Blood Lust Slot: Overview

The hugely successful Twilight book and film franchise has a lot to answer for. Along with toning down the traditional vampire myth, it somehow turned vampires into something trendy and alluring. Since then, plenty of followers have leaned into the strangely romantic angle of these night-dwellers. Or daytime ones—after all, Edward didn’t turn to dust in sunlight; he glittered instead. In slot games, vampires are often paired with romance, and that’s exactly the direction Swedish developer ELK Studios has taken with its vampire-themed title Blood Lust. It’s a formula that’s delivered before, but does Blood Lust pull it off as well?

Visually, Blood Lust shares some similarities with the earlier release Crusader. Not in theme, but in its bold, weighty art style and moody ambience. The underlying numbers are also quite comparable, including the 96% RTP, the 23.5% hit rate, and the volatility rating. The maximum potential matches Crusader too, which we’ll get to shortly. First up is choosing your stake, available from 20 p/c up to $/€100 per spin—either manual play or auto. With that sorted, you’re invited into Dracula’s shadowy, ancient realm, complete with a spired castle backdrop, twisted trees, and dim lighting. It’s easy on the eyes, as ELK games typically are. The soundtrack is suitably grand as well, adding an extra layer of theatrical flair.

The objective is to form winning combinations of three or more matching symbols from left to right. The reels are richly decorated, and the setup features 5 reels, 4 rows and 99 paylines to land them on. Symbol-wise, the lineup begins with 4 lower-paying jewelled card suits—clubs, hearts, diamonds, and spades. They shimmer as though charged with some ancient force, or something along those lines.

At the premium end, the golden vampire looks more like a cocky teenager than an age-old creature of the dark. Then again, Edward was 104 when he was still going to high school and pining after Bella. In any case, this symbol is Dracula himself and pays 40 times the stake for five of a kind. After him come two wide-eyed female characters and a green-tinged, laid-back vampire.

Supporting your wins is a golden wild that can replace any standard symbol. Wilds also pay the same as the top Dracula symbol. Rounding out the paytable are two additional special symbols that bring the features back from the grave.

Blood Lust Slot: Features

The first special symbol to note is the Boosted Respin symbol, which appears exclusively on reel 5. Landing just one of these candle-covered icons is enough to activate the feature. Once triggered, a symbol type is randomly selected and locked in place while the remaining positions respin. Any bonus symbols that appear are also held, improving the odds of triggering the bonus round or landing stronger wins with the chosen symbol.

After that comes the Boosted Stacks feature. Each reel contains stacks made up of the same symbol, and at the beginning of every spin, symbols are randomly selected to populate those stacks. This can be beneficial, though it’s worth remembering that different reels may end up with different symbols in their boosted stacks.

Lastly, landing 3 scatter symbols anywhere in view triggers the Free Spins bonus game. The positions of the scatters create a rectangular zone, and each tile within that zone awards 1 free spin. This means you can start with as few as 4 or as many as 15. During free spins, the three lowest premium symbols are displayed above the reels, each with its own meter.

Whenever these symbols land, they’re tracked and their meters increase. Once a meter is filled, it awards additional free spins and that symbol is upgraded into the Dracula symbol for the rest of the feature. The bonus round can turn out nicely, since scatters can retrigger free spins with no technical limit on how long the feature may continue.

Blood Lust Slot: Verdict

Here’s yet another vampire slot where the “villains” are attractive, and the women can’t resist their pale faces and icy stares. Within this particular niche, Blood Lust does have strengths, including high-quality artwork and sound design that work together to create a reasonably immersive setting for a spin. The features can be enjoyable as well, especially the free spins that can be retriggered. While they won’t last forever like Dracula’s undead existence, they do have a ceiling in the form of a win cap.

That said, the game falls short in two important ways. The first is the maximum potential, which ELK has once again limited to 2,500 times the stake—a figure they seem to default to unless they’re aiming to make a bigger splash. It likely won’t deter players who love this type of slot. Still, if this theme is your thing, it’s difficult to ignore proven favourites like Immortal Romance. The second drawback is that, while the symbol upgrades and respins are solid, there isn’t much here that feels genuinely fresh or particularly exciting.

All in all, Blood Lust comes across as a fairly average slot. It has some upsides, but they don’t run very deep. Put simply, Blood Lust probably won’t enjoy anything close to Dracula’s longevity.
