BountyPop: Slot Overview

Yggdrasil Gaming and Avatar UX clearly know when they’ve struck gold. Their PopWins line hits its fourth entry with the launch of BountyPop, and the series continues to gather momentum. The combination of the PopWins mechanic, snowball-style action, and serious upside seems to be resonating with an increasing number of players. While the previous release, CherryPop, nudged the brand closer to the mainstream with its fruit theme, BountyPop looks back to Avatar UX’s Asian roots for its inspiration.

Initially, it may not be obvious why PopWins gets so much attention. When you load the game, you’re greeted by a straightforward 5-reel, 3-row layout set in front of a Northern Lights-like backdrop, with a fantasy-leaning soundtrack floating along behind it. It does the job, but it feels fairly understated compared to some of Avatar UX’s earlier work.

With stakes ranging from 20 p/c to $/€20 per spin, and in line with the rest of the series, you should expect a highly volatile ride that can swing from dead spins to long chains of pops with major potential. When chasing the top prizes, wins land on average 1 in every 5 spins, and the RTP rating of 96% sits right around the norm. The slot runs on a win-all-ways, pay-both-ways setup, so combinations can pay left to right and right to left. In practice, that doubles the 243 win ways available in the standard 5×3 state. As PopWins expands the reels (details below), the ways increase too, reaching a ceiling of 59,049.

The paytable starts with four neon-style card royals (J-A) written in a flowing Gothic font, then moves into a cast of cartoon-like characters. There are seven character symbols making up the higher-paying group, topped by a mysterious white-masked figure as the sole super high symbol – landing five of him on a payline returns 10x the stake. There are no wilds at all, including the pop wilds seen in earlier PopWins titles. Oddly enough, leaving them out doesn’t really change the overall feel of how the game plays.

BountyPop: Slot Features

BountyPop – free spins wheel

Unsurprisingly, the PopWins mechanic takes centre stage, and everything else is designed around it. In BountyPop, the additional features are free spins and Mystery Wheel Multipliers.

Whenever a winning combo hits, each winning symbol pops and is replaced by two new symbols. This makes the relevant reels taller and increases the number of ways to win. In the base game, reels can grow to a maximum of 6 positions high. Once the win chain ends, the reels return to their standard size.

When all reels reach 6 rows high in the base game at the end of a win sequence, the Mystery Wheel feature activates. The wheel’s outer ring contains x2-x3, or x5 multipliers along with arrows. Hitting an arrow triggers a spin of the inner wheel, which can award multipliers of x3-x5, or x10. The multiplier is then applied once to the current win.

Hitting 3 or more scatter symbols anywhere on the screen triggers the bonus game. More precisely, 3, 4, or 5 scatters award 6, 9, or 12 free spins respectively. During the bonus, reels can expand up to 9 rows high, creating as many as 59,049 ways to win. Expanded rows do not reset back to the base level between free spins, but instead fall to the lowest reel height.

If all 5 reels reach 7 rows or higher, a multiplier wheel becomes available. This wheel spins after free spins end and applies a multiplier to the total win for the round:

  • Bronze wheel (all reels 7 symbols tall): outer ring has Arrow, x2-3, x5. Inner ring has x3-5, x10.
  • Silver wheel (all reels 8 symbols tall): outer ring has Arrow, x2-5, x7. Inner ring has x3-5, x7, x10.
  • Gold wheel (all reels 9 symbols tall): outer ring has Arrow, x3-5, x7, x10. Inner ring has x3-5, x7, x10, x100.

For reference, free spins are triggered on average once every 300 spins. Where the option exists, players can skip the grind by using the bonus buy, which costs 100 times the bet. Before the bonus begins, players can choose to spin a wheel that may award extra free spins or wipe them out entirely.

BountyPop: Slot Verdict

With four titles now in the PopWins collection, most players will know the core loop: pop winning symbols, expand the reels, and chase multipliers. Up to this point, each PopWins game has relied on these same building blocks, while tweaking the supporting features around them. BountyPop follows that pattern, without introducing anything especially unusual that would alienate fans or convert players who aren’t already sold on the mechanic.

After the polished look of CherryPop, the sequel feels like it should have pushed a bit further. Instead, BountyPop comes across as less refined, as though the creative effort isn’t quite on par with earlier entries. It doesn’t really bring much that feels fresh. Extending pop streaks to unlock bigger reels is still enjoyable, but the effect is less impactful the fourth time around. PopWins remains a smart idea, though keeping it exciting means pairing it with stronger themes and increasingly compelling features.

BountyPop doesn’t quite deliver on that front. The theme lacks pull, and the gameplay often comes down to reaching maximum rows to secure a multiplier – satisfying when it lands, but it can feel more repetitive than before. The bonus buy is arguably more appealing than ever, particularly since free spins take around 300 spins on average to trigger naturally. The free spins round can be a wild ride where everything scales up – reel height, win ways, and multipliers. This is where the game’s huge potential of 55,000 times the bet can realistically come into play. It’s an enormous figure, even if nothing has yet beaten the 70,000x potential in the original PopRocks.

The previous three PopWins releases felt like they were building toward something, or at least they made sense commercially. BountyPop, by comparison, is neither as broadly appealing as CherryPop nor a clear step forward for the series. In the end, BountyPop is likely best suited to dedicated PopWins fans, but it may not be the ideal starting point if you’re new to the mechanic.
