Buddha is best known for sharing the ‘Three Universal Truths and Four Noble Truths’ (among many other teachings), but here he’s been reimagined as something of a funk icon. Not that history backs that up, of course, yet thanks to Blueprint Gaming’s imagination we get Funky Buddha, an online slot that plays with a more playful (and arguably invented) angle on the famous spiritual figure. In a classic slot-game irony, Funky Buddha isn’t especially original under the hood, as it borrows most of its core mechanics from The Goonies Hey You Guys, another Blueprint Gaming release that arrived only shortly before this one.

With visuals that bring to mind Fantasma Games’ Fortune Llama, Funky Buddha invites players into a luxury poolside scene framed by palm trees, speakers, and a cocktail spot, with boats resting out at sea. The soundtrack fits the setting nicely too—laid-back and groovy, with a touch of trance in places—basically the kind of music you’d expect by the pool. It may not have the same cosy character found with Sloth and The Goonies, but as a make-believe summer escape, it does the job well enough.

Funky Buddha runs on 5-reels with 3 rows of symbols and 10 paylines. Payline wins require at least 3 OAK, landing on consecutive reels starting from the leftmost reel. The math model is listed as medium/high volatile, and the RTP comes in two versions, with the higher default set at 95%. There’s no bonus buy or ante bet here, so players simply choose a stake from 10 p/c to $/€100 and keep spinning. Foot-tapping, naturally, is up to you.

While the payline count is modest, the symbol payouts are decent. They’re not quite at ‘book of’ levels, but a 5 OAK line of cocktails, glasses, headphones, or bottles pays 10 to 100 times their bet. The card royals J-A are less exciting, as expected, returning 5 to 7.5 times the bet for 5 OAK. Cash Collect

At the start of a session, the first Buddha Collect symbol is active, and it can appear on the rightmost reel. If 1 or more Cash symbols land on reels 1 to 4 and a Buddha Collect symbol lands on reel 5, the Buddha Collect symbol expands to cover the whole reel, and the Cash symbol values are collected.

After this happens, the next Buddha Collect symbol type becomes unlocked and can then land on the grid. Each time the newly unlocked Buddha Collect symbol appears and collects Cash symbols, the next one is unlocked, continuing until all 4 Buddha Collect symbols are unlocked. From that point, all 4 will be available in both the base game and free spins. The first Buddha Collect symbol only collects Cash symbols; the remaining three work as follows:

• Respin – collects Cash symbols then locks in place while reels 1 to 4 respin for another chance to land Cash symbols.
• Boost – collects Cash symbols and awards a cash boost to the total.
• Super Collect – collects Cash symbols up to 10 times.

Alongside standard Cash symbols, there are also jackpot versions—Mini, Minor, Major, and Mega—valued at 10x, 25x, 100x, and 2,000x the bet, respectively.

Land 3 scatter symbols on reels 2, 3, and 4 to trigger 10 free spins. Free spins use the same Cash Collect setup as the base game, but whenever a Buddha Collect symbol lands, it is collected on a meter. Gathering 3, 6, 9, or 12 Buddha Collect symbols activates a multiplier of x2, x3, x5, or x10, respectively. At each milestone, +5 free spins are also added. These multipliers increase the value of collected Cash symbols.

Funky Buddha: Slot Verdict

Whether online gambling helps anyone step off the wheel of Samsara is debatable, so Funky Buddha’s Buddhist connections feel a bit questionable, but it is undeniably a fairly funky slot. The music has a solid groove, and some players will likely enjoy the theme’s nods to luxury and taking it easy. On a less money-focused note, this is worth sharing because it’s an interesting line; from Wikipedia: ‘Samsara ends if a person attains nirvana, the “blowing out” of the desires and the gaining of true insight into impermanence and non-self reality.’

Back in everyday reality, there’s Funky Buddha—and if you played Goonies Hey You Guys a few weeks earlier, you’ll immediately recognise the formula. Funky Buddha is a cash collector-style slot with a couple of tweaks, including the fact that there are 4 Buddha Collector symbols to unlock and explore. As before, Funky Buddha follows a similar pattern to D10S Maradona, with a Big Bass Bonanza flavour added into the bonus round. Maybe Goonies Hey You Guys didn’t become the instant hit Blueprint Gaming hoped for, or maybe the studio simply figured that if one version works, two is better. Either way, the two titles are worlds apart thematically while remaining very close mechanically. As before, the win cap is whichever comes first – 50,000x the bet or $250,000 (or the currency equivalent). As is often the case with Blueprint, that feels a little ambitious.

If you’ve ever been curious what a Buddha/Mammon mashup might look like on the reels, Funky Buddha should scratch that itch. Beyond that, it wasn’t the most exciting session—especially since it’s essentially a reskin arriving so soon after the original. Still, the soundtrack is enjoyable, and the upside is that anyone who likes what Blueprint Gaming is doing with these cash collector games has another entry to add to the collection.
