CherryPop: Overview
CherryPop is a fruit-themed slot and the third release from independent developer AvatarUX to feature their expansive PopWins mechanic. The first two entries, PopRocks and WildPops, leaned heavily into an Eastern vibe, ranging from noir-inspired to overtly Asian styling. This third outing swings back to classic casino heritage with a traditional fruity setup. Expect lots of familiar old-school icons on a grid that can grow dramatically, alongside free spins and, as with the earlier games, serious upside.

Visually, CherryPop is easily the most mass-market looking of the series so far. The game sits inside a hot pink, glowing frame, and the layout is 5 reels by 3 rows in its default state, though it can stretch wildly once the features start firing. Behind the reels is a purple-blue-pink background rendered in the soft, blurred style Avatar UX often uses. It’s fairly straightforward, but also nicely uncluttered. The audio rounds things off: no Zoot Suit Riot sadly, but understated 80s-style electronica that keeps the mood upbeat.
You can play from 20 p/c to $/€40 per spin, and the headline stats are strong. The RTP isn’t exceptional, but it’s comfortably above average at 96.2%. Gameplay also feels reasonably lively, helped by wins landing roughly once every five spins (an official hit rate of 22%). That said, don’t count on frequent big base-game hits when they do arrive. PopWins titles are known for being highly volatile, and CherryPop definitely follows that pattern.
The core rule is simple: payouts trigger with three or more adjacent matching symbols starting from the first or fifth reel. In default mode there are 243 ways to win, but effectively this becomes 486 because the slot pays both ways. Some studios would stop there for a fruit slot, but Avatar UX rarely keeps things that basic.
Before diving into what CherryPop can do when it really gets moving, here’s a quick rundown of the paytable. There are 13 paying symbols in total, which can make the screen feel busy in smaller reel setups. At the low end you’ll find 10-A royals, then grapes, melons, oranges, horseshoes, clovers, bells, diamonds, and cherries. The non-royal symbols pay up to 15x the stake for five cherries. Note that cherries only show up via pops or during free spins.
CherryPop: Features
From a still image it can pass as a fairly standard, glossy fruit slot, but the feature set makes it anything but typical. As with the earlier games, PopWins is the main attraction, backed up by free spins and a bonus buy option.
Any win activates the PopWins feature. When this happens, the winning symbols are removed, and every empty space is filled by two new symbols. Because more symbols are added than were there originally, the reels expand to fit them – up to 6 rows high in the base game. Those fresh symbols can create additional wins, and the cycle repeats until no further winners appear, after which the reels reset.
Expanding all 5 reels to 6 rows triggers 5 free spins. Before the bonus begins, you can choose to risk those spins on the Gamble Wheel. If you win, you can receive up to 16 free spins; if you lose, you forfeit them and return to the base game with nothing.
During free spins, the stakes rise thanks to a progressive win multiplier that starts at x2. Each PopWin increases the multiplier by +1, with no cap. PopWins still expand the reels as in the base game, but now the reels can grow to 9 rows high.
Once all reels reach 9 rows, the win multiplier receives a +3 boost. From that point onward, each additional PopWin increases the multiplier by +4 instead of +1. With a full 9-row grid, there are 59,049 ways to win in play – doubled again because the game pays both ways. If a spin lands without a PopWin, the reels drop back to the height of the shortest reel rather than fully resetting.
Lastly, there’s a new addition: a bonus buy. Paying 75x your stake grants immediate entry to the bonus.
CherryPop: Verdict
Among the three PopWins slots released to date, CherryPop ends up feeling like the middle ground. The first game was extremely volatile, often doing very little or suddenly exploding into huge, extended win chains, and it also carries the biggest potential. The second, WildPops, is gentler thanks to random wilds that help keep things ticking over, though that comes with reduced potential.
So where does that leave CherryPop? It’s less punishing than the first, but harsher than the second. You’ll likely miss WildPops’ random wild support, and CherryPop’s base game can start to feel repetitive if free spins are slow to arrive. The theme is also fairly generic, even if the overall presentation is polished for a fruit slot. One element that may make CherryPop more attractive is the buy feature, letting you skip the grind of chasing the bonus in the base game.
Ultimately, whether CherryPop clicks for you depends on how you feel about the PopWins mechanic. Dry spells in the base game can drag since there aren’t other modifiers to shake things up. But when it starts chaining, it can really snowball, and the potential for long, drawn-out sequences is impressive. The expanding reels remain entertaining, and the pay-both-ways setup only increases the chaos. If you manage to get CherryPop fully rolling, wins of up to 20,000 times the stake are on the table.
If nothing else, AvatarUX proves there’s still room to innovate within the classic/fruit slot space. Anyone looking for this traditional style with a distinctive mechanic and strong overall stats should consider giving CherryPop a try. In many ways it’s compellingly straightforward, which makes it easy to spin again—or to hit the bonus buy button one more time.
PopWins remains a fascinating mechanic with plenty of potential, and CherryPop feels like the most mainstream and approachable version so far. Even so, while it’s enjoyable to play, it doesn’t quite come across as Avatar UX’s definitive breakthrough with the mechanic yet.
