Charlie Chance in Hell to Pay: Overview
Swedish workaholics Play’n GO step slightly off the beaten path with Charlie Chance in Hell to Pay. As the name implies, the action drops you below ground into a gloomy underworld. Anyone who’s a bit squeamish can relax, though—the tone leans far more toward slapstick than scary, thanks to the developer’s friendly cartoon presentation. In terms of gameplay, it sticks to the classics: a 3 reel, 5-payline fruit-style setup packed with familiar old-school symbols.
Play’n GO has loosely modelled the theme around the fictional detective Charlie Chan, a character featured across numerous novels, TV, and films. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, that’s understandable—the books date all the way back to the 1920s. They were evidently popular at the time, although why Play’n GO decided to resurrect the character (or the era) is anyone’s guess. Still, it works, because the game’s look is genuinely distinctive, especially with the whole thing staged in hades.
Visually, Play’n GO presents Charlie Chance like a vintage cartoon—so vintage it looks like it predates colour animation. Even with the background rendered in blacks, whites, and greys, it feels more welcoming than you’d expect. The style recalls that eerie old Disney skeleton short where the bones play each other like xylophones. Charlie stands on the left looking alarmed, while a horned, Betty Boop-esque figure clutching a trident hovers on the right.
At the centre sits the 3×3 reel grid with 5 fixed paylines. This is where the colour really pops, as the bright symbols stand out sharply against the monochrome backdrop. Symbol-wise, it’s mostly fruit, with extra hellish touches like flames and chains sprinkled in. Lower payouts come from cherries, lemons, a sliced apple, and a bunch of grapes. Higher payouts include a BAR, triple sixes, and hell’s bells as the top-value symbol. Only three-of-a-kind wins are available, paying anywhere from 0.4x to 4 times your stake.
And don’t forget to pay the boatman when you cross the river Styx—which is a roundabout way of talking about staking. On the low end, spins start at 10 p/c, while high rollers can push it up to $/€100 per spin. Somewhat surprisingly given the theme, volatility is medium at 6/10, which takes a little sting out of the ride—though there’s still solid potential here, as you’ll see. RTP can differ by market, so it’s worth checking the rules before you dive in. The version you want is 96.23% RTP, which is both the default and the highest available. As always, it pays to confirm.
Charlie Chance in Hell to Pay: Features

Wilds play a key role in Charlie Chance, and you’ll encounter 3 types in total. First is the standard wild, which substitutes for any regular paying symbol to help complete a winning line. This wild can also appear as an x2 or an x3 wild multiplier, boosting any win it contributes to. Better still, if multiple multipliers land together, they multiply with each other rather than simply adding up. That means 3x3x3 becomes x27 overall, not x9.
After that comes the flaming, horned femme icon, which acts as the scatter and can land anywhere. Hitting 3 of these on the screen activates the Feature Board, giving you a shot at unlocking a selection of rewards:
- An instant cash prize.
- A respin with random wilds added to the reels.
- A respin with a random multiplier of x2, x3, or x25.
- A win spin which guarantees a pay out.
- Win a round of free spins.
Triggering the free spins feature awards 8 spins. While this mode is running, every set of three scatters you collect earns another visit to the Feature Board. Just like in the base game, the Feature Board can award the same mix of respins, cash prizes, wilds, multipliers, win spins, or additional free spins.
Charlie Chance in Hell to Pay: Verdict
Even with its throwback format, Charlie Chance in Hell to Pay feels surprisingly fresh. That’s largely down to the oddball setting and the wonderfully random cast that inhabits it. It’s definitely a welcome change of scenery, even if the destination is the underworld and the risk is getting toasted. The more you look at it, the weirder the story seems—poor Charlie appears to be suffering for something he did to the horned lady. Whatever was it?
We’ll probably never get the answer, which is a shame, so it’s best to focus on what’s on the reels. For straightforward fruit-slot fun, Play’n GO has done a solid job making this one appealing. The action is quick and easy to follow, with the Feature Board adding a layer of variety through its different prize outcomes.
The wild multipliers can be especially exciting, since three of them can theoretically push a win to x27. And the top-end potential—up to 6,666 times the stake—is impressively high, even by Play’n GO standards.
That said, it’s difficult to imagine getting anywhere near that ceiling. In testing, it didn’t feel realistic to even land half of it. Everything hinges on the multipliers, and you’ll likely need a respin featuring the 25x multiplier paired with plenty of wilds or premium symbols to generate meaningful returns. Most of the time, though, wins felt underwhelming and the math model fairly punishing. All in all, Charlie Chance is a likeable slot with an original concept, but it plays a little too tight for our taste.
Don’t Miss
Play’n GO later launched a sequel called Charlie Chance XreelZ. Instead of the original’s 3-reel layout, it runs on 5-reels and uses Play’n GO’s trademarked mechanic known as XreelZ.
