The term ‘Tsar’ tends to mean one of two things. In its modern sense, it can describe the person put in charge of a particular government initiative or area, such as an ‘energy tsar’. The other meaning is the historical one, tied to Eastern European royalty, most notably in Russia before the revolution. Coming from the Latin ‘Caesar’, the word evokes immense wealth and authority. That lavish atmosphere is exactly what Red Tiger has aimed to capture with their slot Golden Tsar.

Red Tiger regularly weaves riches into its slots through gems, gold, and mysterious artefacts. Few themes suit that approach as naturally as Golden Tsar, set inside a grand residence—perhaps a ballroom, or the entryway leading to one. The backdrop drips with status, yet Red Tiger deserves credit for not pushing the extravagance into parody, which would have been easy with this concept. There’s a refined feel to Golden Tsar, and the music helps build a convincing place to spin. Golden Tsar runs smoothly on anything from mobile to desktop, with stakes ranging from 10 p/c to $/€40 per spin. As is common with Red Tiger, the figures behind the math model won’t exactly spark a revolution. The standard RTP sits slightly under the norm at 95.77%, and the medium/high volatility feels a touch out of sync with the game’s fairly restrained ceiling. On the brighter side, Golden Tsar’s features seemed to show up more often than in some recent Red Tiger titles. That may just be early luck, but when the main bonus finally lands, it’s a serious event and can be well worth holding out for.

How many players will be willing to wait is another matter. One drawback is the somewhat awkward layout of 6 reels, 4 rows and 30 fixed paylines. Whenever a game uses a large grid like this, the same question comes up—why build such a big play area only to limit it to so few paylines? All of Golden Tsar’s mechanics revolve around pay anywhere expanding symbols—hardly a brand-new idea, but still a fun one. This behaviour can appear both in the base game and during the bonus.

Positioned above the reels are 4 meters, each linked to one of the 4 premium symbols. Every time a premium win lands, the relevant meter fills a little as part of the Royal Expand feature. Once a meter is fully completed, that character turns into a 1×4 Super Symbol. Super Symbols pay from any location across all win lines, meaning they don’t have to land next to each other. Regular line wins are paid first, then the special symbol expands and awards any additional win lines created. If multiple meters are full at once, the expansions happen one after another. In the base game, the effect applies for a single spin, after which the meters reset.

The other feature is Tsar Spins, activated when 3 or more Golden Egg scatter symbols appear anywhere on the reels. Players receive 3 Tsar Spins for each Golden Egg visible, up to a maximum of 18. Before Tsar Spins begin, one symbol’s progress meter is randomly filled and stays full for the entire bonus. During Tsar Spins, you can continue filling the other meters as well, so it’s possible to have all 4 expanding throughout the feature. Additionally, each time a meter is completed, 5 extra spins are added to the remaining total.

Golden Tsar: Verdict

Anyone who likes Ra-style expanding symbols should find plenty to enjoy in Golden Tsar. It’s also nice to see the concept used outside of Ancient Egypt, a shift that seems to be happening more often. For a far more volatile, gothic take, there’s Nolimit City’s Book of Shadows, for instance. Yes, Golden Tsar carries a lot of familiar Red Tiger traits—below-average RTP, the usual audio style, and the reel configuration—but it also has enough going on to make it worth a look.

The standout is the feature set, and having Royal Expands available in the base game helps keep things engaging. That said, you don’t always want it to pop immediately. Ideally, you want several meters close to completion before you trigger Tsar Spins. With more than one expanding symbol active, Golden Tsar becomes genuinely entertaining. You also get solid value from the animation sequence, since multiple expansions take time to resolve as they play out one by one.

During testing, the first set of Tsar Spin awarded produced three expanding symbols and a return of roughly 500x. That’s a strong opener, though if you go hunting for enormous upside, don’t expect a hidden fortune. At maximum, the top prize of 1,936 times the stake doesn’t quite shine like a Fabergé egg.

Overall, Golden Tsar isn’t a genre-breaker and parts of the gameplay feel a bit dated, but the features are enjoyable, and the bonus can deliver a satisfyingly long ride when several special symbols are in play.
