Fortunium Introduction

Fortunium was first presented earlier this year at the ICE show in London, where Microgaming made a big deal out of it. As it turns out, though, it isn’t actually a Microgaming title, but instead comes from a studio called Stormcraft Studios. Naturally, we tried to dig up some details about this rather mysterious developer—something that proved harder than expected.

Either way, Fortunium is a 5-reel, 5-row slot with 40 paylines, offering stakes from €0.10 to €125. Much like NetEnt’s Steam Tower, it leans into a steampunk setting and follows two characters—Victoria the explorer and Maximillian the inventor (not that it really matters).

Fortunium Symbols

The slot features 5 high-paying symbols along with 4 low-value ones. The low symbols are hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds, while the premium set consists of Victoria symbols, Maximilian symbols, chests, zeppelins and nerf guns. The two best-paying symbols are stacked  full reels high, and both pay 8x for 5 of a kind.

The wild symbol behaves as you’d expect and pays 20x for 5 across a payline. The Scatter symbol is shown as a green glass sphere and awards 100x if you manage to hit 5 of them.

Fortunium Mystery Symbols & Win Booster Features

The Mystery symbols feature triggers whenever Mystery symbols (question marks) land on the reels. When it activates, they reveal a randomly selected symbol, which can be any symbo except the Scatter. On the left side of the reels you’ll find the Win Booster button. If you use it, all low-value symbols are removed from the Mystery reveal pool, meaning only premium symbols and wilds can appear. Activating this option increases your bet by 50% (€1 bet turns to €1.50).

Fortunium Free Spins

The free spins round is triggered by landing 3 or more scatters anywhere on the reels and grants 10 free spins. Any scatter that land during the feature adds one extra free spin. In addition, hitting 3, 4 or 5 scatters awards 1, 2 or 3 Mystery reels per spin respectively. These Mystery reels include premiums and wilds only, so it’s possible to end up with 3 full wild reels on every spin.

Fortunium Conclusion

Fortunium sits in the low-to-medium variance range and doesn’t offer huge upside. Even a full screen of wilds only returns 800x, although it also doesn’t seem completely out of reach. The game promotes a max win of €100,000, which with a max bet of €125 equals 800x, so it’s possible that this is the ceiling even in the bonus. If that isn’t the case, you could theoretically hit 10 full screens of wilds during free spins for 8000x, but we suspect the payout is capped at 800x. Maybe Microgaming could clarify.

Fortunium isn’t a total write-off, but it’s not exactly a standout either. It’s a bit puzzling why Microgaming has pushed it so heavily—though if it truly has 8000x potential, or even half of that, then it would definitely be worth taking for a spin.
