potentially create extra wins.
That brings us to the main attraction – Hades Free Spins. You’re looking for Golden Trident symbols, because landing 3 on the reels awards 10 free spins. Any extra tridents visible add 5 more spins to the total, each. In free spins, 3 winning wilds boost the multiplier by +2, and the big advantage is that it never resets between spins. The feature can retrigger using the same rules as the initial trigger.
Hades – River of Souls: Verdict
Hades – River of Souls is a polished slot with plenty of genuinely fun highlights. It isn’t always easy to get going, but brave and lucky players can find worthwhile rewards. Oddly enough, it reminded me of Avatar UX’s PopRocks. Both are demanding, high volatile slots that depend on a climbing multiplier to really shine. In Hades’ case, that translates to potential wins of up to 5,058 times your stake. The two titles also share a similar mood, although Hades has the edge—helped a lot by its excellent audio and strong visual style.
Visually, the special-symbol queue above the reels is a bit of a double-edged sword. It’s thrilling when those symbols cascade exactly where you need them—and irritating when they don’t. Still, it’s a neat concept overall. All told, Fantasma Games has delivered another very playable slot. It doesn’t quite reach Heroes Hunt Megaways for max payouts or overall gameplay, but it’s an atmospheric ride with engaging features and solid potential.
