Golden Glyph 2: Slot Overview

The original Golden Glyph was Quickspin’s first slot to introduce a cluster pays mechanic, and credit where it’s due: they delivered a great-looking game with fresh gameplay ideas. The formula centred on cluster wins, leaving Power Glyph wilds behind to set off extra modifiers and, ultimately, free spins. With the follow-up, Quickspin sensibly keeps the foundations that made the first game a hit, while adjusting the surrounding parts. Those adjustments include more features, a smoother flow, and a noticeable boost to the game’s potential.

Looks are subjective, and to our eyes the first game still has the edge visually. Golden Glyph 2 is far from disappointing, though, placing a bright 7×7 grid in a wadi with a pleasing backdrop of pillars, cliffs, and a breezy temple setting. There’s also a rifle-toting rider on a camel in the foreground, seemingly protecting the temple players are about to raid. It’s certainly atmospheric, even if it doesn’t feel quite as striking as the original’s sunrise-over-the-pyramids scene.

Some figures have shifted slightly, while others have surged upward. The default RTP has dipped a touch to 96.09% (versus 96.19% in the original). That said, Golden Glyph 2 introduces three feature buy options, each carrying a higher theoretical return than before at 96.3%-96.6%. Volatility has also been pushed up to 4 out 5. It doesn’t look like a dramatic change on paper, but paired with the much bigger upside, Golden Glyph 2 can be a tougher ride overall. Quickspin also states the hit rate is higher, although no comparative numbers have been shared.

The symbol lineup is broadly similar this time around too. Lower-value icons include water symbols, eyes, Ankhs, and serpents, followed by premium characters such as the Pharaoh, Queen, and a Horus-like symbol. The largest clusters require 15 or more matching symbols and pay 75 to 150 times the stake. That’s slightly lower than in the first game, which sharp-eyed players will notice, but the expanded feature set helps make up the difference. The remaining special symbol is the winged ‘W’ tile, which is wild. It substitutes for any standard pay symbol to assist in forming clusters.

Golden Glyph 2: Slot Features

If you’ve spent time with the original Golden Glyph, the main ideas here will feel familiar, though Quickspin has reworked them to make them more impactful. Everything begins with the Power Glyph symbol, which appears in one of the winning positions after a cluster is cleared from the grid. Power Glyphs act as a wild, and when they’re removed, the next Power-Up on the tracker bar below the grid is activated.

On every spin you’ll see 7 Power-Ups. In the base game, the 7th is always a 2×3 sized Gigantic Wild, while in free spins it is always a Golden Glyph. The first 6 power-ups can be Golden Scarabs, which place 4-11 wilds onto the grid, or one of the 6 Patterns of Horus. When patterns activate, they remove certain symbols from the grid in fixed shapes: Cross, Ankh, Bird, Eye, Hourglass, and Snake.

Land 3 scatters in the base game and you’ll trigger 7 free spins. If 3 scatters appear during free spins, then +5 extra spins are awarded. On the first free spin, you receive a Golden Glyph symbol that remains on the grid for the duration of the feature, moving to a new spot between free spins. The Golden Glyph is wild and carries a multiplier that starts at x1 and increases by one each time it contributes to a winning cluster, up to a maximum of x50. If multiple Golden Glyphs are part of the same win, their multipliers are added together before being applied. Up to 4 Golden Glyphs can be active on the reels at the same time.

The last addition is a bonus buy feature, available in 3 choices. Paying 50x, 150x, or 275x your bet grants access to free spins with 1, 2, or 3 starting Golden Glyphs, respectively.

Golden Glyph 2: Slot Verdict

The first Golden Glyph delivered strong cluster pays action, made even more notable because it was Quickspin’s debut in this style of slot. Rather than simply mirroring what other studios had already done, Quickspin built its own system around Power Glyphs that lead into modifiers and free spins. With the sequel, the studio has followed through by refining the pacing and giving players a bigger dose of the core ingredients.

Still, the road to larger rewards isn’t completely effortless, as a few elements have been trimmed for balance. For example, some symbol payouts have been lowered, most notably the Horus premium, which can result in long stretches of spins that don’t return much. There’s also a longer chain of Power-Up features to progress through each spin – 7 instead of 5, and replacing some of the original Golden Glyph modifiers with symbol-removal patterns can be seen as less thrilling.

On the upside, you no longer have to earn free spins through the Power-Up panel. Triggering the bonus with scatters will likely feel like a cleaner setup for many players. Those drawn-out win sequences from the first game, where you nearly made it only to fall short at the end, are no longer part of the experience. Now it’s simply a case of landing 3 scatters on a spin to get in, or buying the feature if you don’t want to wait. As before, the Golden Glyph symbol is the key difference-maker, and now you can have 4 of them moving around at once Jammin’ Jars style, instead of only one. Altogether, that means more than double the Golden Glyph multiplier power is available, enabling wins of up to 29,500 times your stake.

Anyone who enjoyed the original should be happy with the improvements, and grid-slot fans will find plenty to like in a well-constructed release. It has that familiar Quickspin polish, the features are thoughtfully put together, and the performance figures comfortably outdo the first game. If you want a slot where features don’t depend on collecting winning symbols, it’s definitely worth taking for a spin.
