Barbarian Gold: Overview
Brighton based developer Iron Dog Studio goes for a gritty fantasy theme in their slot Barbarian Gold—though “gritty” might be overstating it. Instead, Barbarian Gold leans into a cartoon-like style, a direction Iron Dog often prefers, as seen in other titles such as Viking Wilds. It’s a much lighter presentation, especially when set against Nolimit City’s harder-edged take in Barbarian Fury.
The gameplay unfolds on a 5-reel, 20-payline setup, with the reels mounted inside a rough wooden frame held together by beams and lashings. Outside the grid, the scenery is fairly minimal—grass in the foreground, a handful of trees, and distant castle turrets behind. It’s colourful and nicely put together, though not quite as polished as Nolimit City’s work, if we’re making comparisons.
With stakes ranging from 20 p/c up to $/€20 per spin and a 96.3% RTP, the mechanics are straightforward: land 3 or more matching symbols in a row from left to right. Barbarian Gold uses 20 fixed paylines to make that happen, filled with bright, bold icons. The symbols have a slightly app-like, smartphone feel—similar to what you might see in Relax Gaming slots, for instance.
From lowest to highest, the paytable begins with the four card suits – clubs, diamonds, hearts, and clubs. After that come more thematic symbols like a morning star, an axe, a sword, an ogre, a snake, and a barbarian. The top payout is the barbarian, paying 12.5 times the stake for five of a kind, while the other two character symbols pay 2.5x and 3.75x. The values aren’t huge on their own, but they’re supported by a progressive multiplier during free spins.
Barbarian Gold: Features

Expanding wilds are the core feature here, showing up in both the base game and the free spins round. In the base game, whenever the 1×1 wild lands, it expands to fill the entire reel. The wild substitutes for any other paying symbol, and multiple wild reels can land in the same spin.
The excitement ramps up thanks to the skull scatter, which can land anywhere. Hitting 3, 4, or 5 scatters in the base game awards 8, 10, or 12 free spins respectively. The action then shifts to the Lava Cave level, introducing a multiplier that applies to every win. The win multiplier begins at x1 and can only increase—it won’t reset during the feature. Each time a wild lands during free spins, it expands as usual and also boosts the win multiplier by +1.
Scatters can still appear during free spins, and landing 3, 4, or 5 awards 4, 5, or 6 additional spins. When this occurs, the game advances to the Gold Cave level. The advantage here is that when expanding wilds land in the Gold Cave, they raise the multiplier by +1 and also grant one extra free spin each.
Where available, the game may include a feature buy option, letting you activate free spins whenever you like. Paying 100x, 150x, 0r 200x awards 8, 10, or 12 free spins respectively.
Barbarian Gold: Verdict
To be honest, Barbarian Gold didn’t click immediately. Early on, it felt a bit like Disney had sanitised the Norse Sagas into a G-rated version, trimming away the rougher edges so it could be packaged as a family-friendly theme park attraction.
Before long, though, it became clear there was more going on than first impressions suggested. As is often true, the real promise shows up in the free spins. That’s where Iron Dog has built a feature with genuine upside. Still, like many volatile slots, some bonus rounds can be painfully underwhelming—even when using the bonus buy—so it’s worth keeping expectations in check.
Unsurprisingly, the Gold Cave is the main target, with frequent expanding wilds acting as the engine behind it. This not only drives the crucial multiplier—which can reach x30+ on a strong run—but also plays a key role in extending the feature with extra spins. When everything lines up, the game can deliver up to 10,000 times the stake (500x max in the base game).
Barbarian Gold may not hook everyone right away, and its lighter visual style could be a barrier for some players. But if you give it a little time and manage to reach the bonus round, there’s plenty there to see why Barbarian Gold can be worth the effort.
