El Patron feels like the product of a tequila-soaked late night where San Quentin xWays collided with NetEnt’s Narcos. The interesting part is that Narcos was officially branded from the Netflix series, whereas El Patron could easily have taken cues from a show called ‘Pablo Escobar, El Patron Del Mal‘, released in 2012 and later added to Netflix. The original Colombian telenovela ran for 113 episodes, which Netflix trimmed down to 74. Even after the cut, it still covers virtually every detail most viewers could want about the crime lord’s life.

As for the slot itself, El Patron was enjoyable enough, though it didn’t completely knock us out. When the two bonus reels match up, the base game throws plenty of bullets and dollar bills around, but the results didn’t often amount to much. It came across as more quantity than quality—like turning up to an Olympic pistol event with an AK47 and spraying rounds everywhere, hoping something eventually hits the bullseye.

That style landed better during free spins, where the machine gun sends wilds across the reels instead of limiting them to only the triggering reel. As expected, standard wilds showed up most often, then multipliers, with sticky wilds the least common. The bonus rounds had a decent amount going on, but nothing close to San Quentin, where multiple elements can combine into more elaborate chaos. El Patron usually delivers one moving part at a time, with minimal overlap between features, so there’s not much build-up. The rewards can feel a bit restrained too, despite a win cap of 25,000x, which is still a pretty hefty figure.

If you want a safe, arm’s-length taste of one of the world’s most dangerous lifestyles, El Patron could fit the bill. It doesn’t hit as hard as it potentially could and ends up looking a bit outmuscled by the heavyweight slot it partly echoes.
