Ashoka: Slot Overview

Time to brush up on a bit of history. Think back a couple of thousand years to the 3rd century BCE, when Ashoka, also known as Ashoka the Great, ruled a large part of Asia and is credited with helping Buddhism spread. So yes, online slots aren’t always just fruit and blazing sevens. That leads us to Ashoka, an online slot from developer ELK Studios, built around a scatter-paying format and packed with multiple mechanical ideas in one richly themed setting.

“Exotic” barely covers it in Ashoka. Between the many-armed statue, the pulsing chant-like soundtrack, and the hushed, mysterious tone, the game leans heavily into a mystical atmosphere. The dense, overgrown backdrop also brings to mind some of the Gold slots, such as Voodoo Gold, Ecuador Gold, or Pacific Gold. It feels like a forgotten place nature has reclaimed, where the presence of the wild is almost physical—like arriving at just the right moment might let you sense something beyond the visible world. Guarded by a skull and a statue, Ashoka’s playfield uses 6 columns with 8 positions in each. With every spin, not every spot is occupied by active symbols; some are filled by worthless blocker symbols instead. If 8 or more matching pay symbols appear anywhere on the grid, that creates a win and those symbols are removed. Any vertically adjacent blocker symbols are cleared too. Once symbols disappear, new ones Avalanche down to plug the gaps. Symbol-wise, Ashoka uses J-A ranks carved on stone blocks for the low pays, followed by a blue gem, green gem, orange gem, red gem, and a white tiger as the premium symbols. Alongside the range of wilds and the Avalanche system, Ashoka includes a multiplier symbol, super multiplier symbol, Bonus Game, and the X-iter.

Multiplier and Super Multiplier

Multiplier symbols contribute their values to the win multiplier whenever a winning scatter is present. When active, the win multiplier boosts all wins. Multiplier symbols are cleared out with the winning symbols during Avalanches. The super multiplier also adds its value to the win multiplier when a winning scatter is in view. The difference is that the super multiplier remains on the grid, triggering again on each Avalanche. It only disappears once no further wins land.

Bonus Game

Skull bonus symbols can drop in among the blockers. These inactive bonus symbols turn active when they sit vertically next to a winning symbol, and landing 3 active bonus symbols in the base game launches 10 free drops in the bonus game. Any super multiplier symbols transfer into the bonus game and stay in place between free drops. Extra free drops can also be gained, where hitting 2 or 3 active bonus symbols awards +5 or +10 free drops, respectively.

X-iter

The X-iter feature buy menu lets players purchase different game modes. These are:

• Bonus Hunt – 3x the bet to buy a game round with a greater chance of triggering a bonus.
• Charged Wilds – 10x the bet to buy a game round where all wild symbols are charged wild symbols.
• Super Multiplier – 25x the bet to buy a game round with a guaranteed super multiplier symbol.

Ashoka: Slot Verdict

Ashoka is definitely not a basic slot, yet it also didn’t create that familiar “feature overload” feeling that sometimes comes with reviewing an ELK Studios release. Usually, at this point, it can feel like a 10K run in typing form just to capture everything. Still, we’ve reached the verdict—so how does Ashoka stack up? Largely, it lands on the positive side. While ELK Studios is known for titles with mind-warping ways counts (the Nitropolis range with its millions and millions of ways—maybe even billions), scatter-paying systems are far less common from them. Ashoka could even be the studio’s first. True to form, ELK Studios hasn’t simply copied the success of other pay-anywhere slots like Sweet Bonanza or Pragmatic Play’s Gates games, instead putting a more distinctive spin on the idea. The end result felt like a blend of the earlier Kane slots, a touch of Dropz, a hint of Cluster Tumble, plus plenty of its own identity.

Much like Cluster Tumble, a key objective in the base game is breaking through blocker symbols to reach the bonus game. Turning on Bonus Hunt proved to be a very entertaining way to pursue that goal, as the drops became an enticing skull hunt. It is expensive, though, at 3 times the regular bet. Multiplier and super multiplier symbols didn’t show up in huge numbers, but wilds appeared often enough, so credit to the ELK Studios math team for making them work in a scatter-paying slot—something that isn’t always typical.

Unsurprisingly, the super bonus round was the more thrilling of the two. A persistent win multiplier paired with a persistent super multiplier can really crank up the intensity. Once again, it can feel costly when purchased via the X-iter. At maximum potential, Ashoka is capable of wins up to 25,000 times the bet. There will inevitably be elements some players won’t love; there’s no need to dwell on the sub-95% RTP, which is practically ELk Studios’ standard approach at this stage, and Ashoka can be a demanding ride. If the RTP had been nudged higher, it would have scored near the top by most measures. Even so, Ashoka is clearly another strong ELK Studios release that pushes the scatter-paying online slot style in an interesting direction.
