ELK Studios isn’t a poor developer by any means, but we still haven’t seen a release from them that truly goes toe-to-toe with the very top providers. With ELK, it often feels like you’re waiting for a breakthrough that never quite arrives, and like a few other studios they seem to have settled into a familiar formula for building slots. The surprise factor just isn’t really present.

Birthday is a 5-reel, 4-row slot with 178 fixed paylines. It plays smoothly across all devices with stakes from €0.10 to €50 and brings back guest characters known from other ELK titles, including the bull from Wild Toro (now apparently a sleazy-looking bartender), the attractive lady captain from Wild Seas, Electric Sam and the Blooper dudes.

The reel setup is classic ELK, so anyone familiar with their catalogue will feel comfortable immediately. Where the game really shines is the soundtrack, which leans into a funky, R&B vibe. It’s genuinely brilliant and almost guaranteed to lodge itself in your brain. A neat extra touch is the way random celebrity birthday announcements can appear.

The symbol set isn’t particularly traditional, and there are only 6 standard symbols, whereas most other 5-reel slots typically use at least 8. The 3 low value symbols are red heart-shaped balloons, green balloons and blue balloons.

The 3 premium symbols are made up of birthday logos, roses and drinks, with the Birthday symbol paying 15x across a 5-symbol line. Birthday also comes with 3 different wilds – 1 regular (Birthday cake) and 2 more that only show up in the Happy Spins feature and the Free Spins bonus game.

Happy Spins consist of five different respin types that trigger at random. Each Happy Spins round is kicked off by the doorbell, building anticipation about which guest arrives next and what specific feature they bring with them.

Spin until a given number of wins
The Camel awards a respin that keeps going until a set number of wins (3 to 5) has been reached.

Spin until 5 of a kind
Mr Lake’s respin present continues until a 5 of a kind win lands on a payline.

Electrified symbol
Electric Sam grants a respin that continues for as long as extra copies of a preselected symbol keep appearing. The chosen symbols become electrified and remain sticky for the duration of the respin.

Spin until a given win
The sneaky Matador picks a symbol and gives a respin that carries on until a win using the selected symbol is achieved.

Spin until a Big Win
Anne Bonny, the infamous pirate from Wild Seas, delivers a high-value respin gift that runs until a Big Win (15 x bet or higher) is hit.

Free Spins are activated in a slightly unusual manner. Any time Maggie, a cheerful little girl holding a balloon, appears to ring the doorbell, 10 free spins are awarded. She can also retrigger during the free spins, creating an extended chain of free spins and plenty of opportunities to win.

What separates the free spins bonus game from the base game are two extra wild types:

Sticky Wilds
The Soundtech can place up to three Sticky Wilds anywhere on the reels. These wilds remain sticky for the rest of the respins or free spins.

Walking Wilds

Birthday!: Verdict

Birthday is fairly high variance (7 out of 10 on ELK’s volatility scale) and offers a max win of 5,000x, which is solid and definitely makes it worth giving a few spins. The game runs at a 96.3% RTP, which is the modern standard and exactly what you’d expect.

It’s not a title that excels in any one standout area, and it’s certainly not a jaw-dropping ride. By now, ELK games tend to be fairly predictable in what they deliver, and this one follows that pattern. That doesn’t make it a bad slot, but it would have been nice to see something a bit more unconventional.

Still, the Happy Spins feature does a good job of keeping the base game engaging, which otherwise doesn’t have a whole lot going on. 5000x sounds great on paper, but it would take some outrageous hits that you’re unlikely to witness, so realistically you’re looking at 500-1000x on a very good day.
