Crystal Towers: Slot Overview

Evolution Gaming-owned Big Time Gaming has built a reputation for pushing slot boundaries, with its biggest headline being the creation of the hugely successful Megaways engine. Rather than living off that achievement, the studio has continued experimenting with Megaclusters, Megapays, Megaquads, plus plenty of concepts that don’t carry the Mega label. If their ideas are sparked by everyday objects, you could easily imagine the team at BTG HQ messing with a Rubik’s cube and a Jenga set before landing on Crystal Towers, a cluster pays slot that breaks away from flat, two-dimensional play and shifts into a three-dimensional setup—or at least a distinctive 3D-style perspective.

The playfield is the obvious standout. Instead of a fixed grid that simply spins in place, Crystal Towers uses a three-dimensional Tower that rotates as symbols drop downward, set high above the clouds or out in space on what appears to be a floating rock platform. To land a win, at least 5 matching symbols must connect horizontally or vertically, and winning clusters can even wrap around the Tower’s sides. Winning symbols are removed, the remaining symbols tumble down, and fresh ones fall in from above to refill the gaps. This chain reaction continues until no further wins are formed.

Bets range from 10 c to $/€20 per base game spin, and pressing spin sends the current stack of symbols dropping through a hole in the ground before a fresh four-sided Tower rises into view. Each face of the Tower is 5 columns across, while the height varies depending on the stage of play. With highly volatile math, the RTP is 96.36%, or 96.37% when purchasing the bonus round.

During the base game, the Tower stands five rows tall and contains 80 symbols. The 7 paying symbols are different coloured cubes, paying 0.1x to 0.5x for 5-6 OAK, rising to 3x to 5x the bet for 20+ OAK. Patterned cubes carry the higher payouts, which makes the premium symbols a bit easier to spot at a glance.

Crystal Towers: Slot Features

Three separate wild symbol types help form winning clusters. One of these wilds can also trigger the free spins bonus round, which is also available via a purchase option.

Wilds

Three types of wilds show up in the game – regular, multiplier, and trigger; each one substitutes for all paying symbols. Any win that includes multiplier wilds is multiplied by the value shown on every multiplier wild involved in that win. When a trigger wild takes part in a win, 10 free spins are granted. If more than one trigger wild is included in the same win, each one awards 10 free spins, while a single trigger wild contributing to multiple wins still only grants 10 free spins.

Free Spins

Free spins begin with a Tower that is 6 rows high and contains 96 symbols. On spins 3, 5, 7, and 9, an additional row is added to the Tower. The Tower can expand until it hits its 10-row high maximum, where it holds 160 symbols. From the second free spin onward, only the bottom one or two rows are removed at the start of each spin. Also from the second free spin, up to 10 wilds are placed into random positions on the Tower at the beginning of every spin. During the feature, whenever a trigger wild contributes to a win, +10 free spins are added.

Bonus Buy

Players can enter the free spins feature instantly by paying 60 times their stake.

Crystal Towers: Slot Verdict

Whatever conclusion you come to about Crystal Towers, it’s undeniably an unusual slot, with a faint resemblance to Hacksaw Gaming’s Cubes/Cubes 2. It also has the feel of a potential bridge toward what comes next. Not necessarily in the same way Megaways prompted other studios to queue up for a license, but it carries a futuristic edge. It’s easy to imagine Crystal Towers paired with something like Apple Vision Pro to deliver a true 3D experience. That could be a very cool direction—floating above the clouds like a balloon or a satellite, staring down at a massive Tower of symbols and giving it a smack to set it spinning. Where this concept could go is genuinely intriguing. For now, 3D-style slots may still be at an early stage, but every new idea has to begin somewhere.

Crystal Towers kicks off that shift with a respectable first step, yet it can also feel like a dressed-up cluster pays game. The supporting features didn’t come across as especially mind-blowing. Wilds and wild multipliers are certainly not drawbacks, but in some respects, Crystal Towers seems to miss an extra ingredient that could have made it truly standout from a pure cluster-paying slot standpoint. Another possible issue is the low cluster values. Yes, free spins flood the Tower with wild symbols, including wild multipliers, but it often felt like hard work to build meaningful returns. On the brighter side, the reacting, 3D, rotating flow is oddly satisfying and close to hypnotic, which is a strong plus for a cluster pays title.

Even with a bit of a grind during free spins, this is still a BTG release, so big payout outcomes could certainly be on the table, even though the official max win number wasn’t available for the review. Whether it pays out huge or not, Crystal Towers offers a genuinely different way to play, and it would be interesting to see Big Time Gaming revisit the Tower idea later with even more impactful side features.
