Book of Shadows: Overview

Developer Nolimit City leans into the literary side with their occult-tinged slot Book of Shadows. There’s an unspoken, gentleman’s-agreement vibe that every studio needs at least one “Book of” title in its portfolio. This is Nolimit’s first attempt, and they’ve poured their trademark creativity into it. The essential expanding symbols are present, but beyond that, the game sends a chilly, rotten breath of undead air through the familiar formula.

One look makes it clear this isn’t a typical ‘Book of’ slot. Rather than sun-baked Ancient Egypt, the setting is far colder and far damper. If we had to pin it down, the 5-reel playfield feels like it’s tucked into the woods outside Sleepy Hollow. A haunting, almost Arabic, soundtrack drifts through like the fireflies crossing the screen, broken up by wolf howls and owl hoots. It genuinely feels like a headless horseman could burst between the bare trees at any second.

Book of Shadows – free spins

Book of Shadows runs smoothly on any device with stakes from 10 p/c to $/€100 per spin. That pricing applies at the default 3 row setting. By clicking the grid, players can switch on 4 or even 5 rows, which raises the wager by 1.5x or 2x respectively. RTP also changes with the row count, so playing 3, 4, or 5 rows delivers 96.01%, 96.07%, or 96.19% in that order. No matter the setup, volatility stays fixed at 10/10, which Nolimit labels as ‘Extreme’.

The base rules are familiar. Hit matching symbols left to right starting from reel one to score a win. Naturally, extra rows create more paylines, meaning 3, 4, or 5 rows gives 10, 15 or 20 Shadow Rows, as they’re known. The paytable contains ten standard symbols, beginning with 10-A royals, then an eyeball, a butterfly, a goat’s skull, a purple cat, and a female goth. Lower symbols require at least three of a kind to pay, while the premiums pay out when two or more connect. Premium rewards also feel nicely chunky when five of a kind lands, returning between 50x and 500x the stake. As with most ‘Book of’ slots, the scatter also functions as a wild symbol here.

Book of Shadows: Features

Free spins with expandable symbols are still the main attraction, though there are a few added mechanics too: Lucky Locks, Gamble 50/50, and the Gamble Wheel of Bonus.

Starting with Lucky Locks. Much like Microgaming’s Hyperspins feature, this lets you hold reels in place in exchange for a modified bet. Offered after every base game spin, you can lock up to 4 reels. The price varies depending on which reel you lock, what symbols are showing, and other factors. If you want, you can even lock two scatters and spin the remaining reels, aiming to land the third.

No ‘Book of’ slot feels complete without a way to risk your winnings. The 50/50 gamble feature appears after free spins or base game wins. You simply choose a black or red card to either double your payout or lose it. You can gamble up to five times consecutively, provided the win amount is under €500,000.

The Wheel of Bonus gives you another gamble route, this time for a shot at free spins – as long as the winnings do not exceed 60x the bet. A wheel spins with a highlighted slice, and the slice size is determined by how big your win is. Stop in the highlighted area to collect 10 free spins at the current row height.

Ultimately, everything points back to the free spins round, which activates when 3 or more book symbols land in view – 3 scatters grant 10 free spins at the current row height, though you can raise or lower the row count to gain more or fewer free spins.

Before the feature begins, one golden symbol is selected at random. If you don’t like what you’re given, you can reshuffle once in hopes of getting something better. It can backfire and go the other direction too, so choose carefully.

In free spins, golden symbols expand to fill entire reels after any win lines have been calculated. Expanded golden symbols pay across all win lines from any position; they don’t need to sit next to each other. The top outcome is five goth girls on a 5 row grid for a 10,000 times the stake win. Plus, hitting 3 or more book scatters during free spins retriggers the feature.

The bonus round is theoretically triggered once every 154 spins, but if you’d rather skip the wait, there’s a feature buy. Where permitted, the Nolimit Bonus costs 60x, 90x, or 120x for 10 free spins with 3, 4 or 5 rows respectively.

Book of Shadows: Verdict

When most studios build their own Book-style game, they usually adjust one element to justify another entry in the genre. Nolimit City has gone further, boldly flipping the popular template on its head. Beyond the expanding symbols (which, to be fair, are the heart of the concept), almost everything has been reworked. The end result is a ‘Book of’ slot that actually feels fresh. That kind of daring won’t suit everyone. Some players will find it fiddly, overstuffed, and potentially irritating. It’s definitely not a standard Ra-like clone.

Instead, it comes across as a proper gambler’s tool. Reel locking, for instance, is a blast when it breaks your way—like freezing two books and then landing the third to trigger free spins. But Lucky Locks aren’t inexpensive. As an example, locking a book on the first and third reel pushes spin costs to more than 40x the stake. Plenty of players will argue you’re better off simply paying for the feature.

The same question pops up with the Gamble options. Picking the correct card or landing free spins feels fantastic when it hits, and like taking a flaming pumpkin to the head when it doesn’t. Shadow Reels create a similar tension. It’s tough to stay on three rows when you know five are available—especially after watching loads of scatters appear on inactive rows. Some will say Nolimit should have just committed to a 5×5 layout and left it at that. Still, the entire experience is built around player choice.

Book of Shadows can definitely grow on you the further you explore it. There’s a lot happening, with plenty of settings to test. You may discover a setup you really enjoy, or you may feel all the tinkering just gets in the way. It’s the kind of game that could seriously annoy Ra purists, while others will appreciate the extra chances to push their luck, along with the offbeat theme.

Book of Shadows is smartly put together, offering loads of room for players who like to dig in, take a punt, or experiment with configurations. Once again, Nolimit has shown its creative streak by making something distinctive out of one of the most overused slot frameworks around.
