Devil’s Crossroad: Slot Overview

Some corners of the Internet (Wikipedia included) suggest that crossroads can symbolise a boundary between worlds, a spot where humans might encounter supernatural forces. A well-known tale is that of American bluesman Robert Johson who, legend has it, traded his soul to the devil for unmatched guitar skill. In this review, it looks like Nolimit City has been flirting with the occult to summon Devil’s Crossroad, a slot packed with infernal temptation.

Nolimit City has never exactly shied away from life’s darker themes. Prior to Devil’s Crossroad, there were sinister outings like Book of Shadows, Blood & Shadow, True Kult, plus other titles that, while not always directly connected, still lean into gloom in their own ways. Here, the darkness is channelled through the devil himself, seated at the centre of the base-game setup, positioned over a pit rimmed with jagged teeth as though the reels are perched above a drop into the underworld, right where two roads intersect. Devil’s Crossroad also carries a familiar warning: however tempting the bargain and however appealing the shortcut to fame, glory, or whatever the id craves, it’s worth thinking twice—because the bill eventually comes due, and that part may not be enjoyable.

Thankfully, Devil’s Crossroad is only a game, and it plays out on an unusual layout split into 4 cross sections, with each section holding 4 symbols that connect at the middle via a Devil Wild. Winning combinations are removed when they land, and symbols then fall towards the centre. Fresh symbols drop in to cover any gaps created along the way. Instead of wagering souls, players can bet 20 c to $/€200 per spin on an extremely volatile slot with a default RTP of 96.06%, or 96.04% to 96.1% when buying features.

Dirty road-sign icons marked 10 through A act as the low pays in Devil’s Crossroad, returning 0.4 to 1.2 times the bet for a 5 OAK win. The top tier consists of five character symbols—each with their own backstory and reason for making a deal—paying 2 to 10 times the bet for five of a kind. The devil in the centre is wild, and any paying symbol adjacent to the centre position may randomly switch into a wild known as Cross Wilds. All wilds substitute for any regular pay symbol.

Devil’s Crossroad: Slot Features

In many ways, Devil’s Crossroad’s base game feels even more unconventional than its hold ‘n win-style bonus rounds, though both Redemption Spins and Upgraded Redemption Spins feature a long roster of special symbols that can inject extra energy into proceedings.

Cross Multiplier

Whenever a win lands, the same symbol type is removed from the other cross sections if those symbols weren’t part of the winning cluster. Each symbol cleared this way increases its cross section multiplier by +1. Any wins are then multiplied by the multiplier of the cross section they occur in.

Scatters

Scatter symbols may show up in the centre row or column of their cross section. If a scatter lands next to the centre position, the other symbols in that cross section become inactive, and identical symbols in the remaining cross sections are removed. Symbols removed in this manner will not return for the rest of the cascades. Each symbol removed this way increases its cross section multiplier by +1.

Redemption Spins

Hitting 4 scatter symbols activates Redemption Spins. The feature starts with 3 spins and resets back to 3 whenever a coin lands. Coins carry a bet multiplier value. When a column becomes completely filled with coins, a modifier is granted for that column on each following spin. The modifier applies to the coins in the column where it appears. The modifiers are:

  • Gluttony – add its value to all applicable coins.
  • Wrath – multiplies the value of a randomly selected coin on its row/column.
  • Lust – progresses a level towards upgrading Redemption Spins.
  • Greed – selects a random coin from its row/column, which gets all the coin values from its column/row respectively.
  • Envy – transforms a randomly selected coin’s value into a copy of the highest coin value on the reels.
  • Pride – selects a random coin from its row/column and adds its value to all other coins on its column/row, respectively.

Redemption Spins may be upgraded by collecting 4 levels on the upgrade bar or if all 4 scatter symbols land next to the centre position in the base game. The upgrade bar collects 1 level for each Lust feature triggered or for each scatter landing next to the centre position in the base game. Upgraded Redemption Spins award a feature for completing rows as well as for completing columns. The devil coin is a special coin that can land during Redemption Spins, unlocking a modifier on its column. If Redemption Spins are upgraded, then it also triggers a modifier for its row.

Nolimit Bonus Buy

From the Nolimit Bonus screen, players may purchase Redemption Spins for 80x the bet (96.04%), Upgraded Redemption Spins for 500x the bet (RTP 96.05%), or a 50/50 Lucky Draw for 250x the bet (96.1%).

Devil’s Crossroad: Slot Verdict

Devil’s Crossroad marked Nolimit City’s first release of 2024, and if it sets the tone, it could be another engaging year for players who enjoy the studio’s distinctive approach. It doesn’t open the year with the same explosive impact that San Quentin delivered in 2021, for instance. Still, Devil’s Crossroad is worth a look for Nolimit City fans, or for anyone drawn to the idea of striking bargains at crossroads with otherworldly forces.

That said, Devil’s Crossroad doesn’t dig into its premise as deeply as a slot like Blood & Shadow managed. Overall, it’s also less provocative than many releases from this developer, which is a bit unexpected. Nolimit City could have leaned harder into diabolical visuals for a more shocking ride, yet Devil’s Crossroad feels comparatively restrained, aside from the unsettling four-eyed cat during the bonus rounds and the interesting win-count stories. The gameplay also balances structure and freedom. The segmented base game is a smart concept and may bring to mind titles such as Gluttony or The Cage, but the mechanics are straightforward and unlikely to cause much confusion. Watching wins form in unusual patterns can be entertaining, and the max win of 13,180x, theoretically landing at around 1 in 3.9 million spins, is respectable even if it isn’t mind-blowing.

Even so, Devil’s Crossroad didn’t truly stand out as a must-play. Nothing is outright wrong, but the theme feels a little underpowered for Nolimit City, the tempo slightly slow, and the bonus rounds—while able to produce decent outcomes—come across as fairly ordinary, especially next to games like Fire in the Hole xBomb or Dead Canary. While Devil’s Crossroad clearly separates itself from the sea of generic fruit and joker-style slots, it also feels as though the urge to shock and push thrilling new boundaries has cooled compared to earlier Nolimit City releases, and long-time NLC followers may have hoped for more from Devil’s Crossroad.
