Buffalo Hunter: Overview
Developer Nolimit City returns to familiar territory – the Western United States. But Buffalo Hunter isn’t about gunfights and outlaws. Instead, it drops you onto the open plains, home to one of the most revered Native American animals: the powerful buffalo. Nolimit City leans into a more naturalistic presentation here, though the calmer vibe shouldn’t fool anyone. Buffalo Hunter is a highly volatile title that can truly explode once its free spin features kick in.
Nolimit City sets its 5-reel, 40-payline layout on a wide prairie, giving players a low-to-the-ground perspective of the landscape. It feels like you’re down in the grass, staring up past swaying blades toward hazy mountains on the horizon. Clouds drift quickly across a muted purple sky while wildlife calls echo in the background. To bring in a sense of regional flavor, pipes and drums thump along, picking up speed at key moments. With so many slots using this setting, Nolimit City earns credit for framing it in a comparatively distinctive way.
High volatility was mentioned up front, but even that may not fully capture it. On startup, the game makes it clear Buffalo Hunter is ‘Extremely Volatile’, fitting into the special category Nolimit City has created for its own releases. RTP is more conventional, and in a good way, with a default of 96.01%, increasing to 96.34% when the bonus buy option is used, or 96.41% for the Stampede Super Bonus feature.
With stakes ranging from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin, Buffalo Hunter uses ten standard pay symbols – five low and five high. The low pays are 10 to A royals decorated with feathers, paying 3.75 to 5 times the stake for five of a kind. The premium symbols are animals like pronghorns, wolves, cougars, eagles, and buffalo. Hit five on a line from this set and the payout ranges from 6.25 to 50 times the stake.
Dream catchers aren’t only for decoration, as they appear as the wild in Buffalo Hunter. This handy symbol carries the same value as the buffalo and substitutes for any pay symbol to help complete winning combinations.
Buffalo Hunter: Features

Buffalo Hunter’s base game is fine and does its job, but once free spins arrive it feels like the game suddenly comes alive. Alongside free spins, mystery symbols are included to add another layer of interest. The Mystery symbols feature works in the usual way: they can appear anywhere and then all reveal into the same matching pay symbol.
The amount of scatter symbols determines which bonus round becomes available – landing 3 or 4 scatters awards 8 or 10 free spins in the Buffalo Horde, or Prairie Multiplier feature – and players pick the one they prefer. If 5 scatters land, players unlock the top-tier free spins mode, the Stampede Super Bonus.
- In Buffalo Horde free spins, which is the less volatile of the two choices but still highly volatile, certain buffalo symbols appear with glowing frames. When these framed symbols land, they charge meters beside the high pay animal symbols. Once a meter is filled, every instance of that animal turns into buffalos for the rest of the bonus. Two extra free spins are also awarded.
- Prairie Multiplier free spins follow similar rules, but instead of converting symbols, animal symbols receive multipliers. As additional animal meters are completed, the multipliers rise by +1, reaching up to x5 at the most. This selection is also more volatile and comes with greater potential.
The feature most players are chasing is the Stampede Super Bonus. It merges the mechanics of the two bonus rounds above. That means when an animal meter is completed, the symbol converts into a buffalo and also gains a multiplier. Symbols can land stacked throughout all stages of play. Even better, the Stampede Super Bonus offers the strongest opportunity to cover the reels in x5 buffalos, worth a tidy 10,000x on a single spin.
Depending on location, players may be able to trigger the Nolimit Bonus. Paying 100 times the stake guarantees at least 3 scatters on the next spin, letting players choose between Buffalo Horde or Prairie Multiplier free spins. For those willing to go bigger, players can pay 600 times the stake to ensure at least 5 scatters on the next spin and activate the Stampede Super Bonus.
Buffalo Hunter: Verdict
With Buffalo Hunter, Nolimit City has produced another solid, playable slot with plenty going for it. The American wildlife theme is handled in a slightly different style, and the bonus game can be a real blast. That said, the base game can feel a bit routine, and the 40 payline, 5×4 format won’t suit everyone. As a result, the experience is heavily – almost entirely – centered on the bonus game, which can strongly shape how a session turns out.
The free spins mechanics aren’t wildly innovative either. The collection/ symbol upgrade idea is straight from the Pink Elephants playbook, and visually it takes cues from Novomatic’s classic Indian Spirit slot. Still, it isn’t a direct clone. Nolimit City has expanded the concept, added extra elements, and pushed it into something that feels more individual. Combining symbol transformations with multipliers is a great move as well. It definitely makes free spins volatile. Some bonus rounds were underwhelming; others delivered huge results. More spins naturally helps, and getting upgrades early can completely change the outcome.
It’s easy to see why some players might bypass the base game using the Nolimit Bonus. There’s also a bit of debate around it. As with Deadwood, the price of buying the top feature is likely to raise eyebrows – 600x for 12 spins? It’s a difficult call because the game can absolutely erupt, and 10,000x on a single spin is nothing to dismiss. On the other hand, it can just as easily fizzle out, which happened more than once during testing. It’s tense stuff.
Buffalo Hunter may not have the same standout character as the studio’s flagship releases, and there’s a slight ‘been there, done that’ feeling around the edges, but taken as a whole it’s another enjoyable Nolimit City slot that can deliver extreme highs – and isn’t that the point?
