Book of Toro: Slot Overview

If you haven’t heard, ELK Studio is marking the fifth anniversary of their breakout hit Wild Toro with a three-stop world tour. Each stop brings a fresh Wild Toro-inspired release, and Book of Toro is second in the lineup. The opener was Wild Toro 2, which kept the characters, mechanics, and features people loved, then expanded them in a big way. On the subject of expanding, the tour’s second slot, Book of Toro, leans into the signature expanding symbols that fans of this style are always looking for. That said, this isn’t just a straightforward matador-flavoured ‘book of’ game. ELK has seriously reworked the template, packing in plenty of Toro DNA to create a genuinely distinctive take on the genre.

You may not feel that immediately, as the setting is a familiar Egyptian backdrop with sarcophagi and pillars covered in hieroglyphs. The 10 numbered paylines are even shown down the sides of the 5-reel grid. It reads more like a nod to the classics, though, because everything else feels thoroughly modern. A special shout-out goes to ELK’s audio team, who once again deliver a rich, polished soundscape. The soundtrack has an Egyptian flavour, but not a quiet Nile-side sketching-pyramids mood—more like something you’d blast with the top down while rolling through modern Cairo.

Book of Toro runs smoothly across devices and supports stakes from 20 p/c to $/€100 per spin. As you’d expect, volatility is high, though not maxed out, coming in at 7 out of 10. The RTP isn’t top-tier either at 95%, but the upside is the game uses a single universal RTP, so there are no surprises. Base-game wins land when at least two high symbols or three low symbols connect from the leftmost reel, with a frequency of 23% – sadly, there’s no stated bonus frequency.

Most symbols are classic Egyptian fare, though ELK adds its own touches. From low to high you’ll see 10-A royals, scarabs, bird-decorated jewellery, Eyes of Horus, and the matador as the top-value icon. Curiously, the matador shows up far less in Book of Toro than in earlier titles. With so many mechanics in play, the paytable is toned down compared to the norm, with five premium symbols paying 20 to 250 times the stake. Even so, the game’s overall upside doesn’t feel diminished. Three wilds appear in different ways – a wild book scatter, a walking wild and a regular wild. Each can replace any paying symbol to help form wins.

Book of Toro: Slot Features

There’s a lot packed into Book of Toro. Alongside free spins with expanding symbols, you also get Toro Goes Wild, Mummy Respins, and five X-iter bonus buy options, where available.

Toro Goes Wild

Toro the bull acts as a walking wild and only shows up on the last reel. When Toro lands, he moves one reel to the left until he exits the grid, awarding a respin for every step. If a Mummy Symbol lands while Toro is visible, the Toro Goes Wild feature activates. In this mode, Toro travels vertically and then horizontally, smashing all mummy symbols off the reels and leaving a trail of regular wild symbols behind. As an extra detail, book symbols are sticky during Toro Goes Wild.

Mummy Respins

Hitting 2 or more mummy symbols on the screen triggers Mummy Respins. The mummy symbols lock into position for the next respin, and any additional mummy symbols that land also lock and grant more respins. If Toro hits, the Toro Goes Wild feature starts right away.

Free Spins

The book symbol functions as a wild, and it’s also the scatter. Landing 3, 4, or 5 books awards 10, 15, or 20 free spins. When free spins begin, a pay symbol is randomly chosen for expansion. If they can make a win, expanding symbols grow to cover all positions on their reels after any regular wins have been paid. Expanded symbols pay all lines and don’t need to sit next to each other. If at least 3 books land during the feature, free spins are retriggered, and an additional symbol is chosen to become an expanding symbol. You can have up to 3 expanding symbols active at the same time.

Adding a twist, Toro substitutes for expanding symbols when he’s on the reels. Also, if Toro covers an expanding symbol while walking, it can still expand when wins are evaluated. Note that Mummy Respins and Toro Goes Wild can also trigger during free spins.

X-iter

Players can choose Book of Toro in regular mode or bonus mode. X-iter is the bonus mode and includes 5 options:

  • Mummy Respins (5x the bet) – a single spin with a guaranteed Mummy Respin.
  • Toro (25x the bet) – one spin with a guaranteed Toro. Any book symbols that land on respins become sticky.
  • Mini bonus (50x the bet) – 3 spins with a randomly selected expansion symbol.
  • Bonus (100x the bet) – access to the standard free spins feature.
  • Super bonus (500x the bet) – awards the bonus game, plus all book symbols are sticky. Also, expanding symbols stay sticky as long as one extra expansion symbol lands or until expansion symbols appear on all five reels.

Book of Toro: Slot Verdict

One of the first surprises with Book of Toro is that it seems to be ELK’s first crack at a ‘book’ slot. The studio has managed just fine without any Ra-themed detours until now. Still, most developers eventually give in, and the urge to put a personal spin on the genre clearly won out. “Personal” fits Book of Toro well, because it pulls off plenty you won’t see in other titles. Cramming in so many features—each capable of detonating the reels at any moment—feels like a mathematical balancing act worth respecting. Just as impressive is how Book of Toro stays firmly tied to two different styles, and it’s hard to imagine ELK blending Wild Toro with ‘book of’ gameplay more effectively.

As for the features, it’s difficult to know where to start because there’s so much happening. The best place is the upside: when free spins get rolling in your favour, they can feel almost impossible to stop. Add in respins, retriggers, multiple expanding-symbol evaluations, plus Toro Goes Wild, and bonus rounds can extend, stretch out, and keep going for a long time. Sticky expansion symbols are a brilliant touch, and it’s notable how ELK has layered so many moving parts while keeping the whole machine running. Wild Toro’s character comes through the ‘book of’ framework constantly, and the way the two formats are fused is excellent.

ELK also has a knack for unleashing bursts of pure reel chaos. Nitropolis or Nitropolis 2 show this perfectly, and you can feel a similar energy in Book of Toro when everything clicks and the game starts throwing the kitchen sink at you. If you want the most direct route to that full roller-coaster experience, buying the Super Bonus is likely the way to go. It’s pricey, but one consequence of all that madness is that the win potential is double the usual figure at 10,000x the bet.

After focusing on the best bits, don’t assume Book of Toro is a guaranteed money printer. ELK also knows how to rein things in, and not every bonus round is a showstopper. The RTP may also be a sticking point for some. Putting that aside, anyone who enjoys Wild Toro and ‘book of’ style slots should make time to spin Book of Toro. It delivers what you’d expect from Toro colliding with ‘book’ gameplay, and then adds plenty more on top.
