Coba Reborn: Slot Overview

Much like a snake charmer coaxing a serpent from its basket, ELK Studios has worked its own kind of magic to bring a familiar creature back. In other words, the jungle-dwelling, slithering star of Coba returns as Coba Reborn. The first game impressed with its distinctive snake symbol “eating” mechanic and striking presentation. With the Reborn edition, ELK Studios keeps most of the elements that made the original shine, then layers in a few floral additions (quite literally) and adjusts a handful of settings to deliver something that feels comfortably familiar, yet slightly refreshed.

Although the soundtrack is largely unchanged, it’s as if ELK Studios replaced the original’s golden tint with a cooler blue/grey palette for Coba Reborn. The overall look is darker and more brooding than before, but no less visually appealing. The exotic cultural vibe is still front and centre, though the setting feels like a damper, more shadowy corner of the world. The grid, framed by snake heads along the top and sides, sits deep in dense vegetation, with thick foliage and what appear to be ancient ruins behind it. It’s a recognizable setup in many respects, but the ELK Studios team makes it pop, clearly drawing on lessons not only from Coba, but also from titles like Pacific Gold and Voodoo Gold.

Beyond the cosmetic tweaks, ELK has also adjusted the mechanics. A key change is that volatility in Coba Reborn has been pushed up to high, whereas the previous game sat at medium. Another shift is the RTP, which has dropped to 94%. This return rate applies whether you’re wagering 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin in the standard game or using the bonus mode to purchase features via the X-iter menu. Played on a 7×7-sized gaming panel, Coba Reborn uses a cluster pays system, paying out whenever at least 5 identical symbols connect anywhere on the board.

Symbol payouts have also been trimmed, and in some cases quite noticeably. The low-paying symbols in Coba Reborn are a green turtle, blue lizard, and bronze monkey, while the higher-paying set includes a green gem, blues gem, red gem, and a gold mask. A 5 OAK cluster win pays 0.05 to 1 times the bet, while at the top end, a 15+ cluster awards 1.5 to 50 times the bet. When wilds land, they can substitute for any standard paying symbol.

Coba Reborn: Slot Features

Now for the snakes and the flowers—here’s how Coba Reborn’s features work. First up are winning symbols: whenever a win lands, those symbols are removed and new ones fall in from above to fill the gaps. The snake progress meter collects the winning symbols, and the Avalanche feature keeps repeating this process until no further wins are created.

Snake Progress Meter

Once the snake progress meter reaches half-filled, wild symbols are randomly placed onto the grid after the refill. When the meter becomes completely filled, snakes are released based on the level achieved. At levels 1, 2, or 3, 3 snakes emerge from random entry points along the sides of the grid. At level 4, 6 snakes are released from random entry points.

Snakes

A snake is a linear cluster of symbols that grows as the snake moves across the grid. Snakes are at least 5 symbols long and always contribute to a winning cluster or to a larger connected cluster. A snake with a yellow body will survive into the next avalanche, while a blue body indicates it may die. Snakes always begin in the yellow survival state, meaning they survive the first avalanche drop. The first symbol a snake travels over becomes the snake’s symbol, shown on its head. If that first symbol is an orchid, the snake becomes wild. Any symbols the snake passes over are transformed into its symbol, except for orchids or wilds.

If a snake moves over the same symbol type as itself, it grows in length and its body turns yellow—this also happens when snakes consume wild symbols. If, during its entire movement, a snake fails to move over (eat) its own symbol type, a wild, or an orchid, it dies and is removed from the grid before wins are evaluated. Snakes whose symbol is wild convert crossed symbols into wild symbols. These snakes must eat wilds, multiplier wilds, or orchids in order to grow and remain alive. Wild wins pay as the highest value symbol.

Whenever snakes intersect, a multiplier wild symbol is generated. These start at x2 and are doubled on each cross at the same position. If multiple multipliers are included in a single win, their values are multiplied together first. When a snake eats a wild multiplier, it grows and turns yellow. Finally, if a snake crosses itself or bites its tail without the ouroboros feature active, it dies and is removed from the reels.

Orchids

Coba Reborn features 4 different orchid symbols, and each one comes with its own effect:

  • Blood Orchid – when 2 of these symbols are in view, a snake spawns from each. Or, a blood orchid can drain another type of orchid in view and spawn a snake from its position. A former blood orchid position turns wild once the snake has moved. When a snake eats a blood orchid, a random number of snakes appear from random entry points on the sides of the grid.
  • Hydra Orchid – when a snake eats a hydra orchid, it spawns another snake behind its head with the same symbol type. If the eating snake has the rebirth or ouroboros feature, these are passed on to the new snake.
  • Rebirth Orchid – when a snake eats a rebirth orchid, it can be resurrected from the dead to the same length and keep the ouroboros feature if it had it. The rebirth feature persists across multiple avalanche drops.
  • Ouroboros Orchid – when a snake eats an ouroboros orchid, it can cross itself without dying. The crossing grows the snake which enters the survival state (yellow-bodied). The crossing position becomes a multiplier wild.

Snakes can carry both rebirth and ouroboros features, but if they already have them, they cannot consume another rebirth or ouroboros orchid.

X-iter

A familiar ELK Studios inclusion, the X-iter lets players approach Coba Reborn through a selection of different modes.

  • Boosted Chance – one drop for 2x the bet with more than double the chance of reaching the first level on the snake meter.
  • Flower Power – 10x the bet for one drop with at least 3 random orchids.
  • All Ouroboros – 25x the bet for a game round with double blood orchids. All snakes can cross themselves.
  • Bali Boost – 100x the bet for a game round guaranteed to reach level 1.
  • Coba – 500x the bet for a game round that starts on level 4 with 6 snakes awarded.

Coba Reborn: Slot Verdict

Reaching a firm verdict on Coba Reborn took a little while. Part of the reason it didn’t immediately impress is that, in several ways, it stays close to the original—and sequels often find it difficult to escape the shadow of what came first, whether that’s in slots, books, films, or any other creative field. It simply didn’t deliver the same “brand-new” surprise factor. After that initial feeling came the sense that with Coba Reborn, ELK Studios gives with one hand and takes with the other. The additions are clear, such as the orchid-driven features and the higher volatility—changes some players will welcome (and others won’t)—so in that sense, the gameplay has been reworked, or “reborn,” depending on how you look at it.

At the same time, ELK has reduced the RTP, which is rarely a crowd-pleaser, and has also cut back symbol payouts, heavily reducing the value of the bigger clusters. So while the new features try hard to elevate the Coba Reborn experience, the nerfs are also present, keeping things from becoming too over-the-top. From a practical, “what you see on screen” perspective, this balancing can result in long sequences of events that sometimes produce surprisingly modest returns. That said, Coba Reborn still has the firepower to land substantial wins—especially when the snakes are weaving around the grid with orchid support, and those flowers are undeniably striking. The game retains the same 25,000x the bet maximum win as before, which would be a wild moment to witness with this style of mechanic.

Even so, it was difficult to label Coba Reborn as a clear upgrade over the original. At its strongest, it feels roughly on par with Coba, perhaps a touch more intricate, though once you factor in the RTP reduction, some players may view it as a step down. Still, the orchids and their unique effects became more engaging as the review went on, since they add a fresh angle to how the action in Coba Reborn plays out. By the end, the overall impression was positive enough to recommend Coba Reborn to anyone who enjoyed the slithering chaos of the original Coba slot—albeit with a couple of caveats.
