Gemix 2: Slot Overview

Seven years on, Play’n GO has returned to one of its earlier grid-slot successes, Gemix, with a sequel. The studio has done a solid job of carrying over what made the original work (the soundtrack is a major part of that), while introducing a few smart adjustments to how the features function in Gemix 2, alongside a new character and a fresh setting. The presentation has been polished too, and after Reactoonz 2 failed to really ignite, Play’n GO will be hoping Gemix 2 lands with players more convincingly.

In terms of visuals, the two titles are extremely similar, and it’s hard to call a clear winner on aesthetics alone. Gemix 2 does lean a bit more into fantasy with its backdrop, if that sways you. Since players travel between worlds, don’t get too comfortable with the opening Sacré-Coeur-in-the-clouds vibe, as the scenery shifts with each location. Anyone who played the first game can probably “hear” the music already. The Camelot/house-style theme is energetic and, for many, one of the most recognisable tunes in iGaming.

Playable on any device, Gemix 2 allows stakes from 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin – the standard Play’n GO spread. The RTP is also typical for the developer at 96.2%, and volatility sits at medium, much like the original. As expected, the win potential has been raised to 7,500x, though it’s not a dramatic leap considering Play’n GO says the first game can reach 4,500x (a figure we still haven’t witnessed even 7 years on).

One noticeable reduction comes in symbol payouts. Gemix 2 keeps the same count of paying symbols – 8 stones or candy’s in different colours and shapes. What’s changed is the value scale. Here, clusters of 15+ symbols pay 4 to 200 times the stake, whereas previously it was 7.5-1000. A win is formed when 5 or more identical symbols connect horizontally or vertically. Winning clusters disappear and are replaced by new symbols falling from above. Chain reactions aren’t just possible; they’re crucial for setting off the game’s features.

Gemix 2: Slot Features

As with many Play’n GO grid slots, there’s a charge meter at the core, and this one unlocks 4 modifiers. But that’s only part of the package, as players can also trigger a Super Charge, plus World Patterns, Pick A Pocket, and World Wilds.

The Crystal Charge meter fills up when 25 or more winning symbols are gathered in a single spin. When it fills, one of 4 Crystal Charge modifiers is applied to the grid:

  • Nova Blast – a symbol detonates, removing and converting neighbouring symbols.
  • Crystal Warp – a symbol type is chosen at random and warps onto other symbols.
  • Light Beam – a symbol fires beams that transform any symbols they strike.
  • Chain Lightning – a lightning bolt links two corner symbols. All hit symbols transom into one of the corner symbols.

Collecting 50 or more symbols triggers a Super Charge, which unleashes all 4 effects and adds an x2 multiplier. Every further set of 50 collected symbols retriggers Super Charge and increases the multiplier by 2, up to x20.

Also returning from the first game is the World Pattern. This consists of blue tiles beneath the symbols on the grid. When a win lands over them, those tiles turn yellow. Converting the entire pattern to yellow clears it, and every win contributes to a prize pot known as the World Bonus. Once a world is cleared by completing World Patterns, G-Nome appears and shows 2 pockets on his coat. Choose the correct pocket to claim the World Bonus.

In addition, 4 guardians can appear randomly during gameplay, each providing a different wild symbol. The heroic character adds up to 2 Mega wilds with multipliers, while the miner drops up to 10 wilds at once. The princess supplies wilds that can spread from one edge to the other, and the wizard brings up to 5 sticky wilds.

Gemix 2: Slot Verdict

For players looking for an entertaining grid slot that’s more cute than brutal, Gemix 2 fits the bill. It’s packed with personality, oddball characters, changing backdrops, and plenty of feature activity. The adjustments help it stand apart, even if they don’t quite make it feel outright superior or radically different from the original. Reduced symbol values can make it tougher to build momentum at smaller stakes, but the larger multipliers mean it can beat its predecessor when things start clicking.

Gemix 2 is also very easy to keep playing. It not only channels a Candy Crush-style vibe, it also delivers that intense “one more spin” pull that’s difficult to resist. Interestingly, a big driver is the World Pattern mechanic. Yes, there’s a financial reward for turning tiles from blue to yellow, but it also taps into something more instinctive. It’s the same urge you get from neatly fitting pieces in games like Tetris, or creating perfectly straight stripes while mowing a lawn. Maybe it’s a built-in need to impose order and symmetry on randomness and chaos. Or maybe it’s simply the money.

Speaking of money, Gemix 2 boosts the maximum potential, as sequels often do to make the upgrade tempting, though the increase still isn’t enormous. The truly wild moment would be the spin that erupts into a 7,500x bet win. That would mean Gemix 2 has thrown almost everything it has into the mix to produce it. The main thing that often holds players back is the much lower symbol payout values. The trade-off is that when part two hits a serious hot streak, the x20 multiplier dwarfs the x3 from the original and becomes the feature that can really change the outcome.

After the lukewarm reception Reactoonz 2 got, it’ll be worth watching how Gemix 2 is received. There appears to be more that differentiates Gemix from Gemix 2 than there was between the two Reactoonz titles, but we’ll see. And with time spent on Gemix 2, it becomes clear just how strong the first game was. Gemix 2 can sound a little complex on paper, yet it essentially comes down to chaining as many wins as possible to keep retriggering Super Charge. Straightforward in concept, and more addictive than ever in practice.
