Aztec Spins: Overview
The previous time we encountered developer R7 Studio was with their Art Deco/Victorian-flavoured clue-chasing slot Golden Cryptex, which took players on a rather unconventional hunt. This time, the Red Tiger partner studio goes in a completely different direction with Aztec Spins, a hot and humid South American themed slot. It’s arguably more traditional than their last outing, but it still brings a couple of twists that could keep players engaged.
When Aztec Spins first loaded, WMS’ classic Montezuma immediately came to mind. Sure, both games lean into an Aztec setting and both revolve around a prominent wheel, but the resemblance pretty much stops there.
Using a 6-reel, 4-row layout, Aztec Spins places a rotating prize wheel—styled like a mysterious circular Aztec Calendar—directly above the reels. Around the edges, dense jungle foliage and carved stone details round out the scene. It’s nicely put together and creates a strong atmosphere to spin in. The wheel’s rewards look tempting, and overall the presentation is undeniably appealing.
Before we dig into the Mesoamerican mysteries, it’s worth checking the game’s key stats. Bets range from 10 p/c to $/€20 per spin. The RTP is a touch lower than some recent titles, but at 95.71% it’s not especially alarming. Volatility sits in the medium to high bracket, delivering ups and downs, backed by respectable potential (covered later).
The first notable twist is that wins pay both ways on the 30-payline grid. You’ll need at least three matching symbols for a payout, and combinations can land left to right or right to left. This two-way system isn’t just a novelty either—it pairs neatly with the features, especially the Locking Symbols feature, as you’ll find out.
The paytable also leans into the Aztec theme through its symbols. The low-paying 10-A royals are less thematic, though they’ve been styled to resemble ancient stone carvings. The premium symbols are more distinctive: a flower-like icon, a man in a headdress, twin snakes, a mask, and a step pyramid. Six pyramids pay 12x, while six of the flower symbols return 4x. There are no wild symbols here, but the feature set is designed to function perfectly well without them.
Aztec Spins: Features

The wheel surrounding the reels is impossible to miss, so it’s the natural place to begin. This is the Aztec Wheel, and it triggers when the 2×2 Aztec Wheel symbol is fully shown on reels 3 and 4. Once activated, it awards a single spin of the Aztec Wheel, which can grant prizes such as Stacking Multipliers, Locked Symbols, Free Spins, or Wheel Respins.
The Stacking Multiplier grants a x10 multiplier that stays in place until it can be applied to the next symbol line win. You can land additional x10 multipliers before a winning spin arrives; when that happens, the multipliers combine, up to a maximum of x30. If the multiplier hits x30, the Stacking Multiplier segment is swapped out for a Wheel Respin segment. If the wheel lands on a Wheel Respin, it simply spins again.
When the Aztec Wheel lands on a pay symbol, that exact symbol fills both the 3rd and 4th reels, creating stacked reels. The remaining reels keep spinning, and any new matching symbols that land are also locked in place until a win is achieved. This mechanic is called the Locked Symbols feature.
If the wheel stops on Free Spins in the base game, 12 free spins are awarded. During this round, the Aztec Wheel triggers much more often. In addition, if the wheel lands on the Free Spins segment while the feature is running, then 6 extra free spins are added.
Finally, depending on the configuration, players may have the option to gamble their winnings. If it’s enabled, this is a straightforward blind card pick: guess the correct suit to win four times your payout, or choose the right colour to double it.
Aztec Spins: Verdict
Aztec Spins delivers gameplay that’s generally enjoyable, but it doesn’t fully match the game’s standout visuals. The feature list also reads well on paper, yet something about the overall execution stops it from reaching the level you might expect.
One mildly frustrating point shows up in free spins when the Aztec Wheel awards the Locked Symbols feature. With the two middle reels locked, every spin taken while the other reels try to build toward a win is still deducted from the free spins counter. So, if it takes 10 spins for a winning result to land, you’d only have 2 spins remaining to chase additional hits.
It also means the Aztec Wheel can’t trigger while the middle reels are occupied by Locked Symbols, which blocks any fresh bonuses from landing. That said, Locked Symbols can still produce a strong multi-line payout, and the maximum potential has been worked out at 4,983 times your stake, so meaningful wins are certainly on the table. It’s just a quirk worth remembering.
Overall, Aztec Spins has plenty going for it. Visually, it’s excellent, creating a thick, sweaty atmosphere that practically radiates heat and mosquitos. The Aztec Wheel can be genuinely exciting when it starts spinning, and the Locked Symbols feature is compelling when it manages to build up solid stacks.
Still, Aztec Spins doesn’t offer many real shocks and comes across as a fairly standard Red Tiger title—for better or worse. Even with the two-way pay mechanic, the restriction of 30 paylines feels a bit old-fashioned. Unsurprisingly, Aztec Spins won’t be joining Montezuma among the all-time greats; its staying power will be much shorter than that, though it may still entertain some players for a while.
