Game of Gladiators (Play’n GO): Review

We’re not exactly newcomers to fighting it out in Roman arenas, and although we’ve taken our fair share of brutal defeats—often watching the balance bleed out faster than you can say gladiator—there have been a few bouts that ended in triumphant glory, which are naturally the ones we stubbornly remember. Swedish provider Play’n GO has explored plenty of historical settings over the years as a slot developer, but it has never tackled ancient Rome.

That’s about to change with this 5-reel, 20-payline slot called Game of Gladiators. Available on all compatible devices with stakes ranging from 20 cents to 100€ per spin, it includes a set of random base-game extras known as the Primus Mystery features, plus a free spins round where your selected Champion scatter battles gladiators to award extra spins or cash prizes.

From a psychological angle, slot studios often build games to feel bright and cheerful—qualities that don’t exactly match what most people connect with this brutal period of history. Creating a gladiator slot that keeps some sense of grit while still being attractive to players is a tricky balance. The palette in Game of Gladiators is noticeably more muted than usual, but with a few flaming touches, some blood, and light animation, it comes together well enough. It’s not revolutionary artwork, yet the visuals are sturdy and fit for purpose.

Taking place in a shadowy stone tunnel beneath an amphitheatre, the reels show A to J royal symbols. The bigger payouts come from the four gladiator characters: Scissor, Provocator, Murmillio, and Rectiarus, with Rectiarus as the top-paying fighter, awarding 20 times your stake for 5 of a kind. Even stronger is the tiger wild which, besides substituting for all regular symbols, pays 25 times your stake when you land 5 across a full payline.

Game of Gladiators (Play’n GO): Features

Primus Mystery feature with the Fame feature triggered

During the base game, you can benefit from 5 randomly activated bonuses known as the Primus Mystery features. Here’s what may occur:

  • Fame – one gladiator symbol is selected at random and you receive a payout according to the Battle Prize paytable (we’ll clarify what that means a bit further down, so keep reading).
  • Spear Attack – between 3 and 6 tiger wilds are randomly added onto the reels.
  • Sword Attack – reel 1 is duplicated 2, 3 or 4 times, meaning the same symbols appear on multiple reels. In the best-case scenario, you can end up with 5 reels showing identical symbols.
  • Net Attack – all matching gladiator symbols are locked in place while a respin takes place.
  • Enraged – when this triggers, 2 fully stacked tiger wilds are added at random.

The feature you’ll really be aiming for is the Enter the Arena Battle feature, triggered when 3 Portcullis scatter symbols land on reels 1, 3 and 5 in the same spin. After that, you choose a Champion—Spartacus or Amazonia. The fighter you select will replace the scatter throughout the Free Spins feature.

The round works like this. Any matching premium symbols that land are gathered into a group and placed above the reels on the Battle Meter—the more you collect, the larger the Battle prize. Each scatter that appears will initiate an attack on a group of gladiator symbols and wipe it out. If 2 scatters land, 2 gladiator groups are attacked and a 2x multiplier is applied to your Battle prize. If 3 scatters land, 3 gladiator groups are attacked and a 3x multiplier is applied. The free spins end either when all groups are destroyed or when the collected gladiators completely fill the Battle Meter.

On top of that, each Champion comes with a distinct Victory Prize if they win the fight. If you choose Spartacus, his reward is a retrigger. If you pick Amazonia to handle the battle, you receive a cash prize ranging from 20 to 100 times your bet.

Game of Gladiators (Play’n GO): Final Verdict

If this review has you feeling a bit confused, don’t worry—Game of Gladiators is much easier to play than it is to describe on paper. The key takeaway is that it’s a high variance slot (9/10), so charging in aggressively can leave you with some painful scars along the way.

Although the base game offers a few entertaining mechanics, the payouts tend to be fairly modest overall. The bigger wins are expected to come from the Enter the Arena Battle free spin feature, where you’re supposedly able to win up to 5000 times your stake. In practice, though, it’s difficult to see how that would realistically happen. Even if the free spins seem to trigger quite often, the returns are usually small here too. You’d have to stack an absurd number of small-to-medium wins to get anywhere close to the advertised max win. Honestly, you’d likely be pleased to leave with 500 times your stake in this one, considering how low most payouts feel. For a gladiator-themed slot, it plays surprisingly tame.
