Das xBoot: Slot Overview
Das Boot is a 1981 film that earned widespread critical praise and is often regarded as one of the finest—and costliest—movies ever made in Germany. It was adapted from Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s 1973 book of the same title, recounting his time aboard the German submarine U-96 in the perilous Atlantic during World War 2. A WW2 U-boat theme about sinking Allied ships isn’t exactly the most obvious concept when studios are pitching new slots. But if Nolimit City has proven anything, it’s that they don’t think like a typical developer—taking Das Boot and turning it into Das xBoot, a layered slot loaded with an armory of add-ons.
Das xBoot is essentially a mash-up of mechanics and feature ideas seen across earlier Nolimit releases, blended into one game. Visually and sonically it leans hard into Das Boot, with the action set in a gloomy grey sea beside the submarine’s starboard flank. Oddly, for a slot rooted in the Kriegsmarine, it can feel a touch restrained—especially arriving so soon after Mental. Still, the atmosphere is strong: comic-book styling is paired with an excellent Jaws-meets-Klaus-Doldinger-meets-Blade Runner 2049 soundtrack, adding a constant sense of lurking danger that keeps the tension pleasantly high.
You can play from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin. The base game runs on a 6-reel layout set in a 2-3-4-4-3-2 formation, and the grid can shift depending on the phase of play or when certain symbols appear. At its simplest, the game offers 576 ways to win, but this can expand to 75,712 when conditions line up. As expected, Das xBoot is a highly volatile title—scored 10 out of 10 by the studio. The RTP is variable, so it’s worth checking you’re on the 96.03% configuration, which is the most player-friendly. Win frequency sits at 22.07%, while free spins arrive roughly once every 211 spins on average. There are two bonus levels, determined by how many scatters land to trigger them.
Looking at the symbol set, there are ten standard paying symbols, plus a selection of special ones. Lower values are the 10-A card ranks, while the premium symbols are five crew members—chefs, radio guys, engineers, periscope operators, and captains. The top payer is the Kapitanleutnant, awarding 20 times the stake for a six-of-a-kind hit.
Das xBoot: Slot Features
Long voyages need supplies to keep you going, and Das xBoot is stocked with extras, including xNudge Wilds, xWays, xBomb Wild Multipliers, Silent Hunter Spins, and Wolf Pack Spins.
First up are the wilds: the xNudge Wild is a 4-row-tall wild that will always nudge to be fully visible. With each nudge, its wild multiplier increases by +1. xNudge Wilds can land on reel 3 or 4 only, except during Silent Hunter Free Spins, where it can appear only on reel 4. All multipliers add to each other, and the game calculates wins using the combined multiplier total.
The xWays symbol appears only on reels 2 or 5 and reveals 2-3 copies of a regular random symbol. If multiple xWays symbols land, they will all reveal the same pay symbol.
If an xBomb Wild lands, the global win multiplier increases by +1, after which it detonates and clears all non-winning symbols from the reels. Once the explosion is done, the xBomb turns into a wild symbol. Any remaining symbols then fall to the bottom, with fresh symbols tumbling in above. Should free spins trigger on that same spin, the multiplier carries over into the bonus.
Watch the sonar display, as it serves as the scatter symbol and shows up on reels 2-5. Hitting 3 of them triggers 8 Silent Hunter Free Spins, while seeing 4 of them activates 8 Wolf Pack Free Spins.
In Silent Hunter Free Spins, reel 3 extends to 8 positions high (periscope-style), and a new Periscope Wild can land there. When matching symbols land on reels 1 and 2 while a Periscope Wild is on reel 3, a torpedo launch sequence occurs and the win multiplier increases by +1. The game shows a brief attack animation; if the target is sunk, the Periscope Wild expands to cover reel 3. In addition, each time the Periscope Wild stack nudges down to fill another position, the multiplier for that reel increases by 1. That amount is added to any global win multiplier. If the attack fails, the Periscope Wild stays as a single wild. Lastly, any scatter on the screen awards +2 additional free spins.
During Wolf Pack Free Spins, a torpedo tube sits beneath reels 2-5. When new torpedo wild symbols land on those reels, they drop an xWays symbol into the torpedo area. These xWays begin at x2 and rise by +1 with each subsequent torpedo wild that lands afterward, up to a maximum of x9. Once all 4 positions in the torpedo are filled, it launches away to reveal xWays symbols. On reels 2 or 5, the revealed xWays convert into that number of regular symbols; on reels 3 or 4, they convert into the corresponding number of wild symbols. Each torpedo launch also boosts the win multiplier by +1. As with the other bonus, scatter symbols grant an extra +2 free spins.
The final addition is the Nolimit Bonus feature buy, letting players purchase either bonus. Silent Hunter Free Spins cost 75x the bet possessing an RTP of 96.57%, while Wolf Pack Spins cost 350x the bet while having an RTP value of 96.58%.
Das xBoot: Slot Verdict
Das xBoot is more complex than average, though it’s still far less bewildering than Mental was. You’ll likely need a handful of bonus rounds to fully grasp how everything interacts, but once it clicks, the confusion doesn’t linger. Interestingly, coming right after Mental, Das xBoot can feel comparatively lightweight—which is a strange thing to say about a slot set in one of World War 2’s most dangerous theatres. The comic-book visuals soften the harshness somewhat, yet the ship-sinking focus and ominous soundtrack do an excellent job of creating suspense.
Its feature set reads like a greatest-hits list of Nolimit City staples. Restricting certain special symbols to specific reels was a smart move, keeping spins varied while allowing effects to stack when multiple mechanics land together. Silent Hunter Free Spins typically deliver 1 or 2 Periscope Wilds per round, giving you a realistic shot at turning reel 3 fully wild. Add an xWays symbol or an xNudge at the same time and things can get very lively. That said, Das xBoot is a volatile game, so expect plenty of “Scheisse” moments too (the slot’s own term).
As with other Nolimit City releases, one monster spin can flip the entire session, and Wolf Pack Free Spins are the most likely place for that to happen. This is where you want to stack as many xWays as possible in the torpedo area. If you then manage to launch it, the next spin can be utterly wild, with extra ways, multipliers, and potential wilds all colliding. Be ready for heavy teasing, though. During testing, one final Wolf Pack spin launched the torpedo—boosting ways, adding wild stacks, xWays, the lot… only for nothing to connect on reel 1. The result was a funny-but-painful “Nein, nein, nein” animation as the game sympathized with the near-miss.
Das xBoot plays in such an all-or-nothing way that it almost mirrors a doomed or successful submarine hunt. On a more sobering note, some estimates suggest U-boat sailors had only a 20% chance of surviving the war. In comparison, the chance of landing Das xBoot’s max win is smaller still. But if you do, you’re in line for a massive payout of 55,200x the bet, triggering the Das Gold Des Roter Teufel feature as the round ends.
If Mental is still fresh in your memory—good or bad—it might dull Das xBoot’s punch a little, but it remains another huge, high-volatility powerhouse from Nolimit City. Once again, the team has chosen a theme many studios would avoid and paired it with gameplay that’s just as willing to torpedo hopeful players as it is to reward them.
