Curse of the Mummies: Slot Overview
Curse of the Mummies is the third game in three months from Blue Guru Games, the Leo Ventures (LeoVegas) owned studio, and this time they’ve swapped the cosmic setting for something far more familiar. The premise doesn’t mess around – the mummies have risen to take revenge on the living, end of story. The feature set follows the same no-nonsense approach: in the base game, symbols can transform, while the bonus round can unleash hefty multipliers that help drive Curse of the Mummies toward its impressive max win.
With so many Egyptian themed slots already out there, it’s tough for any single title to grab attention. Curse of the Mummies tries by leaning into a darker, spookier take on the theme without going full horror. The unsettling mummy characters give it a bit of an edge, in a comparable (though less intense) way to Stakelogic’s thriller Gods of Death. It doesn’t descend into the underworld quite like Hacksaw Gaming’s Hand of Anubis, but there’s enough atmosphere and intrigue to keep you pushing on to see what’s next.
Curse of the Mummies runs on a 5×3 reel setup with a 243 ways to win system. Wins land when three or more matching symbols appear on consecutive reels starting from the leftmost reel. It’s a high volatile slot with two RTP configurations, where the preferred version comes in at 95.73%. The game is available across devices, and you can enter the tomb with stakes ranging from 25 p/c to $/€100 per spin.
A quick scan of the paytable shows classic Egyptian items as the lower-paying symbols, including ankhs, lotus flowers, scorpions, and cobras, while the top payouts come from four eerie mummy characters. The last symbol to note before the features is the golden scarab wild, which substitutes for any symbol apart from scatters.
Curse of the Mummies: Slot Features
If you’ve tried Blue Guru’s previous release, Octopus Armada, the core base-game mechanic in Curse of the Mummies will feel familiar. The feature is named Rise from the Crypt and it can activate on any spin. When it triggers, one random paying symbol is converted into either a scatter or a wild.
Rise From the Crypt Free Spins
Hitting a scatter symbol on all five reels grants 15 free spins. Every triggering scatter that appears builds a multiplier which applies to all wins throughout the bonus. Standard scatters add x1, x2, x3, x4, or x5 each, while super scatters contribute x10. These values are added together and then used for the entire free spins session. The feature can be retriggered by landing 5 scatter symbols to win +5 free spins. On a retrigger, each scatter increases the win multiplier by an extra x1, x2, x3, or x5.
Buy Bonus
When the bonus buy option is available, selecting it presents four choices:
- Option 1 costs 80x the bet and gets you are regular 5 scatter trigger.
- Option 2 costs 140x the bet and guarantees at least 1 super scatter.
- Option 3 costs 200x the bet and guarantees at least 3 super scatters.
- Option 4 costs 260x the bet and guarantees 3 super scatters.
Curse of the Mummies: Slot Verdict
After the quirky Day of the Tentacle/Cthulhu/end-of-humanity vibe of the previous title, it was a bit unexpected to see Blue Guru follow up with something so traditional. They’ve executed it well, and there’s nothing wrong with the theme or its fans, but it’s not exactly fresh territory for weaving an especially original narrative. Still, Blue Guru already showed their imagination in Octopus Armada, an inventive story about octopus overlords returning to earth to deliver cosmic justice for rampant consumerism, or something along those lines. By comparison, Curse of the Mummies was always going to find it harder to feel truly unique.
Beyond the more grounded storyline, Curse of the Mummies also carries over a few gameplay drawbacks. The base game feels fairly standard. The 243 ways setup is a positive, but the only real mechanic here is the transformation feature that turns regular symbols into wilds or scatters, which echoes what we saw in Octopus Armada. The free spins round, however, is where things can really ramp up thanks to some potentially tasty multipliers, and it’s less finicky than the bonus in The Nemean Lion. Since extra scatters increase the win multiplier during the feature, retriggers become twice as appealing, and it allows Curse of the Mummies to reach wins of up to 9,138x the bet. Seeing it actually hit that level would be something, too, as a huge payout could give the game—and Blue Guru’s reputation—a serious boost.
After being slightly underwhelmed by the feature set in Octopus Armada, we were hoping Blue Guru would go bigger on their next release. In some ways they have: the 243 ways format, strong visuals, and the chance of exciting multipliers make Curse of the Mummies a solid Egypt slot with more positives than negatives. That said, there’s still room to push further, and while free spins with a towering multiplier are hard to complain about, the overall simplicity stops it from reaching that blazing, ultra-creative peak. Curse of the Mummies is a slick Egyptian-themed entry that suggests Blue Guru is worth keeping an eye on, but they may need to dig a bit deeper to truly put rivals under pressure.
