Fruit Combinator: Slot Overview

Time to get your greens in, or at least pretend to, as Yggdrasil Gaming partner studio ReelPlay serves up a video slot called Fruit Combinator. It’s a fruit-themed game built around ReelPlay’s multi-part mechanic known as a ‘reverse cascade’. Alongside this ‘revolutionary’ element (their wording), Fruit Combinator also packs in extras such as Explosive Reactions, Symbol Morphs, and Win Boosters.

Fruit slots aren’t usually known for deep storytelling, layered worlds, or lavish scenes, and Fruit Combinator leans hard into that simplicity. The action is shown from a pilot-like viewpoint, as though you’re looking out from a cockpit while clouds and blue sky rush past. The background animation makes it feel like the three-fifths-full grid is blasting through the stratosphere. Four fixed prize values sit on the left of the screen, with the UI on the right. It’s either impressively minimal or a bit too plain—your call—so let’s get into the stats.

On to the key figures, starting with the big one: the default theoretical return to player is 96.1%. The game runs on a low volatile math model and uses a grid with 6 reels, each reel featuring 5 positions. That said, base game spins always start with 3 rows of active symbols and 2 rows left blank. The features section below explains how those empty spaces can be filled. Until then, the bet range runs from 20 p/c to $/€40 per spin, and there’s no bonus buy or ante bet available.

As you’d expect, the pay table is packed with fruit. The lower-value symbols are 10-A card royals, while the higher pays come from a strawberry, watermelon, orange, plum and a bunch of grapes. Hitting a 6-of-a-kind winning way returns 0.5 to 1 times the bet for the low pays and 1.2 to 10 times the bet for the highs. Wilds are also present in Fruit Combinator, appearing on every reel except the leftmost one. Wilds replace all symbols apart from the scatter.

Fruit Combinator: Slot Features

This is the core loop in Fruit Combinator. Winning combinations form when matching paying symbols land on 3 or more adjacent reels starting from the left side of the grid. When a win lands, the non-winning symbols are removed (scatters are excluded), and the winning symbols fall to the bottom of the grid. This stage is the Explosion part of the process.

After that come Morphs. If more than one symbol type is visible sitting at the bottom of the grid, all pay symbols morph into the highest value pay symbol in view. Wilds and scatters do not morph.

Then there are Boosters. If, once Explosions and Morphs have resolved, any previous winning symbol is no longer in a winning position, extra matching symbols are added so it becomes a winning symbol again.

Next up are Drops. At this point, a new symbol is dropped onto the top of each reel that contains fewer than 5 symbols. Any dropped symbol that doesn’t match or substitute the current paying symbol explodes. Any dropped symbol that does match or substitute but doesn’t land in a winning position also explodes. Scatters are always retained, as are any symbols that match or substitute in paying positions. If the total number of kept symbols is greater than the previous Drop’s kept count, another Drop is triggered (or in the base game before any Morphs or Boosters if it is the first Drop). Wins are paid once no further Drops occur.

Free Games

Free games start when at least 3 scatter symbols land, and only after base game Drops have finished. Each scatter’s prize value is paid, and 3 free games are granted. Landing another scatter resets the free game counter back to 3. At the end of any free game, the prize value shown on any scatter is paid. Scatter symbols can be worth 1-100x the bet or award the Mini, Minor, Major, or Grand bonus valued at 10x, 50x, 250x or 2,000x the bet, respectively.

Fruit Combinator: Slot Verdict

Whether you love them or avoid them, fruit games are something most slot players will run into sooner or later, and usually more than once. Fruit themes have been around since near the beginning of slots and will probably still be there right up until the end, whenever that might be. The upside is that developers have massively expanded the range of themes over time, so players now have hundreds—if not thousands—of non-fruit alternatives.

Back to this particular title: fruit fans have plenty to choose from, and Fruit Combinator may not sit near the top of many lists. In many ways, it feels like a straight copy of another ReelPlay game, Professor Clank’s Combinator. Maybe the original resonated with enough players to make a reskin worthwhile. Given how broadly fruit themes appeal, Fruit Combinator could potentially reach more players than Professor Clank’s Combinator did. Still, if you’re not specifically chasing fruit, the theme here doesn’t feel as fresh or as engaging as Professor Clank’s Combinator. It’s essentially fruit, clouds, and reused mechanics—hardly the kind of thing that demands a big fanfare.

That brings the review to an end for a slot that was fine to spend some time with, but didn’t offer much that truly stood out. And without trying to be harsh, Fruit Combinator largely plays exactly like what it is: a clone that feels more generic and less distinctive than the game it was adapted from.
