Duel At Dawn: Slot Overview

In the crowded shootout that is the online slot Wild Western category, plenty of titles ride in, but only a handful truly rise above the rest. One Western slot that genuinely left its mark was Hacksaw Gaming’s Wanted Dead or a Wild. Its brooding oil-painting look, wide-ranging gameplay, and a strong x-factor helped it separate itself from the pack. The studio later returned to the dusty Ol’ West with 2 Wild 2 Die, and now—like a stubborn hombre fuelled by sarsaparilla who refuses to stay down—Hacksaw is back again for more frontier gunplay in Duel At Dawn.

Duel At Dawn doesn’t exactly offer a welcoming introduction. That’s largely because the Outlaw is aiming his pistol straight at the player, angled downward, as if you’re kneeling in the dirt begging for mercy. Visually, it leans closer to 2 Wild 2 Die than Wanted, opting for a more realistic style over a more artistic one, which can make it feel a touch less eye-catching. Still, the presentation holds up well, and that gunman brings plenty of menace as he shadows players through every stage of the action.

Duel At Dawn runs on a 5-reel, 5-row layout and offers 19 ways to win. Winning combinations start from the leftmost reel and must continue across adjacent reels. Bets range from 10 cents to $/€100 per paid spin, and for those who like to jump straight into the action, there are five bonus buy options available. With medium-high 4 out of 5 rated volatility in play, Duel At Dawn’s top RTP is set at 96.3%.

The low-paying symbols are the literal J, Q, K, and A playing cards. Each one pays 1x the bet for a 5 OAK win. Above them are cartwheels, skulls, hats, pistols, and sheriff badges, which return 3 to 10 times the bet for a 5 OAK hit. Wilds can land on any reel and substitute for any standard paying symbol to complete wins. A full wild 5 OAK awards 10x the bet.

Duel At Dawn: Slot Features

Duel At Dawn slot – Wild Wild West feature

Duel At Dawn comes loaded with DuelReels, The Outlaw Feature, a Wild Wild West bonus, a Dusk ‘Til Dawn bonus, and bonus buys.

DuelReels

Whenever a VS symbol lands, it expands into a wild DuelReel if expanding it would make it part of the win. Once expanded, a duel takes place on each reel. Every DuelReel contains two multipliers of x2 to x200 tied to the Outlaw and the Sheriff. The character who wins the duel applies their multiplier across the entire reel, impacting any wins that include that DuelReel. If more than one DuelReel contributes to the same win, their multipliers are added together before being applied. Only one VS symbol can land on a reel, and DuelReels act as wilds.

The Outlaw Feature

When an Outlaw symbol appears, it expands into a full wild Outlaw reel, showing a revolver with 1 to 6 bullets in the chamber. The bullet count equals how many wild symbols the Outlaw fires onto the grid. If more than one Outlaw lands, they cannot shoot wilds onto the same positions, and they also can’t shoot each other. Up to 2 Outlaw symbols can land in a single spin, limited to one per reel. Each Outlaw reel also carries a multiplier of x2 to x200 that applies to any win it helps form. If more than one Outlaw reel is involved in the same win, their multipliers are added together before being applied.

Wild Wild West

Triggering 3 FS scatters in the base game awards 10 free Wild Wild West spins. The mechanics remain the same as in the base game, but there’s an increased chance of landing higher-value multipliers on DuelReels and Outlaw reels. There’s also a greater chance of seeing VS and Outlaw symbols. Landing 2 scatters adds +2 free spins, while 3 scatters add +4 free spins.

Dusk ‘Til Dawn

Landing 4 FS scatters in the base game awards 10 free Dusk ‘Til Dawn spins. During this feature, players can gain 4 DuelSpins with guaranteed VS symbols. Each DuelSpin is unlocked by landing Outlaw symbols and shooting 6 wild symbols onto the grid. This doesn’t need to happen all at once. Each DuelSpin is granted after the spin on which it was unlocked and does not consume one of the awarded free spins. Up to 2 DuelSpins may be unlocked on one spin.

In addition, multiplier DuelSpins are awarded in sequence before the next free spin continues. Every following DuelSpin guarantees more guaranteed VS symbols. The first guarantees at least 2 VS symbols, the second guarantees at least 3 VS symbols, the third guarantees at least 4 VS symbols, and the fourth guarantees 5 VS symbols. Each unlocked DuelSpin also awards +3 free spins. VS symbols do not appear in this bonus, except during DuelSpins.

Bonus Buy

Duel At Dawn’s selection of bonus buys includes: BonusHunt FeatureSpins (3x the bet) – Each spin is 5 times more likely to trigger free spins, Deadly Duels FeatureSpins (60x the bet) – Each spin guarantees at least 2 VS symbols land. FS scatters do not land in this mode, Lone Outlaw FeatureSpins (60x the bet) – Each spin guarantees at least 1 Outlaw symbol with at least 2 bullets lands. FS symbols do not land in this mode, Wild Wild West Bonus (100x the bet), or Dusk ‘Til Dawn Bonus (200x the bet).

Duel At Dawn: Slot Verdict

Hacksaw Gaming clearly knows how to put together a compelling Western slot. Circling back briefly, part of why Wanted Dead or a Wild stood out is that, up to that point, Hacksaw Gaming had largely been known for lighter, cuter releases like Cash Compass or Hop ‘N’ Pop. Since then, the studio has embraced darker themes plenty of times—Hand of Anubis and Rotten being two standout examples—and it’s proven it can build feature-rich, complex slots just as confidently as it can deliver more laid-back Pocketz titles. Another area where the developer shines is taking a strong concept and refining it across later games, something it has done repeatedly—and does again with Duel At Dawn.

That’s a positive here, because the returning VS symbols and the wild-shooting bullets can be genuinely exciting. They already make a strong impact in the base game, where the full-reel wild multiplier Outlaw symbol—combined with the wild shots—can create a lot of chaos on the reels. If 2 Outlaws land together, which likely won’t happen too often, it’s time to take cover. VS symbols have shown their value ever since Warrior Ways introduced them, and they perform just as effectively in this title. The Wild Wild West bonus round spices things up by theoretically improving the odds of landing stronger outcomes, while Dusk ‘Til Dawn pushes the refinement even further. One important detail is that although 6 shot wilds are required to earn a DuelSpin, you don’t need to fire all 6 in a single moment—the progress of emptying the chamber is carried over. And it hardly needs saying how appealing it would be to land all 5 VS symbols on the reels.

The 15,000x the bet win cap is one of the final finishing touches on Duel At Dawn, but just as thrilling is how the game can suddenly flip into full shootout mode at any time. There’s no promise it will, of course, yet Hacksaw being Hacksaw, Duel At Dawn is packed with the kind of rapid-fire, get-shot-to-bits moments the studio is known for.
