Dark Spiral runs on a 6×4 grid, with wins created by matching symbols across three or more adjacent reels, starting from the far left. The game’s Summoning symbols can add extra symbols onto the reels, massively boosting the potential—taking the game from 4,096 ways to win up to a maximum of 331,776. Horror slots aren’t exactly unheard of—Print Studios, for instance, have done the style brilliantly with games like Dreadworks and Darkness—but it’s still not the most common theme. Looking at a big portion of releases, it seems many players would rather spin in upbeat settings: not always jokers and fruit, but worlds that are colourful, bright, and energetic. Dark Spiral goes completely the other way. It’s the kind of game that sits in a freezing, shadowy room in an oversized armchair, sneering at everything—then tears away life’s thin, polished surface, stripping back the civility we impose on ourselves to stare at what writhes underneath, and what it finds is a cold, indifferent, malevolent universe beyond our scientific rationality and overconfident self-belief. Or something like that.

That said, when you move from theme to the actual mechanics, Dark Spirals felt a bit like a horror film where the ending doesn’t fully deliver on the setup. Visually, there’s not much else quite like it, aside from comparisons to titles such as Darkness or Blood and Shadow, but the features didn’t generate the same level of excitement. The gameplay revolves around Summoning symbols, which are a neat idea, though they came across as a less high-octane take on the Nitro Reels seen in ELK Studios’ Nitropolis slots. With the huge number of potential ways to win and a win cap of 10,000x, Summoning symbols can certainly produce a hefty result in theory, but in practice they felt a little flat, as if an extra killer modifier was missing to truly make the hairs stand up—especially given Dark Spiral’s deeply unsettling world.

Even so, Hacksaw Gaming earns credit for choosing to build something genuinely different from the cute, cuddly slots filling the market. If you can handle the imagery, Dark Spiral delivers a distinctive ride, even if the gameplay doesn’t get quite as extreme as the body horror it showcases.
