Fish and Bird: Slot Overview
It’s hardly a hot take to say players are always chasing something fresh, and whether they’re winning or losing, they still want the experience to feel entertaining and varied. One of the ways studios keep things from getting stale is by changing the shape of the playfield—adding or removing reels, rows, or ways to win. In theory, almost any configuration can work, yet one layout that hasn’t been used all that often is the 4×4 format. Big Time Gaming has experimented with it more than once in slots like Donuts or Pop, and now ELK Studios steps into the same space with the 4×4 fishing-themed slot Fish and Bird.
What immediately separates Fish and Bird from many fishing slots is the visual style. Rather than going for the usual super-bright, bubbly look, it leans into a muted, gloomy, almost worn-down atmosphere—yet in an appealing, believable way. That’s especially amusing because the game also carries a strong cartoon vibe. You can almost feel the fisherman’s daily grind as he rows out each morning with “nothing but wind in his beard and hope in his creaky bones.” The soundtrack adds to the tone as well, with a distinctly European feel that can swing from slow traditional notes to Eurovision energy and back again in an instant.

The 4×4 gaming grid features 256 ways to win, forming winning combinations from the leftmost side across adjacent reels. The game’s volatility sits around medium (6 out of 10), and the RTP is 94% when staking 20 c to $/€100 per spin or when purchasing features via the X-iter menu.
Wins can be made with 3 or 4 OAK, and there are eight standard paying symbols in total: four lower-value jellyfish and four higher-paying fish. Landing 4 matching jellyfish returns 0.2x the bet, while 4 matching fish pay between 0.5x to 2x. Every paying symbol aside from wilds can appear in four sizes – 1×1 standard, 2×2 super, 3×3 mega, and 4×4 epic.
Fish and Bird: Slot Features

Fish and Bird lets players gather Prize fish and bird multipliers while moving through the base game, plus the bonus and super bonus rounds. ELK Studios’ X-iter area is also available for those who want to purchase specific features instantly.
Spreading Wilds
Spreading wilds (and bonus symbols) act as substitutes for all paying symbols. Vertical wilds expand to fill every position on their reel, while horizontal wilds extend to cover all positions across the row.
Collector
The guy above the reels sitting in the boat is the Collector. He gathers any bird multiplier, Prize fish, and bonus symbol that appear in the same column as him. The Super Collector collects any multiplier in its column, plus all Prize fish and bonus symbols anywhere on the grid. When Prize fish are collected, they award the value shown, multiplied by the current global multiplier. When a bird above the grid is collected, its value is added to the global multiplier. Whenever a Collector or Super Collector collects a Prize fish, a free spin is awarded, and the Collector/Super Collector moves one column to the left. Each round begins with a reset global multiplier.
Diver
When Prize fish or bonus symbols are visible but there is no Collector or Super Collector, there is a chance a diver will show up, dropping down the grid and collecting any Prize fish, bonus symbol, or multiplier in its column.
Bonus Game
The bonus game activates by collecting a bonus symbol during the base game. The bonus round guarantees 1 Collector, and after each spin the Collector moves one column to the left. A new Collector can arrive after a spin, and the round finishes once no Collectors remain visible on the screen. Collecting a super bonus rather than a standard bonus symbol starts the super bonus round, where only Super Collectors can appear.
X-iter
The X-iter feature buy menu includes Bonus Hunt at 2.5x the bet, purchasing a round with more than triple the chance of triggering a bonus round. The Spreading Wild feature is priced at 10x, while a round with a guaranteed big fish symbol costs 25x the bet. You can buy a regular bonus round for 50x or the super bonus round for 250x.

Fish and Bird: Slot Verdict
Fish and Bird is another reminder that the unstoppable wave of fishing slots eventually pulls everyone into the net. In this case, “you” means software providers, because up to now ELK Studios had mostly avoided this massively popular slot theme. The studio already knows its way around birds thanks to the Pirots and Tropicool series, and while they brushed close to the subject in Oxygen/Oxygen 2, fishing has largely been left untouched. True to ELK Studios’ style, Fish and Bird mixes classic fish-slot staples with some less common ideas that still come together surprisingly well.
Most importantly, if you’re looking for an angling slot where you can actually land fish money symbols, Fish and Bird delivers. Collecting can happen throughout all stages of play, and placing the fisherman above the grid instead of inside it is a slightly unusual touch. It’s not entirely unprecedented, since Big Time Gaming’s Golden Catch and Play’n GO’s Boat Bonanza used a similar approach. Even so, it feels like less familiar territory for fish-slot regulars, and keeping the fisherman off-grid adds a bittersweet charm while also letting him snag birds from the air to boost the global multiplier. On top of that, rather than awarding a fixed batch of free spins when the bonus triggers, the game puts a fisherman on screen and has players follow his movement from right to left, hoping another fisherman appears on the far-right side to extend the bonus—an extra twist that makes the flow feel more distinctive.
On the downside, the base game can sometimes feel extremely flat, with stretches where very little of note happens. Still, if the old, creaky guy manages to haul a freakin whale out of Fish and Bird, the slot can pay up to a 10,000x the bet maximum win. That’s a strong ceiling for a fishing slot, and it helps round out a release that ELK Studios has kept straightforward while adding enough depth to tempt a broad range of fishing-themed slot fans.
