One of the first surprises with Book of Toro is that it seems to be ELK’s first crack at a ‘book’ slot. The studio has managed just fine without any Ra-themed detours until now. Still, most developers eventually give in, and the urge to put a personal spin on the genre clearly won out. “Personal” fits Book of Toro well, because it pulls off plenty you won’t see in other titles. Just as impressive is how Book of Toro stays firmly tied to two different styles, and it’s hard to imagine ELK blending Wild Toro with ‘book of’ gameplay more effectively.

The best place is the upside: when free spins get rolling in your favour, they can feel almost impossible to stop. Add in respins, retriggers, multiple expanding-symbol evaluations, plus Toro Goes Wild, and bonus rounds can extend, stretch out, and keep going for a long time. Sticky expansion symbols are a brilliant touch, and it’s notable how ELK has layered so many moving parts while keeping the whole machine running. Wild Toro’s character comes through the ‘book of’ framework constantly, and the way the two formats are fused is excellent.

ELK also has a knack for unleashing bursts of pure reel chaos. If you want the most direct route to that full roller-coaster experience, buying the Super Bonus is likely the way to go. After focusing on the best bits, don’t assume Book of Toro is a guaranteed money printer. ELK also knows how to rein things in, and not every bonus round is a showstopper.
