Still, some genuinely thrilling underground slots have appeared over the years — Dead Canary and Fire in the Hole 2, for instance — so it was time to put on the metaphorical hard hat and see what Four Leaf Gaming brought to the mine.

What turned up was a decent enough game. The theme feels fairly plain, while the features are a touch more interesting. In places, Gold Rush Frenzy Megaways comes across like a vehicle for Four Leaf Gaming to bolt its usual toolkit (Nitro Spins, Super Spinner, and so on) onto a mining backdrop. Looking closer, Gold Rush Frenzy Megaways appears to be a reskin — or very close to one — of one of Four Leaf Gaming’s more recent Megaways releases, Wild Buccaneers Megaways, a pirate-themed slot loaded with features but which ultimately landed with all the impact of a mild bout of scurvy. Gold Rush Frenzy Megaways feels much the same. There’s plenty happening, but the flat, generic presentation and familiar feature set make it hard to really warm to.
