Boo: Slot Overview

Aussie slot developer Big Time Gaming has previously released cloned-reel titles like The Final Countdown and cloned-symbol games such as Book of Gods, but the studio isn’t generally known for churning out endless lookalikes. Still, with pumpkin season rolling around, it has delivered a spooky, Halloween-tinged, ghost-themed spin on its balloon-focused slot Pop. The game is called Boo, and it sticks to the familiar 4×4 template seen in Donuts, Chocolates, and, naturally, Pop.

Boo is set in a foggy graveyard at night. Glowing carved pumpkins are dotted across the ground, while a heavy, ominous vibe hangs over the screen like a slightly-too-tight turtleneck. Ghosts float around too—on the grid, anyway—but they’re more of the friendly Casper type than truly terrifying spirits out to scare the life out of anyone.

While Boo looks like a compact little slot, both its stats and its gameplay say otherwise. To begin with, the math model is highly volatile—in fact, Big Time Gaming labels it “very high” on the info sheet—yet the RTP stays at a solid 96.54%. That RTP applies across the board when staking 10 c to $/€10 per spin, and it also applies when using the bonus purchase. And yes, free spins can be bought here, with two options available—one of which is notably expensive for a Big Time Gaming slot.

Across Boo’s 4×4 gaming grid are 256 ways to win. Wins must start from the leftmost reel. Low-value symbols need at least 4 OAK to pay, while the premium symbols pay for 3 or 4 OAK combinations. The low pays are the classic BTG shiny royals from 9 to A, and the high pays are the green, blue, crimson, and purple Ghost symbols. Four-of-a-kind royals return 0.2-0.4 times the bet, while landing 4 matching Ghost symbols on a way pays 0.8 to 2 times the stake. The reaction system removes winning symbols and lets new ones drop into place. If that creates another win, the reaction feature activates again. Scatters do not take part in reactions.

Boo: Slot Features

Boo’s feature set isn’t especially frightening, consisting of reaction wins, wilds that can carry multipliers in the base game, free spins with sticky multipliers, and bonus buy options.

Wild

Multi-coloured ghost wilds land on reels 2, 3, and 4. They substitute for any standard paying symbol. In the base game, wilds can reveal a multiplier of up to x4. Any win they help form is multiplied by the multiplier shown on each substituting wild.

Free Spins

Landing 3 or more pumpkin scatters anywhere triggers 12 free spins. During free spins, every grid position has a multiplier sitting beneath the symbols, and it persists until the feature ends. These multipliers can increase while free spins are in progress. Whenever an initial spin (not a reaction) produces a win that includes Ghost symbols or wilds, one or more of the winning positions will have their multiplier boosted. The boost is a random +1, +2, or +3, and the size of the boost improves by +1 for each retrigger. When free spins begin, one or more positions that contained the triggering scatters receive multipliers starting at x2, x3, or x4. Every other position starts at x1.

Hitting 3 or more scatters during the feature grants an extra +3 free spins, as well as increasing the multiplier on one of those positions by +1, +2, or +3. Multipliers only affect Ghost symbols and wilds. All wins are multiplied by the multipliers shown on each Ghost and wild included in the winning combination.

Bonus Buy

Players can purchase 12 free spins for 90 times their stake or 24 spins for 500 times their stake.

Boo: Slot Verdict

In the evolution of Big Time Gaming’s 4×4 line, Boo feels more like a sideways move than a step forward. The core play is essentially unchanged—no better and no worse than Pop—but there’s a huge gulf between the base game and the bonus round. That’s not only because the features differ between the two phases, but because the win potential is worlds apart. Per the game sheet, the base game tops out at 705x the stake, while the maximum potential reaches 47,050x the stake. BTG often shows a gap between base and bonus potential, though usually not one this extreme.

That difference comes down to the sticky multipliers in free spins, which clearly have the capacity to “pop”—or boo, depending on how it goes. It also explains why Boo includes a bonus buy, letting players skip the base game and head straight for those sticky multipliers. Their progression is arguably supported by Ghost symbols paying for 3 as well as 4-of-a-kind. And with twenty-four spins, there’s plenty of opportunity to build hefty multipliers across the grid—at least in theory. In reality, nothing is assured, and 500x the bet is far from a bargain. One potential incentive is that the in-game help screen references a max payout of 200,000 times the bet when purchasing 24 free spins, which may be all the encouragement some players need to jump in.

Overall, Boo isn’t among Big Time Gaming’s strongest releases, and it’s certainly not its most inventive—especially on the innovation front. Fans of Pop may feel let down that it’s largely a repeat with a spooky reskin rather than a true follow-up with fresh mechanics. That said, if you enjoyed Pop, you’ll probably take to Boo’s ghostly, tightly tuned feel too—particularly if you’re the type who likes to swing big with bonus buys.
