Cygnus 3: Slot Overview

The Cygnus constellation may be unimaginably distant, but Cygnus 3—the latest entry in ELK Studios’ Swedish slot series—lands much closer to players. With this release, the lineup effectively becomes a trilogy (for now), and ELK Studios pushes the concept into areas the first two titles didn’t really explore. That Roman flavour shows up on some symbols as well, and as with earlier games, the blend of astronomy and history gives Cygnus 3 an intriguingly esoteric feel—like it’s in on secrets the rest of us haven’t learned yet.

Rated highly volatile, Cygnus can be played in two formats—regular mode or bonus mode through the X-iter feature. In either case, players choose a base stake from 20 p/c to $/€100. The RTP is also unchanged across both modes at 94%, which was typical for ELK Studios around this period, though it’s a step down from the original Cygnus’ 96.1%. As before, Cygnus 3 uses a 6-columned grid, with each spin dropping in 4 rows of symbols, though the Avalanche mechanic can expand the height to 8 rows. The reels don’t align neatly, so when symbols Avalanche, the gravity mechanic makes them slide left or right as they fall, rather than only dropping straight down.

Any symbols forming a win blast off the grid and are replaced by new symbols avalanching into place. At the same time, an additional row is added, up to a maximum of 8 rows. Avalanches keep chaining until no further winning combinations appear. With 4,096 to 262,144 ways to win, wins start from the leftmost side and require matching symbols across at least 3 adjacent reels. There are seven standard pay symbols: low-paying diamonds, pentagons, and hexagons that return 0.2x the bet for 6 OAK, plus higher-value eagles, horses, lions, and wreaths paying 0.4 to 10 times the stake for landing 6 OAK.

Cygnus 3: Slot Features

Circling the starry backdrop is Cygnus 3’s prize wheel—named the Cygnus Wheel. It’s the central mechanic of the game, working alongside Avalanches, multiplier wilds, free drops, and the X-iter bonus modes.

Multiplier Wilds

The values of multiplier symbols and multiplier wild symbols on the reels are added together and applied to each win. After a multiplier wild contributes to a win, it turns back into a standard multiplier. When a multiplier symbol reaches the bottom row for the first time, it reactivates its wild ability.

If a Cygnus Wheel symbol makes it to the leftmost column, a spin of the Cygnus Wheel is granted once the Avalanches finish. Free Drops

Every free drop starts with 4 rows of symbols. Multiplier and multiplier wilds remain on the bottom row between drops, making the multiplier level persistent. Any multiplier symbol that hits the bottom row for the first time will have its wild ability reactivated. During free drops, a Cygnus Wheel spin can still be triggered if the Cygnus Wheel symbol reaches the leftmost column.

X-iter

The feature buy X-iter menu allows players to play Cygnus five different game ways:

Cygnus 3: Slot Verdict

Playing Cygnus 3 felt like returning to a beloved TV series where most things are familiar, but one major role has been recast. You might pay 500x the bet to trigger the Cygnus Wheel with what should be the most favourable bonus setup and… end up with a 5x instant prize. Brutal. No consolation round of weak free drops—just a quick result and straight back to the base game, almost as if you’re being penalized. Of course, it’s gambling, the X-iter is optional, and it can just as easily swing the other way, with free drops or Super Free Drops potentially turning out to be genuinely lucrative. While Cygnus 1 had 5,000x potential and Cygnus 2 pushed that to 50,000x, the non-jackpot cap in Cygnus 3 is 10,000x, which is respectable, but not exactly a figure that will generate huge buzz for this release.

What’s beyond doubt is that the €100,000 Cygnus Jackpot is heavily promoted and will likely be the most sought-after result when playing Cygnus 3. There are some mixed reactions to be had, but overall Cygnus 3 is a solid entry—one that can be harsh in certain scenarios and that seems best suited to players who enjoy chasing jackpots.
