Astronaut: Slot Overview
Back in 2019, Lego reportedly commissioned The Harris Poll to ask 3,000 children across three countries, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up.’ In the UK and USA, it turned out roughly 3 times as many kids preferred the idea of being a YouTuber/Vlogger than becoming an astronaut. Typical, right? In China, though, over half said they’d like to leave the world behind one day and explore ‘Space: the final frontier’ as Captain Kirk put it. For adults who had similar ambitions but never made it into NASA, there’s still a way to feel a little closer to the dream. With enough imagination, titles like Astronaut from software developer Red Tiger can offer a small taste of what it might feel like to walk among the stars.
Ready to lean into that imagination? Astronaut is set aboard a spaceship or off-world docking station, with a planet, stars, and drifting gases visible through the window. For all the grandeur outside, the most striking thing inside the game is that there isn’t a standard reel set sitting in the middle. Instead, you get a floating rock with two strips of prize values running down either side, and that’s essentially the whole play area. Here’s the basic idea.

You begin by choosing a wager of 10 p/c to $/€2 per game round. Pressing spin then activates the game’s single reel. When it comes to a stop, it shows either a Green Crystal, a Red Crystal, or a Golden Shield. If you hit a Green Crystal, you move up the ladder and are asked whether you want to Continue, Collect, and sometimes Take Half.
- Continue – play another round with 100% of the potential winnings on the board.
- Take Half – cashes out 50% of the potential winnings and continues play with the leftover 50%.
- Collect – cash out all of the current winnings, ending the game round.
Above the reel, the game displays the probabilities of landing a Green Crystal or a Red Crystal, rounded to one decimal place. The more Greens you hit, the higher the chance of a Red Crystal appearing. With so much decision-making involved, pinning down volatility isn’t straightforward, although the paytable does include a Best Gamble Strategy for anyone who wants guidance. The RTP, however, is clearly stated at 96%.
Astronaut: Slot Features

Each time the reel finishes spinning, it will land on a Green Crystal, a Red Crystal, or a Golden Shield.
Green Crystal
Landing a Green Crystal moves you to the next prize on the ladder. After that, you can choose to collecting the prize, keep continuing spinning, or use the Take Half option to cash out half (which reduces the ladder prizes by half) before carrying on. The more Green Crystals you hit within a single round, the further players progress up the ladder, and the larger the prize values become.
Red Crystal
When a Red Crystal appears, the game round ends and players only receive whatever they managed to cash out during that round, if anything at all. The next round then starts again from the bottom of the ladder.
Golden Shield
The third outcome is the Golden Shield, which protects players from the next Red Crystal. When you land a Golden Shield, it triggers automatic spins until a Red Crystal lands. That next Red Crystal shatters the shield and shifts the game into Advanced mode, which increases the prizes for the upcoming steps on the prize ladder. At that point, players can choose to Collect the current value, Take Half, or Continue.

Astronaut: Slot Verdict
Getting into space isn’t exactly simple. It can look that way now, with thousands of satellites overhead and even reusable rockets in action, but the reality is you need serious technology to leave the world behind. In its own way, Astronaut mirrors that by taking a distinctive approach that nudges online slots in a different direction. With this design, Red Tiger has moved beyond its usual comfort zone to build something that doesn’t really resemble the rest of its portfolio. The studio has tried one line games before, but not quite like this, although Viral Spiral is in the same ballpark. One reel, one symbol per stop, and no traditional pay ways. It sounds—and even looks—a bit like something Games Global partner Crazy Tooth Studios could have produced. Of course, Astronaut won’t be everyone’s idea of a good time (or a freeze-dried tea in a vacuum-sealed pouch).
Even so, it shares some DNA with a bitcoin crash game, such as Pragmatic Play’s casino game Spaceman. A defining trait of games in this style is that you can’t simply press spin and instantly land the maximum win. Not at all—players need to steel themselves and keep hammering the Continue button to get there, or even to get anywhere near it. And once you’re close, how many people would really have the nerve to risk a huge win for an even bigger one… or for nothing? This format seems built for a particular type of gambler who can ride out the swings, sometimes putting a whole lot on the line for a shot at ‘ultimate glory’. In Astronaut, ultimate glory is 18,000x the bet, or, when the game is in Advanced mode, that figure rises to 48,000x the bet. Do you think you’d still press Continue if you were sitting on 9,920x with a chance at the top prize—or the chance to lose it all? That’s a serious decision.
Still, while fearless risk-takers may be drawn to the test, Astronaut’s lower rungs can be entertaining in their own right too. Nobody is saying you must push for the limit in every single game round. If you’re happy to cash out small amounts at the lower end of the ladder, that’s a perfectly valid way to play. But to wring the most excitement out of Astronaut, you’ll need a different mindset than you would for standard slots, and by the end of the cosmic day it feels aimed at a fairly specific niche. Some will be hooked; others may bounce off it in frustration—it’s undeniably different.
